What do you think they are?

Re: The most successful/popular rpg of all time
I think officially its clearly D&D. So do you mean what we personally think it should have been?
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Re: The top five most successful/ popular rpgs of all time
Well, how do you define success? Is it number of units sold? Is it percent of money earned based on investment? How successful a RPG product is will go by many different views of success. Popularity is something completely different and not tied to success. For example, D&D is most certainly the most popular D&D brand of all time, but I would wager it is not the most "successful."

Meh. However you see it is fine. Perhaps popularity with players?

Re: The top five most successful/ popular rpgs of all time
1. Dungeons and Dragons (multiple editions)
2. Traveller (multiple editions)
3. Call of Cthulhu (multiple editions)
4. Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG
5. Savage Worlds
Based on longevity, success, and fan enthusiasm. But I'm no expert.

Re: The top five most successful/ popular rpgs of all time
My votes would be for:
D&D - for obvious reasons
Vampire: The Masquerade - the impact of this game on the hobby when it came out was vast, in a lot of ways redefining what I considered role-playing to be
Pathfinder - the only RPG to beat D&D at its own game; granted, it was during the 4e era, which was a lot of D&D kneecapping itself before the race even got started
Shadowrun - a chocolate and peanut butter moment of fantasy and cyberpunk
Call of Cthulhu - probably the gold standard for horror RPGs
