Windows 10 question
Windows 10 question
For those of you that have done the free upgrade of Win 10 from Win 7 or 8. Did you lose any of your files/programs doing the upgrade. Most things I've read says that you can upgrade without losing things or fresh in stall and it will be just like doing a fresh reinstall of Windows.
Also, how do you like Win 10 as compared to Win 7 (I never touched Win 8, so I don't know anything about it).

Re: Windows 10 question
I just got 10 last week with my new laptop and am still getting used to it (I have 7 on my work computer). 10 has a "Siri-like" function called Cortana that helps search for things on the computer or on the internet. I find that bothersome, so I turned it off and search the old way using the search box. Other than that, its just a matter of learning where everything is now.
When I upgraded from Vista to 8 on my old laptop (hated 8!) I didn't lose anything, but had all my stuff backed up on an external drive in any case. That is a must.

Re: Windows 10 question
Did the upgrade on my laptop, but it didn't go without incident. At the time I did the upgrade there was no Bluetooth driver for my laptop. That came later, but as I don't use Bluetooth much it was not a major issue. The only program I ended up losing was Avast, and that's because the version I had on the laptop wasn't compatible with Windows 10. Fortunately Avast had a Windows 10 version ready to go and I was back in business.
In general I like it. I had a device in house that came with Windows 8.1, and to me it was useless without Start 8. Windows 10 returned the start menu, and I was sold. Of course, it wasn't difficult to be sold on a free upgrade, but still.

I fixed this problem a long time ago. I bought an apple computer. Oh burn! Jokes aside, good luck and I wish you the best of luck in your upgrade.

Yes you were. Sorry. Over paying for a computer is a mistake that many make.jdizzy001 wrote: Oh burn!
Better luck next time!

Re: Windows 10 question
I quite like Windows 10, but mine was a fresh copy with some of my files and programs manually transferred from the old machine to the new.
Some of the older programs I use for my music are a little wonky on Windows 10, but other than that, no complaints.
As compared to Windows 7, the only real issue I've had is figuring out where to find things, but that's a small enough quibble.

Re: Windows 10 question
I plan on making the switch at some point, but the Mrs wants me to wait until she makes sure everything has been transferred to her new computer or save to her external drive. At that point, I'll probably do a fresh install, since I don't have anything on the laptop that I can't replace easily. But, since it's play season, I'll have to wait until sometime after April to have her go over it.

Re: Windows 10 question
I find that I'm almost liking Edge, now, with the latest Insider Preview enabling support for browser extensions. The translation one is pretty quick...faster than Google, in my opinion (didn't actually run telemetry tests). Hopefully some kind of ad block will be available soon.
I don't plan on using it for everyday navigation. So, looks like a multi-browser PC is still in my future.

Re: Windows 10 question
I don't mind it. I was nervous about upgrading mainly because I've had no problems running Win 7 64 . But it was free and I know eventually Support for Win 7 will cease from Microsoft and things like Steam ( though not for a long while yet ).. I went with the upgrade, and didn't have much trouble with it. I did have to upgrade some of my system's drivers. I've had no problems running any of my programs or accessing files on my backup drive....Pleasantly surprised.
Enjpy playing and CKing C & C as much as I'm able. Most days after 9 pm EST and any time on Wednesdays. Enjoy playing on VTT's such as Fantasy Grounds and anything else.

Heh. Following up on this . . I'm a huge Apple fan but not of their prices. Been using Apple Mac since '84 at work or troubleshooting friends and family Apple computers. My sister is a teacher so many of them go with Apple (I think they get discounts).jdizzy001 wrote:Lol, tuche!
Anyway . . . not a fan of microsoft and their crap, but as a former IT Mgr I've always had them at home and at work.
I run win 7 and it's just been fabulous (if there is such a thing with regard to winblow) compared to most of their previous OSs.
For now, I have no intention of upgrading.
[IMO, win 8 was the worst piece of shit I have ever seen in my 34 years of owning home computers! Yes it was worse than ME or Vista!!]

Re: Windows 10 question
Well, I took the plunge and upgraded last night. I really didn't a chance to play around with it too much, since I found another 120 gb of files of my wife's that needed to be moved to the external HD. She has it on her new laptop and seems to like it (although, she hasn't really played around with it much).

Re: Windows 10 question
I'm getting used to it; just a bit of an adjustment from 7, since that is what I use all day long on the work computer. I will say it's an improvement on 8 though.
Re: Windows 10 question
My job requires an intimacy with all MS products and services. So, I switched to Windows 10 before it was available. Except at home. I still use Windows 7, mostly because my video card is not supported on anything higher. Or, is, with a hacked driver set.
Re: Windows 10 question
I've been using Win 10 now for a few days and it's pretty much Win 7 in general use. I haven't really mucked about on it too much though. So, other than not being Linux, it is pretty standard for Windows.
