Shooting into Melee Combat

Post by Omote »

In PHB2, where are the rules for shooting/firing into Melee combat? I can't seem to find them, although I thought they were in there.

If they are not in there, how do you handle this situation?

I don't know about btb, but I liked the 3E way of handling it, -4 to hit, when shooting into melee, if you miss you miss. No chance of hitting an ally or another target, fast and simple.

From my house rules:
Missile Combat (Dungeon Masters Guide 1e, Gygax, 1979)

If the to hit die roll indicates a miss, roll 1d6 and 1d8. The d6 indicates the distance in feet the missile was off target. The d8 indicates the direction in which the distance in feet of the miss is measured:

1 = long right 2 = right 3 = short right 4 = short before

5 = short left 6 = left 7 = long left 8 = long (over)

We just invoke the basic +4 AC to the target rule. It seems to work very well for us.

I just have them roll to hit normally. If they miss it simply flies through the melee, unless a natural 1 is rolled then a commrade is hit.

I basically use the situational modifiers with some CK discretion on a case by case basis. If the PC just shoots blindly into melee, I use -4 penalty. If they step to the side and attempt to get a bead on the monster, it might only be -2. However, like Combat_Kyle, I use a natural 1 roll as a hit to a comrade, but only roll a d4 for damage.

I guess rules for such a thing arn't exactly covered in the PHB2. I had intended with going to the +4AC rule, but Serleran makes a good point at taking the text very literally.

Depending on the angle of the shot, if the line goes through the figure's base, or through the square (hex) and misses then the following figure in the line could get hit...

Hmm... very interesting. I never really thought about this in that way.

Hehe, Omote, you mentioned Traveller's CK screen in your other thread. Did ya notice, he has sit modifiers for attack into melee? Pretty much is what I'm using!

I rule that if they miss (rolling better than a natural 1), the missile deflects off the armor and hits the ground, harming nothing, but the missle may be required to save or break (i.e. for an arrow or bolt).

I did, verily. Matter of fact that is the exact reason I brought up this question here!

Yes, or you can choose to take NO penalty on the shot and if you miss it is 50% chance of hitting an ally. IMO, that is great when you don't much care for the ally who is standing in the way, or the ally is somehow immune to the damage of it...
