Ghastly Affair is the Gothic Game of Romantic Horror, where players take the roles of the Bandits, Libertines, True Innocents, and other characters of classic Gothic fiction. Immerse yourself in the historical Ghastly Age of Marie-Antoinette and the Marquis de Sade, of Napoleon and Lord Byron. Experience a haunted and decadent world, where beauty and abomination are twisted together, and terror and love are close kin.

Ghastly Affair supports the full rage of classic Gothic stories, from romantic dramas of redemption, to shocking tales of dark indulgence. Your character might fight the monsters that haunt the night, or rob graves for profit. Defy convention to follow your heart, or master the Dark Arts of sorcery. Be a beacon of virtue amid perverse aristocrats, or gleefully embrace depravity. The choice is yours.

Ghastly Affair has been revised, reorganized, and reformatted for easier on-screen viewing and use. Its now been reissued as two books: the “Ghastly Affair Player's Manual”, and the “Ghastly Affair Presenter's Manual” (coming very soon). Typos, misspellings, and inaccuracies in the original release have been corrected for the revised edition. Its still the same game of full-blooded Gothic action for mature players, where you can be virtuous or villainous, and the denizens of High Society are crueler than the most vicious werewolf. Now its just prettier and easier to use!

Coming Very Soon: The Free PDF version of the “Ghastly Affair Presenter's Manual”. It includes extensive notes on running the game, a full list of Creatures and Adversaries, alternate and expanded rules, and a full chronology covering the Incidents and Scandals of the Ghastly Age!

Coming by June 2016: You'll be able to sink your claws into illustrated hardcopy editions of both the “Ghastly Affair Player's Manual” and the “Ghastly Affair Presenter's Manual”!

Nice PDF!
Can you get the Trolls to pay you to hyperlink their PDF's?
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Thanks guys! I intended this revision to be an electronic document primarily, and tried to make it as easy to read and navigate as possible. I also used the opportunity to correct some of the inevitable problems with the initial release. Splitting the book into two also allows me to include additional material into the "Presenter's Manual", without making the print edition unmanageably large.

Yeah, if everyone were to thoroughly hyperlink their PDF's like you have yours, I might be able to go fully electronic.

Of course, sometimes its fun to play "against type"! And a True Innocent can definitely be a powerful character - think Joan of Arc (she would have an 18-20 Charisma and the Asset "Courageous", so she basically never Faints.) In our home game, the waifish True Innocent has twice defeated a Demoniac with her Faith, and actually saved the Demon Hunter's life. Plus the game's all about doing things that you can't, or must not, do in real life!

And thanks for the compliment!

Oh I can agree up to a point, ... especially in the way you present the game and setting. However, I could never pull off something as divergent from my self as a libertine. Gypsy or mad scientist, maybe , ... I'd have to conceder them in the spirit of expanding my horizons.

Hmmmm True innocent and the asset of courageous. That I like, because I hated the idea of the BBG going boo and the true innocent falling over all aghast ... but that reminds me of a Beyond the Supernatural game I ran years ago. One character was a skeptic so didn't believe in the supernatural, so his power disrupted others' supernatural powers. It was a blast to GM that. He would mess everyone else up but mess up the monsters too, but then I'd have to give him a game 'out ' to explain why his character disbelieved what he saw and experienced. That kept me on my toes and imaginative in my descriptive and be ready for an excuse ... A monster kicking a brick of a wall as he climbs and it hitting the player in the head, the player finding some drugs at the scene so the monster is drugged up which is why it could do super human things etc etc etc ... boy that has nothing to do with your game, I guess I'm a bit off after a good Sunday afternoon nap

Actually, the idea of the "explained supernatural" has a long tradition in the Gothic genre, particularly in the writings of Ann Radcliffe. Ghastly Affair assumes that the "Preternatural" isn't "real" in the same way that ordinary reality is real. Everything about the Preternatural is shadowy and uncertain. That's why all Saves against spells and Mad Science are made with Wisdom (no matter what the effect appears to do), and Preternaturally created acid, lightning, and fire never cause scarring and permanent Ability damage, like real fire and lightning can.

Had a chance to finally look through the book today and was very impressed. Great writing, great presentation to details without overwhelming and excellent use of examples and ways to run the game.

[I've read much of the literary inspiration, but have not seen any of the movies. Time to catch up and then get motivated to run a game]

Thanks for sharing.
