This is exactly what I have been looking for. I would love to be able to hand these out to my son and his friends, who still find the full-size PHB a little overwhelming. I have actually been considering re-writing an RC style C&C book (for my own use only!), by stripping down and combining the PHB and M&T and adding a section containing an introductory scenario and campaign world. I've already outlined it, but it would be great to avoid the actual work.

There is not too much to tell regarding this project yet. Although, just today gideon_throne did drop hints that race as class would be present in this box set.

His words are mentioned here:
http://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewt ... d1933f149e

This is some good stuff from TLG. I hope they take this box set very seriously and give it the deserved attention that an intro game warrents.

Thanks for the link! I kind of like the race-as-class concept these days. It keeps the demihumans archetypal and helps explain the humanocentric world.

Agreed. I think this is especially important for the basic version of the C&C game. It does indeed strengthen the fantasy archtype, and (hopefully) provides a viable option for the "advenced" version of the C&C game.

Can't wait for this box set.

On a side note, Steve or Davis has said on these very boards late last month, or early this month that the C&C Basic Set is still planned to be released in April. Good news!!!

Certainly hope so. I know my variation on them wasn't that popular, so maybe someone has a better intrepretation. Always something else to steal.. err, inspire.

Actually, I thought yours were really cool. I'm just the type who wants to play races and classes as close to the rules as possible so those who play in my C&C game and then play in someone else's, it feels similiar. I have some houserules, don't get me wrong, but I try and keep them streamlined along with the system instead of changing it too much. Having races as classes in official C&C rules just makes them easier to use for my purposes. But if I was ever playing in your game Serl, I'd definitely have a hard choice because I would not be playing a human.

I think this is a very important point. The concept and physical packaging sound excellent, but I hope a lot of effort went into streamlining the typically thick Troll Prose and giving this product its own identity. A tight thematic focus, completeness, and quality control is even more important in an introductory product than otherwise.

If one could blend the easy style of Moldvay Basic with the completeness of Mentzer RC, and season with C&C systems, this product could have even more of a long-term impact than the PHB.

Cheers,

Christopher

I couldn't agree with you more! That is a great statement. When I run C&C at conventions, I may even start giving away C&C basic sets over the core PHB. Because the Basic Set sounds like an all inclusive game. According to the On The Anvil page, it comes with a players book and a CK screen. That is so awesome!

As long as it doesn't become a case of "C&C" and "Advanced C&C"...

The box does sound cool though!

Wouldn't by default the regular C&C game be more "advanced?"

*snorts* The release of the CKG certainly is going to make for a more 'advanced' game.

But I wouldnt expect to see an AC&C book or anything like that being released.

The basic boxed set is principally designed along the same philosophy as the white box that was initially released for the C&C game. More or less a 'complete' ready to go system.

I dont know about format, but I did suggest a book for the CK, and a photocopyable folded and stapled handout for players. We'll see how that goes?

Hmm, OK we got OC&C, basic - BC&C and now we're talking about AC&C! Would that be AC&C 1E?

Did they say what year?

I really hope this comes off on schedule as I would like to buy one. My favorate form of the "Old Game" was five box D&D.

If you're like me and you missed the updated C&C Basic page...

The product description sure paints a pretty picture of this product (as well as the cover artist!). Can't wait.

This is on schedule for a LATE May, probably early June, release of this year. To clear up any confusion, this will come in an 8.5 x 11 box set.

I'll get more specific on the format when Davis and I tackle this one. We are looking at five release in and around that time, including the box set, and are on schedule with all of them right now (Crusader 7, LA More Beasts of Legend, C&C Dzeebagd and The Canting Crew Revisited).

Hmm ... this somehow sounds a bit hurried. Does this mean that most of the work is already done, or that this is a remix of material already in print ... or both, or neither?
Regardless, good luck with the project!

Consider it an expansion of the Spartan 300 white boxed set if you like? That was intended to be more of a introductory collectors product, which is why it's not seen widely in stores.

This new set is more fleshed out and includes more material, and will be seen in stores.

Fantastic. I'm thinking my nephew may well be ready to try CK'ing. I'm going to pick up a couple for sure!

Yeah, this is some good stuff. The box set is 8.5" x 11.0", but the recently released CK screen are the same size. As per the description, included in the Basic C&C Box set will be "CK Screens." Maybe they will be a bit different, and smaller? I know that's a stretch, but it got me to thinking.

As for the books, I wonder if they'll be digest-sized again, or like the D&D Basic box sets? Either would be cool to be honest, but a larger player book and a CK book much like those other, older D&D sets would be equally fantastic!

Man, this is good news and a lot of good stuff in one box set!

Count me in for multiple copies as well (play copy, shelf copy, plus a few giveaways).

When one does an 8.5 x 11 box, that accounts for interiors. The measurments are actually slightly larger to give room for the books inside, which are 8.5 x 11.

The outer box measurements are more like 8.75 by 11.25

Heh, just for laughs I pulled out a couple of my boxes for measurement. Not that I didn't believe you gideon, but more for scientific research!
D&D basic box = 9.25X11.25

D&D expert box = 9.25X11.30

Hall of Many Panes = 9X11.50

LA Essentials = ditto

Ravenloft = 9X11.75

Inside contents varied somewhat.
