Oh, what am I talking about? My wife and I both got e-mails that we are both being considered for jobs in Aviano, Italy. She for a GS 11 position, and me for a GS 9 position. All that means is we have made it to the "your qualified for the job, but are we going to even interview you for the job?" stage.

So still really, REALLY unlikely at this point, but we can't help but be a little hopeful and excited. ESPECIALLY for both of us to get hired at the same time to the same facility.


Better odds for this happening for us than winning any big Lottery, but still very unlikely.

Still cool to think of the possibilities...

Good luck with the opportunities! I've been to Italy twice to visit relatives and have a cousin who grew up here, but studied and lived in Milan for a decade. I'm sure it has changed in the 15 years since I was last there, but what a great place to be if you love history! The area in Molise where my people came from has several castles dating back to the Lombards. Cool stuff. Anyway, best of luck to you!

If you get the slot, enjoy the Alps (you are truly at the foot hills of the Alps there), visit Venice, Rome, and then be ready to spend days in Florence (I preferred Florence to all other 'must see' cities!) and more importantly just go village hopping and see what you see. Out of country, Salzburg is AMAZING, and the best camping in the world that I've seen was Garmisch,

Oh yeah, go see an airborne jump at Juliet DZ, I've got over 15 jumps there, and the view is great, little villages around the DZ and then the alps in the background!

Yeah, its going to take a lot of luck. We've made it to this "stage" for many jobs over the last year, and never got any further.

An interesting one for turning down my wife has been, "Oh, you can't drive because your disabled? We can't hire you." Never mind these have been in major towns/cities, with cabs, etc... and the job description itself doesn't mention a need to drive anywhere other than the location to work...

I don't believe they can actually deny you for that reason, unless the job requires driving, as that is discriminatory. They should say "we're unable to trust you can arrive on time due to your lack of driving." Or what have you.

Yeah, plus every last one of them have been government jobs, and she is a "Schedule A" veteran, etc...

I think they get around it by, in their general questions, having "Can you drive?" So while it has NOTHING to do with the job itself, they always ask that question, and have turned my wife down over it every single time she got to the level of being considered for the job, IE she was qualified for it, because she cannot drive.
