Alternate Mummies
Alternate Mummies
As I mentioned in the other thread, I had hours and hours, miles and miles of driving and listening to lectures, and thinking about gaming on my vacation. One of the lectures was about pre-history human society . A couple of the comments in the lecture dealt with mummies – the stone age mummy found in the Alps snow cap, and the bog mummies to be specific, and of course Egyptian & South Americn mummies. That got me thinking about different types of mummies in a game world.
Of course the Egyptian mummy (and the South American mummies when you boil it down to why the mummies were created in those cultures too)is already covered in the game setting. But what about other types of mummies?
Here are ideas (completely rough and not finished or polished)
Desert mummies – mummies created ‘naturally’ in a desert environment and not by the religious ceremonies associated with Egyptian / South American society – the lecture mentioned that the first mummies seem to be accidental mummies due to the hot dry desert environment and from these accidents the Egyptians perfected the mummification process – As they were accidental, they should be a little weaker than the standard mummy in HD etc (not sure on how much weaker though) They would be missing the classic wrappings of the mummy but would have ragged and torn clothing. Now for their special attack, I’d say that as they are a result of the hot dry sandy windy desert environment their special attack should reflect this. Maybe something like ‘summon dust devil’ , ‘create dust storm’, scorching wind, or heat metal . However, like the classic mummy they could easily have a vulnerability to fire.
Ice mummies – based on the stone age mummy found in the alps – mummies created in a cold environment whether in a cold mountain cave or in the arctic tundra. They could be purposely created by being a sacrifice or by accident. Like the desert mummies, they will not be wrapped in special bandages but will be in the clothing they were wearing when they died. If they were sacrificed, these cloths could be ceremonial, but not the wrappings of a classic mummy. As for their special attack, as they are created in cold it should be cold based. There are plenty of cold based spells to choose from or modify to fit this mummy. As for the vulnerability … ??? Fire ??? however, I know from experience that wood that is cold to the point of frozen is hard to start to burn, so maybe not. If not fire though, then what ???
Bog mummies – based on the mummies found in European bogs created by the acidic/tannic elements in the bog/waters and muck and the tanning /leathering effect it has on the bodies. Again these can be created naturally – a hapless soul falling into the bog – but is as often as not created by religious sacrifice. The leather like process that creates the mummy should offer this type of mummy a higher AC than the desert version. Similarly, they process will remove the vulnerability to fire for this type of mummy. For the special attacks, it should be something like acid (weak acid) or a swamp based attack. Maybe a stinking cloud or similar effect.
Now for ‘posible locations’ that don’t have historic mummies
Volcanic mummies – these aren’t historic mummies, but time and time again, the lecture mentioned a volcanic even covering cities/areas in volcanic ash and preserving everything it covers. So, it isn’t a long leap to picture these events making a mummy. As such, these mummies are never created purposely . Also they are covered in supper heated ash that will harden (yet allow movement). With that, again the AC should be higher for these mummies than classic mummies. Also they not only would not ve vulnerable to fire they would be immune to it. The special attacks should be heat based like the desert mummy, but even more directly so. Where the desert mummy has ‘hot wind’ based attacks, the Volcanic mummies would have a ‘scorching grip’ or something like that.
Mud mummies – again not historic equivalent, but again the lecturer mentioned 3 or 4 times finding critical archaeological items buried in mud of rivers lakes and inland seas with the items being not only stone or pottery, but organic material. Wood boats, wood spear shafts, bone tools, even wicker baskets with seeds etc. So, if mud can preserve wood bone and grass, why not a body and then why not have it become a mummy … ??? Again, this would be one that more than likely was an accidental mummy. With them being mud formed … maybe a lower AC than the classic mummy, but have it take half damage from ‘blunt’ type weapons. For the vulnerability & special attack … I don’t know … I’ve taped out my creativeness … maybe a slam attack, or suffocation from covering the victims’’ mouth/face with mud …
What do you all think ? Do they have merit, how would you clean them up (ha just caught the pun with clean up and the mud mummy … wow I must be tired …) Are there other areas/types of mummies that are justifiable with this idea ?

Re: Alternate Mummies
Hey Lurker...cool concepts. I could be remembering this wrong, but I distinctly recall reading something about preserved bodies in the ruins of Pompeii having been found back in the 90's or so. Ash Mummies...waiting to be dug up by would be treasure hunters and/or raiders.
Another article in the last or previous decade mentioned the mud mummy type preservation. Victims of mudslides from earthquakes in Micronesia's part of the world. National Geographic for both. (too much time in doctor waiting rooms back then)
Neither are exactly mummies in the classical or historical sense but if you take it to a basic definition of preserved corpse animated by corrupted spirits it would fit. Both cases would have these bodies very dense and hard to damage due to mineralization and compression. Much like petrified wood...though they would be pretty dang slow for much the same reason.

So, I'll provide my same response... of course, it would need to be updated to C&C as this was originally going to be something I did for d20 with TLG. Fell through, because I suck.
All information is based on real world knowledge and discovery. This information spans the globe, and is not centered on any particular world belief.
First, one needs to know that Mummies are not solely Clerics or other Divine casters; instead, many types of individuals, and even animals, have been mummified, whether through ceremony, or happenstance. This means, in most cases, the following information provides only the basics, and, if made into mechanics, would likely invoke templating. Also, this list is not complete, from a fantasy perspective, but from real-world perspective, all Mummies can be rationalized.
Typically speaking, there are three categories of Mummies, subsumed by various subtypes within each grouping.
Funerary: These Mummies are creations of, and for, the deceased, usually for religious purposes; each subtype has its own reason for the process, but all involve the attempt to preserve the soul, thereby granting the mummified individual an existence in the afterlife. Typically, only high-ranking members of society are mummified this way, though, for the right service, or price, the process is offered. Includes Pyre, Canopic, and Bound.
Pyre: These Mummies are borne of flames, consumed by the fires of the last rites, created to burn eternal. Religiously, these Mummies are created to release the soul from the body, to provide the deceased with the freedom required to rebirth in the avatar of their God, and provide the survivors a reminder. Often, if the source of the Pyre Mummy can be found, and the flame extinguished, the Mummy is destroyed.
Powers of the Pyre Mummy: Outsider (Incorporeal, Fire), Undead Traits, Consume, and Burn. There are others, but these are the standard.
Weaknesses of the Pyre Mummy: Water/Cold Vulnerability and Range Limit. There are others, but all share these traits.
Canopic: These Mummies are the shell of its previous life, preserved to provide the soul a return vessel. The internal organs are removed, and stored in reliquary devices. Religiously, these Mummies are created to provide the deceased a body, to interact with, and survive the transformation to death. Often, if the jars and/or chests containing the Canopic Mummy's organs are found, and destroyed, the Mummy is vanquished.
Powers of the Canopic Mummy: Undead, Steal Organ, Dust, and Odor. There are others, but these are the standard.
Weaknesses of the Canopic Mummy: Hunger and Phobic. There are others, but all share these traits.
Bound: These Mummies are either guardinals, created to protect and serve, or they are villains of extreme evil. Provided with a semblance of their former self, these Mummies possess a soul. Religiously, these Mummies are either created as punishments for severe crimes, or are regarded as the highest order. Often, a Mummy of this type must be destroyed physically at the location of its mummificationa task that is nearly always difficult to perform.
Powers of the Bound Mummy: Undead, Merge, Scry Location and Curse. There are others, but these are the standard.
Weaknesses of the Bound Mummy: Quested. There are others, but all share these traits.
Accidental: These Mummies are the result of environmental mishap, or in some cases, persecution and murder. Typically, a Mummy created this way was buried, or encased in some element, and slowly altered physically to a state of mummification. These Mummies typically possess elemental-based abilities. Includes Gelid, Saline, Calx, Amber, Tar, Quag, and Adobe.
Gelid: These Mummies are encased in ice, and glacial reserves, protected by the frigidity of the environment from the natural process of entropy. Typically, these Mummies have been frozen for long periods of time, but due to the climate and type of mummification, resemble a living member of whatever race it was prior to transformation. Often, these Mummies must be destroyed physically.
Powers of the Gelid Mummy: Undead (Cold), Cold Mastery, and Freeze. There are others, but these are the standard.
Weakness of the Gelid Mummy: Fire Vulnerability and Slow. There are others, but all share these traits.
Saline: These Mummies are created by burial in salt, shriveled into a state of mummification by moisture loss and aridity. Typically, these Mummies are less fortunate members of society, unable to afford, or qualify for Funerary (Canopic) transformation. Often, these Mummies must be destroyed physically.
Powers of the Saline Mummy: Undead, Desiccate, Wilt, and Disperse. There are others, but these are the standard.
Weakness of the Saline Mummy: Water Vulnerability. There are others, but all share this trait.
Calx: These Mummies are creations of burial in various rock formations, ranging from limestone to modern-era concrete. Preserved by pressure, these Mummies exhibit considerable strength, and are often products of a lengthy transformation. Often, these Mummies must be destroyed physicallya task that is not often easily accomplished.
Powers of the Calx Mummy: Undead (Earth), Crush, Fossilize, and Break Weapon. There are more, but these are the standard.
Weaknesses of the Calx Mummy: Cannot Run and Slow. There are others, but all share these traits.
Amber: These Mummies are products of immersion, and eventual encasement, by amber. These Mummies resemble the being they were prior to transformation, but the process distorts the body somewhat, providing the Mummy with massive durability. Often, these Mummies must be destroyed physicallya task not easily performed.
Powers of the Amber Mummy: Undead, Hardness, Slashing Immune, Piercing Immune, and Grapple Mastery. There are others, but these are the standard.
Weaknesses of the Amber Mummy: Cannot Run. There are others, but all share this trait.
Tar: These Mummies are results of submersion in tar and peat, eventually hardening to preserve the flesh beneath. Typically, Mummies of this type possess a liquid form, solidifying as they age, slowly becoming more vulnerable to destruction. Often, these Mummies must be destroyed physically.
Powers of the Tar Mummy: Undead (Shapechanger), Slick, Weapon Stick, and Liquid Form. There are others, but these are the standard. Note, these abilities change somewhat as the Tar Mummy advances through Unlife.
Weaknesses of the Tar Mummy: Cold Vulnerability and Fire Vulnerability. There are others, but all share these traits. Note, Tar Mummies change their weaknesses as they advance through Unlife.
Quag: These Mummies are victims of immersion in swamplands, preserved by mud and pressure. Typically, these Mummies possess Druidic abilities, forced into their state as capital punishment by fearful, or unappeased, populations. Often, these Mummies must be destroyed physically.
Powers of the Quag Mummy: Undead, Bludgeon Immune, Druid Traits, and Contagion. There are others, but these are the standard.
Weaknesses of the Quag Mummy: Slashing Vulnerability. There are others, but all share this trait.
Adobe: These Mummies are creations of burial and encasement in dry earth, preserved through pressure and aridity. Typically, these Mummies have mastery over the Earth, bending it to their will. Often, these Mummies must be destroyed physically.
Powers of the Adobe Mummy: Undead (Earth), Earth Mastery, and Call Earth Elemental. There are others, but these are the standard.
Weakness of the Adobe Mummy: Slow, Cannot Run, Bludgeon Vulnerability. There are others, but all share these traits.
Unusual/Unique: These Mummies comprise nearly everything previously undisclosed, and stems from mythology rather than history. The Mummy types here range from such things as Shadow Mummy to Blood Mummy, allowing a near infinite variety of possibility. In fact, there are even records of Mummified Vampires. There are no similarities inherent by type between the Mummies contained in this grouping, nor are there true subtypes, as each Mummy tends to be unique. Also, there is no general guideline for the creation process.

Wow, I DO NOT remember that, good catch... In my defense I have slept a few times between then - almost 10 years ago - and now, and did just drive over 3k miles ...
At least this go around I had more of an idea than just bog mummies, and I put a scrap of meat on the idea, well a crumb here and there on the idea any way.
Good ideas Serl, I didn't even think about tar being a source for the cause of a mummy ... I'll add it to the ole idea pile.
Go0, Rgr on Pompeii, loving history, and Roman history, I've devoured everything I could on it. That plus the lecture is what gave me the idea for the 'ash mummy' . As for the 'mud mummy', it's good to hear that at least the idea of mud preserving a body has merit. It lets me know I'm not toooo far off the reservation.
Between you and Serl, good point on them being slow ... it makes sense to me any way. So, yeah on being slow and not able to run. Plus them being slow trudging monsters feeds into their horror.

Re: Alternate Mummies
Tom Cruise has a new version of the Mummy out this summer. My guess is that it will be less slapstick than the last one, and more filled with shootin' stuff.

Well, indeed. There's a thought - levels of power for your mummies. A mummy who was a great pharoah would have more power than his chariot driver or a priest of the grain temple!Lurker wrote:Yeah, good movie, but more god like powers than a mummy ... now make him the god of mummies ... that would be a fun gameRhuvein wrote:Whoa, the Bash Man posted in that thread. Re: Alternate Mummies
Several years back, inspired by The Mummy movie (really fun film, btw), i had created a range of Mummies. In a similar fashion to how dragons are organized by age, i had organized mummies into different power tiers. So every type of mummy, from the basic essentially-a-zombie to the awesome supernatural powers of Imhotep in the movie.

Re: Alternate Mummies
Yes, that's a hint.. this issue of Domesday is heavy on adventures THREE of them. Lots of Pregen PSs/NPCs to play them. Several new classes and race as classes.. lots of MI and some druid spells.. but its light on new monsters.
I'm working up a great one on 7 new zombies (undead), but that will be a stand alone adventure with great maps by the MadCartographer .. hope to have it out in time for Halloween this year!
SO.. yes write ups on mummies of various types or various power levels would be great.. reminds me... I have such a thing for Vampires.. going to have to dig that out and dust it off.. but I'll save that for issue X.

Re: Alternate Mummies
by this issue .... I'll try. What is the drop dead date for it ???
I could promise one or two in short order, and plan on doing the rest as a part 2 for next issue. On the other hand if work is easy (or if I don't have a day like today where I had to read nearly 1k pages of med documents for an appeal) and if there is a bit of time before the drop dead date, I may be able to get them all done and at a quality worthy of being sent in.

Re: Alternate Mummies
Do what you can when you can.. I'm still weeks away from getting this done. I was hoping for Origins, but that is not going to happen.
Even with Morty's help, we are only up to three monsters right now.. Horned Serpent, Behemoth, and Tree Oyster.
Please work in word and follow the M&T format if you can.. I'll send you a template, thanks, Captain K
