Anyone taken on a god or major devil?
When I was younger, I dmed a party that met up with Gilgamesh from the Deities & Demigods.
The party was evil and proceeded to beat the living @£#% out of said demigod, after the party's wizard starting throwing random fireballs into throngs of local villagers.
Man that was fun.
P.S. my character once got a hold of the Wand of Orcus. When Ocus showed up though, things were not so fun.

The last major campaign ended with a confrontation against Unklar.

The conclusion to Queen of the Demonweb Pits was pretty intense. Its a good thing they had saved those Wish Rings they had gotten in the earlier modules. Shapechanging into an Ancient Gold Dragon didn't hurt either.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I DM'd part of a campaign where the party took on Iuz. I misplayed him badly and the party ended up killing him in his own stronghold. Not one of my better moments. I'll pass it off as a youthful mistake...

Orcus. Eight 24th level characters, of which five survived. 24th level clerics and wizards in C&C are pretty amazing. They kill Orcus' good.

We killed Orcus back in 1e. But we were also about 10 years old at the time, so I'm sure it was completely by the books...

In the 17th/18th level C&C campaign I ran for my kids, they took on Pit Fiends and Morgryl, and their goal was to prevent the return of Unklar, and were even trying to bring back the All Father. We have yet to resolve that campaign, though, because we decided to wait on Steve and Davis to get Aufstrag published. At that point, I was just going on what Davis described to me at a Troll Con about Aufstrag. Hopefully, once Aufstrag is finally published, we will get back the motivation to wrap up that campaign once and for all.

Re: Anyone taken on a god or major devil?
Way, way back... using the first AD&D rules, I ran a day-long game that ended with the party taking on Demogorgon. It was about a 14 hour game, and we had a blast. All players died in the end... not because I wanted a TPK... I wanted them to win. But there was no way I could fudge the rolls enough for the party to beat him. I forget what level they were at (this was around 1980 or so), but I know they were nowhere near ready for that fight.
That showed my inexperience as a DM at the time... because I believed that by the end of the day, with the adventure I had created, the party would have the levels and the items needed to have a chance. I remember that we all had a lot of laughs and fun as, one by one, they all were utterly destroyed.

Re: Anyone taken on a god or major devil?
It may be surprising, as I tend to play paladins, but for me no, not really. However, it is more of me playing lower to mid level characters - 12 - 14 MAX. So those are well out side my power level.
However, I have gone up against that 'Snow Devil' from the dragon mag that I mentioned in the other threads. Plus, have taken on lots of lower to mid level devils demons etc. Hay wait, I just looked him up in MM 2, Kostchtchie. SO I guess yeah, but I'm sure he was a toned down version of the demon lord ....
That said, I hate to admit that in one campaign, my Paladin ended up helping a unique 'temptress' devil. She wasn't major per say , but she was more than just an average erinye. She was imbedded in the court - a lady in waiting and then married into a powerful family - and my Paladin knew something was wrong/corrupt in the court. However, I could never quite figure it out. At the same time, she kept feeding me info on rival demons and devils in the area - some working against her directly, some indirectly and others just as red herrings to keep me busy and happy killing evil in the area.
The salt in the wound was when she revealed it to me, as she was leaving court to go as an ambassador to another kingdom with her husband and my liege's son, but I couldn't do anything. I had no proof she did anything other than the fact that she was a devil . If I called her out on it , it would mean I would ruin her family (and they were doing nothing wrong) I would shame my liege (showing that a devil had been active in his court and no one knew or did anything for years) and I would be condemning her just for her 'race'. Not provable actions. I still grit my teeth even now at the thought of that end of the campaign !!!!!

Re: Anyone taken on a god or major devil?
I can't recall if it was still 1E or if we had converted our 1E characters to 2E. Anyways, we went through the craziness of the Bloodstone modules, including H4 (the "Up to Level 100!" module). I actually found the city of liches to be far more dangerous than Orcus was. I think we also found that weird Red Dragon (I want to say it was hollow, but that may have been The Ruins of Castle Greyhawk.) to be more of a challenge than Orcus. Probably because we went into the Abyss geared to take on all the Demons, everything else, not so much.
