Mine was the basic d&d boxed set: Vingard, a lawful good cleric.

It was probably an BD&D elf. I played a lot of those before I switched to AD&D.

Fairblade, a Lawful Fighter, from the Red Box. Followed soon after by Shasack the Magic-User and Ralif Redhammer the dwarf. I still have Shasack's character sheet. Man, elementary school me had awful handwriting. Not that 38 year old me's handwriting is all that great, either.

Summer of 1987, Mentzer Red Box character, female fighter, named Efspecies. God I was terrible at names back then.

Treebore, Fighter Mage, March of 1985, 1E AD&D. Using the Arduin books, which made Treebore son of the Cat Lord in the Greyhawk setting.

The Ruby Lord part, which you see on my SKYPE ID, comes from an organization he co founded, and all the senior members wore magical ruby rings. The characters were drawn from 5 other people I gamed with at the time.

That's totally cool. I've been kicking around the idea of changing my forum name to Draupnir.

Re: What was your FIRST roleplaying character, in any game?
Mine was a mage ... I can't remember his name, he didn't last long enough for me to remember it ... In the first game I cast my few spells ... magic missiles and burning hands if I remember correctly. Then I said all I have left was shocking grasp .... so my 'friends' picked me up and threw me into the hoard of orcs so I could slow them down while I shocked them and then they killed me and tore me limb from limb ...
That taught me my life long dislike of MUers , to be more careful of my friends (in game and in real life) and to play a character that can hold their own.
My next character was a by the book 1e Paladin Sir .... I'm tooo tired to remember his name.
I made a back up character of a Halfling fighter thief. .... can't remember his first name, Proudfeet was his last name (Yes I had just read Fellowship of the Ring)
Those 2 types of characters (to greater or lesser degrees) have been my stock characters ever since. Paladin is my fav class by far, followed closely by a fighter/thief (or ranger depending on the setting and background). Even characters that don't fit that mold are echoes of them in some way. Even my current 'swashbuckler' has parts of the paladin (and after last night's tasting a drip of magic water that put him asleep a LOT of master Proudfeet) in his mind set ...

Re: What was your FIRST roleplaying character, in any game?
BD&D . . Dec. 1978 - dwarf fighting man, I think his name was Herc. I rolled him up hoping someone else in our newly form group would volunteer to be the DM, but alas no one did. So I was the DM and Herc went unused. I have my dungeon key notes from B1 but do not have that char sheet, dagnabit.
So, perhaps technically (if there is such a thing in a non technical game) ~ my first RPG char would have been Rhuvein, hobbit burglar in Nov. 2004 when we started with the C&C white box.

BD&D, sometime in 1978. LN Cleric with 18 Wisdom.
Named ODO and was the "Priest of Eru".
Our DM gave me the priest moniker and it just stuck.
He lasted a few months and then crashed and burned in his killer dungeon.

Well . . to be precisely accurate my forum name comes from AOL in 1993 when first connecting to the internets. [This is when I first encountered Doom!]slimykuotoan wrote:So THAT'S where your forum name comes from! I tried to get reuven my Hebrew name at birth, but it was taken. So back then if you wanted reuven and it was assigned, then you would be reuven9 or reuven652 or some such.
So, I then decided to change the spelling which in my mind was more interesting and . . was closer to the Hebrew pronunciation than that of reuven.
Reuven = reuben or rubin
Rhuvein, rolling the "r" and saying "vain" is closest to the correct pronunciation.
Hope that wasn't too verbose.
But for me, it does recall the early days of the internet. I think the very first site I visited was crayola.com

Re: What was your FIRST roleplaying character, in any game?
I think I was Silverglade von Blackwolf the Elf, in Basic D&D. Which is pretty lame considering "Silverglade" is one of the two suggested names on p. 52 of Mentzer Player's Guide. I think I thought I thought of it myself, but later saw where I got it from. The von Blackwolf part wasn't even my idea. My friend had a character named something or other von Blackwolf and he wanted us to be brothers.

It must have been something from Warcraft 3, Vol'jin or that big Tauren chieftan, maybe even Thrall or Arthas!? Can't remember details from this distance =)

"Troogo" an AD&D Magic-User. Played him daily at Middle-school for 3 years, and on weekends. Got him up to level 20+, but it was a pre-teen/early teen Monty Haul game.

Such early games still have my favorite memories. I mean, how many boring adult game masters would let your character take god tests, etc...?

Re: What was your FIRST roleplaying character, in any game?
My first RPG gaming took place in a cargo van as my scout troop traveled from Ohio to Quetico National Park in Canada for a canoe trip in around 1977 or 1978. A friend had the original D&D box. We all took turns DM'ing and playing. I only remember having a blast... probably played a fighter first. We didn't do alignment, and we didn't do much story... just plunder dungeons and small towns, rinse and repeat. I was mesmerized. It was the beginning of a lifetime love of roleplaying.
Re: What was your FIRST roleplaying character, in any game?
My first character was a wizard called Desrimal in a swedish RPG called "Drager og Dæmoner" (Dragons and Demons).

Re: What was your FIRST roleplaying character, in any game?
A lawful fighter in Moldvay Basic D&D, created at school when I was 8. His name was Thor. I mostly DM'd after that, except for when we could play at recess, so my PC lived a long time. He was given a surname, "Guth," when I took him to my grandparents' house for a game with uncles and cousins. The DM (my cousin, IIRC) said Thor was a god in this world, so my PC needed a last name to make sure people knew he was not the god's avatar. So, my grandfather's workbooks were nearby and one of the binders had the name, "Guth" on it. I want to say he died in White Plume Mountain, but I could be wrong. Again, I mostly DM'd, so I have more DM memories than player memories.
I'm more proud of my brother, a mere 7 when we started playing, who named his chaotic thief character, "Erkio." Erkio lasted through our move to the next town over where kids were playing AD&D, so Erkio became a CN human thief in Greyhawk. Erkio made 40th level in our circle of friends' games. He retired into NPC-hood and now lives at his thief hideout in the plains east of Greyhawk City.
I'm also more proud of my oldest son, who came up with the name, "Womport," for his LG human fighter at age 4. I still stink at naming people, places, and things. So, I own 547(?) books on names.

Re: What was your FIRST roleplaying character, in any game?
I didn't really have characters when I started because all I had was the 1st edition DMG. I just sort of made up stuff based on what information was in there.... so, if you're looking for a "real character" then it could be Chester the Venus Flytrap in a Gamma World game. Or it could be Yo-Han the Bear-Knuckled monk.
