Fingers of the Forsaken Hand is very deadly
Fingers of the Forsaken Hand is very deadly
Its a good thing the Runemark Druid hasn't died or the 10th level party would have been TPKed at least 3 times now and they have just gotten to the last finger (Red for this group).
As it is everyone else has died and been Reincarnated and then polymorphed into their preferred species at least two times each.
The Polar Worm killed them, so did the Bodak, and so did the Red Door.
The Runemark Druid survived the Polar Worm because she saw it coming through the icy ground and cast a Resilient Sphere just before being swallowed. Then since the sphere cannot be moved (3E rules) the Worm was at least stuck in that location. Then when the Ranger (Syllva Fromkin) gave the death blow the Worm did its death blast and killed them, but freed the swallowed Runemark Druid so that when her Sphere' duration expired she was free to go about Reincarnating the party.
She survived the Bodak and the Red Door simply due to good save rolls.
Now the Red Door is open and this is the last "finger". I wonder how many more times they will die before all is said and done.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

LOL - I remember reading this module and thinking to myself
"good damn! Can't wait to lay this on my party of softy, wet behind the ear, used to being coddled, unthinking, min/maxers! They'a going to howel once the pain starts raining down on them"
Just remember, the pit trap calculations are wrong - so if anyone fell in there, they should have taken much more damage (my personal pet peeve - nobody ever remembers the correct calc for falling damage - not even the trolls who wrote the rules)
Cheers,
J.

Considering they're about to take on the middle finger, the best is yet to come.
Wait until they see the hydra.

Ah, so I came across as intended.
That entire dungeon isn't right, so I figured I'd stick with the theme.
Heh...and I just looked at the google ad banner:
"Protect Fingers. Stop finger injuries in doors. Free 10 year warranty. www.fingershieldsafety.com"
Sounds handy.

*gives Fiffer a fiver*
When I ran through this, we knuckled down when we needed, palmed what we could, and came out with nary a limp wrist.
Helped that we had 10 PCs, though, 7 of which were spellcasters, and of those, 4 were clerics. Maybe when I run it again, with a smaller group of less potent people, I'll be given the finger!

I'd consider more as you party could go into the single digits. You could nail them rather badly unless they properly jointed togther into a tight fisted group.

The party I ran was a Ranger, Thief, Paladin, and a Runemark Druid with her 6th level dwarf bodyguard.
Hardly any healing.
They kicked the rest of the modules butt. The final encounter was a good battle, but they won it.
They kicked the Hydra pretty easily because they used a trick from when they went through the "Against the Giants" series. They took the time to polymorph into Fire Giants, so they were immune to fire.
So just pure physical damage didn't make the fight much of a challenge for them.

Let's see...
Deaths in "Hand" at my "hand": [spoiler alert!]
1) Invisible ghast area got 2.
2) Bodak got 1.
3) Frost Worm got several. Maybe 3.
4) Salamanders got 2.
5) Glyph on Archway got 1.
6) Water Elemental got 1.
7) Trapped Pedestal in Hydra room got 1.
8) Medusae (2 statues)
9) Originally, there was a Greenvise in the Green Finger, but that's not open content. Anyway, that claimed 3 characters.
10) There was a red dragon involved at one time, that killed one I think.
12) Obsidian Golem - 1
So, my rough total is about 17 deaths. They weren't all permanent, but they count.
