Party Treasure

Post by slimykuotoan »

How do you guys keep track of party treasure?

Do you hand wave it, recording the lot and pretending that it's stored in some void somewhere until it can be divided in town?

Do you designate a character to carry all of the loot?

Do you divide it between characters as you go?

Etcetera, etcetera.

Our would divide the treasure amongst the group for travel after it was aquired. As soon as the group could get to a place safe enough, we'd roll to see who got first pick. Usually this was done at town.

Party treasure, as in its intended for the entire group, would end up on one or more wagons or other modes of transport. Specific individuals might carry some, but the understanding is that the PC has their personal amount and the rest belongs to everyone. Thieves may not adhere to that, at their peril.

Like RunninLaser, our group splits up loot then and there. I'm a stickler for EV, and the amount of stuff carried. Oh you have 4 sets of armor, and a loadout of weapons, I don't think so. Time to ditch something.

My players usually wait until they get back to town to split up loot. They divide magic items for best party use and divide everything else evenly. If there is left over gp, they dump it into the "Party Share." They use that to buy things like raise dead, resurrections, and cure potions or healing wands. It works out fairly well for us.

In games where I'm a player, we typically do the same thing. Magic items go to where they will be most effective for the party and gp is divided evenly with left over coins going to the communal pot.

Treasure, are we supposed to give that out? No wonder my groups is broke and has no magic items... my treasure is so stingy they fight over each piece like starving beggars over bread crumbs... not really, but I either give out so much they can only take what they can carry or so little its not that much.. normally "items" get stashed rather quickly. As the CK I have no rules but so far the group seems to divide immediately, if for no other reason to spread the load.. I too tend to be picky on carrying too much. But my method is more a quick review and tell them too much, drop something.
Wow, Another Natural One! You guys are a sink hole for luck. Stay away from my dice.

Sounds like we are in the same groups. Oh, wait, for the most part, we are!
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I make my players record treasure on their sheet when they get it.
Someone has to carry it, and when they carry it, it has to be recorded, or it doesn't exist. You can't carry unreasonably amounts of treasure, so people have to buy mules and camels and wagons. If they park the wagons outside a dungeon, ettins come and eat the camels and take the gold.
I also charge a fee to convert gold to gems.
I am a big jerk.

As far as who gets what, it's up to the players to split it up fairly, which they always do. If they aren't sure they do a need/greed/pass roll.

If anyone NEEDs it (it's a good fit for their character in particular) and rolls highest, they get it.
If no one needs it (they think it'd be nice to have, but don't mind if someone else gets it), the highest GREED roll gets it.
Anyone who passes, passes.

Not at all. I like this method as well; it brings a nice realism to the game I think.
