Robin Hood?

So I'm sitting here and watching the second episode of the BBC's new Robin Hood series (well new to us in the States anyway), and so far I like it well enough. I checked out the first episode on On Demand last night and figured I'd tune in for the "continuing saga." Overall it's pretty good, but I must say that I've had a thing for the Robin Hood story since I was a kid. Starting first with the Disney cartoon and then moving onto books and the movies (as cheesy as it could be the classic with Errol Flynn is still the best!) I'm a sucker for all things Robin. I even ran a campaign loosely based on a merry band of outlaws for 2nd edition for a while in my teens. So has anyone else been checking the show out? If so, then what do you think?

Haven't seen this, but would like to. So it's not on cable then, only via On Demand?

The Errol Flynn movie is one of my all time favs! Great actors, dialog and action.

Well it's on BBC America on cable, but they also have the episodes on On Demand after they air. It's on Saturday nights at 9:00 p.m. There's thirteen episodes total and once they're done with the regular run of those then the show is being put out on DVD here in the States. I'm sure that I'll add it to my collection of things that I'd like to watch with my kids...when I finally have some. That reminds me: I need to finally get the D&D cartoon on DVD. I loved that show when I was a kid, even before I knew what D&D really was.

Like most stuff on TV, its existence escaped my notice -- but thanks for the heads up! I'll be watching it on-demand, too.

I have to say I hated it. Absolutely hated it. I resent that I pay a licence fee (nearly 250 US dollars a year!) for the BBC to produce such odiferous vomitus as this.

It reminded me of the dire latter instalments of Cadfael, "written" (if you could truly call it that) after Edith Pageter was safely dead.

It's not the best thing on television, I agree. It isn't bad for a Saturday night viewing though. Of course I'm only two episodes in. There are a couple of things I've found to be a little cheesy: the cloth maker that Robin fought in the first episode; there's no money for taxes yet all the women have money to wear a lot of makeup! I've seen some later clips and I don't like the whole "We were wrong to go to the Holy Land and fight" schtick. I don't get everyone making their films and shows into a protest over the Iraq war and Blair/Bush. Sometimes I think that those people look back on Vietnam with a sort of romance: "Ahhh. I wish that I could be fighting injustice. How noble and romantic." I don't really watch too much television anyway so to have something with Robin Hood is better than having nothing at all. Plus, Marian's cute. Of course, if I had to pay a fee to the government to produce my entertainment, then I'd be pissed! Let's get a show of hands from the Americans who donate to PBS...

I even liked Men in Tights, though it had me wishing that it had been a straight telling of the legend starring Cary Elway.

I know that every time a Disney animated film gets released the word "classic" gets thrown around way too much, but Robin Hood and the Sword in the Stone are definitely classics!

I agree they are 2 of my dad's fav movies (along with apple dumplin gang) so are defiantly CLASSIC!!!!!!

I haven't seen RH yet but was thinking about giving it a look see, until I heard that. It is bad enough to cast our current outlook on how life should be into a historic setting, but you add the fact that either I or a team member/friend is ALWAYS in the current "unjust" war... It takes the fun out of entertainment!

Well....I only made it about 20 minutes into the first episode before giving up. The weapons and armor were atrocious, the dialogue was silly, and I'd seen enough...
I think I was expecting (or hoping for) something along the quality lines of the Ivanhoe series from about 10 years ago -- that was fantastic.
