Chronicles of Ramlar

Post by DangerDwarf »

After getting the Chronicles of Ramlar for my birthday, I finally had a chance to sit down and begin to really read through it today. So far I'm impressed.

The appearance of the book is great. I especially love the interior art, Jennifer Meyer's work is spectacular and I've been a fan of her stuff in the d20 Dragonlance line. I rank her up there with Peter as far as what I like in fantasy art.

The beginning of the book lays out the "creation legend" of the gods. Pretty nice read, gives a unifying feel to the pantheon and actual gives a reason for evil. I like it.

You've got your standard fantasy races (no gnomes but who cares ), with 4 different human types, 4 elf types, 2 dwarf types, halfings and a new race. Nothing ground breaking here but thats cool, I hate it when a new world or system tries to be special by going to far from my accepted fantasy ideas.

Its a class base system, but with some "wiggle-room". They call the classes Paths, and the 5 basic fantasy archetypes are represented. The path system looks to allow you to make fairly diverse characters within the same archetype. So, pretty cool.

I'm currently reading the chapter on demeanor/theme which appears to be a rather inventive system to improve your character by setting goals and such for him. Not entirely positive how it works yet as I'm just now starting into it.

I'll post more as I read further into the book. Just wanted to go over a few initial thoughts as I know there are a few on the boards who were curious about this game.

My initial thought? Awesome.

This looks like it could be a great game with a good feel to it. I'm looking forward to reading further.

Big man always keepin' us down.

We should start an organization. We'll get some preachers who play politics and call ourselves the National Association for the Advancement of Gnomish Perspective, NAAGP!

Next thing you know, some guys gonna come on the radio and make some stupid comment about Gnomes having nappy beards and then all hades is gonna bust loose.

Thanks for the review DD. Now, some of my favorite characters happen to be gnomes. One of those gnomes has the nickname "the assassin of mountains." You don't get punted that often with a nick like that!

The more I read through Ramlar the more I like the system.

The demeanor / theme system for improving your character is pretty damn cool. No hard / fast XP, it seems to promote character development better. Plus, I like the idea of Divine Boons. Have a patron deity? If you set a D/T path for it, you can earn abilities granted by that deity. Pretty sweet.

Combat doesn't look to be overly complicated. I don't think it will be C&C fast but it definitely wont be d20 slow. Armor seems to be pretty interesting. Heavier armors reduce your defensive rating but absorb more damage. Lighter armors increase your Defensive rating but aren't as protective.

There are Elite and Master paths you can work for. In some ways it is reminiscent of Prestige Classes, but far better implemented and at first glance don't seem to be simply neat power ups to be abused like in d20.

This game looks to hold a lot of promise. It's definitely one that will get play time from me instead of being pushed onto the shelf.

Bah, C&C, SW, now this? I need more game time.

Gnomes are the only truly evil characters in FRPG. No matter what it says on their character sheets, they are all CE. Just look at all the terrible things that Gnomes always do to the poor Kobolds.

Punting is too good for them.

Never You just like them better because Gnomes have higher Charisma. Don't be taken in Kobolds will inherit the RPG Earth because the Blood of Dragons flows through their veins.
