I don't have any plans. Wonder if Rhuvein is busy. What would we play?
Re: Rhu's Sun nite game - In Search of the Unknown B1
I dunno, really. I PMed Rhu, so, we'll see what he might have in mind. It is a Holiday weekend, so I dunno what his work schedule might be like.

Hi guys. I spent the day cooking and sort of forgot about a possible session tonight. Probably holiday/retail ~ loose track of what day it is and such.
Anyway, I'm not up to run a game ~ but if either of you wanted to run something, I'd join in.

We could always pre-game for the Traveller sesh. I need to try to get the character sheets available. Stuff like that.

Re: Rhu's Sun nite game - In Search of the Unknown B1
Getting ready to run this module for my nephews tonight using Labyrinth Lord. It will be their first PnP roleplaying experience.
A thought (one which I won't be bringing up in tonight's game) has just occurred to me - could Rogahn and Zelligar have been gay? I dunno why, but reading the introduction to the adventure, particularly the line,
"No one knows what occurrence or coincidence brought these two men together, but tales tell of their meeting and forming a strong bond of friendship, a union that would last for the ages."
..reminded me of Jack and Ennis from "Brokeback Mountain." Not that there's anything wrong with that.
(I'm more or less entirely joking, by the way, although I think it would add an interesting dimension to the story. If I ever run this again - for any adults, I'm going to insert subtle clues about such a relationship throughout the module)

I guess I would wonder how you would use that to make the adventure more interesting for the players rather than just for flavour?Gringnr wrote:Getting ready to run this module for my nephews tonight using Labyrinth Lord. It will be their first PnP roleplaying experience.

I suppose it could maybe be used as a way to extend the mystery -- or as a hook into the dungeon or a way to propel the party out again since the module doesn't seem to have a strong closure.
Maybe the couple built the fortress because they sought refuge from a secret society whose sole purpose was to persecute and kill anyone who was gay. A brush with rabid intolerance could be introduced at the inn or somewhere along the way to the dungeon. The mage's diary could detail their fear and suggest that the partners haven't actually been missing for long. Did the society kill them or maybe kidnap them? Society members might be squatting in the dungeon or preparing it to be their new HQ. Thinking the party might be friends or sympathizers of the couple they stalk the party (rings of improved invisibility) causing all manner of mischief on top of the normal traps and hazards. The party might never actually see their stalkers until the end. If you want to be really mean toss in another faction that is looking for the couple and might think the party are members of the intolerant society. Can the party recognize friend from foe in time? A super mean trick if your party is lawful good and in danger of losing their alignment through an error in judgement.
But I wouldn't do this with just any group because it seems like homophobia is on the rise again and the side discussions could turn ugly. If used as a casual running joke someone in your group might be in the closet after all and it could turn into a really hurtful experience for him.
Re: Rhu's Sun nite game - In Search of the Unknown B1
Oh, I agree with you. I just thought it would be interesting to drop subtle hints to see if the players picked up on them.
Back in the early 90s I think, Marvel Comics hero called Northstar came out of the closet, so to speak. Looking back thru past issues, it became quite apparent that the authors handling Northstar had been intending this for quite some time. Many subtle clues became much more obvious to me, and in hindsight I wonder how I missed them, other than the fact that I was like 12.
Anyway, I was just goofing. Also, I wouldn't make fun of someone's sexuality (unless they were a furry). So, even if I were to present this in a game, it wouldn't be disrespectful.
I guess when I was reading about Rogahn and Zelligar, and their remote tower and generally secretive nature, it just reminded me of how, in Brokeback Mountain, the character Jack Twist wanted to buy a ranch with Ennis so they could be together away from the prying eyes and hateful hearts of society.
"I can't quit you, Zelligar."

Welp I don't have enough nephews, so I hadda round out the party with NPCs from the module. My selection criteria: the funniest names. My favorite: Kracky the Hooded One, human cleric.

Oh my!
I haven't seen Brokeback Mountain, but need to watch it - since my college schoolmate directed it!
Hmm, and now I might have to re-read the module with a new perspective!!

It went well. Kids are funny, their characters were named Mace (dwarf armed not with a mace but with a scimitar), Wraith (elf), Killer (also an elf) and Destroyer (ironically, a cleric). So far, along with the NPCs, they have defeated 4 orcs and 3 giant rats, with but a scratch or two to show for their troubles. They are missing out on some treasure, though, due to a heavy reliance on infravision. Gold pieces don't have a heat signature, who knew?
