Question to gamer parents.

Post by Julian Grimm »

I was wondering what a good age is to introduce RPG's to the kiddies is? And how you go about getting them interested?

Have you considered A Faery's Tale? I realize that this is a Troll Lord messageboard, but AFT lets small children into the hobby in a very innocuous way. http://www.firefly-games.com

I bought the book just for a fun read and to check out the art and I feel that it is probably better to get the younger crowd (under 8 maybe) into healthy role-playing and to encourage social interaction and as a fun family game alternative to mindless games like Sorry or Uno (don't get me wrong, Uno is fun).

7 for my first two kids, and I am talking D&D, then my 3rd kid didn't really start until he was 9 and now he is the one who loves it most at age 11.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.
Sounds obvious to me! -Gm Michael

So far 6 is going ok for my son, I'm of course using the Red Box.

I wouldn't have minded picking up Hero Quest to get him started but couldn't find it.

Oh, and on a side note about gamer parents. I just wish I could remember where I initially heard this:

How do you know you have gamer parents?

When you get in trouble they ground you for 1d6 days.

I looked at Faery Tales and showed it to my 5 year old and she wants to play it. Of course I'll have to let her play Tinkerbell or a have one named after one of Disney's princesses but that's cool.

I told here she has to work on writing her letters and numbers and counting as well and I would get it for her. She's pretty excited.

Colin Chapman made a nifty character sheet that you can download from the website to use with the game. It is a fun way to bring people into gaming.

I was 7 or 8 or so, when I started. As to how I got interested, my parents bought me the system and said "All your friends, who are your own age, are playing."

I started RPing with my son when he was about 11 (this is where he showed interest). We started out with BESM 2nd edition and now he owns his own RPGs. Currently Mike Pondsmith has hooked him on Teenagers from outer space.

Although I have to give props to the Troll Lords as he does prefer C&C over D&D 3.5
