The Children of Hurin

Post by acererak »

I was struck by something that Omote wrote in The Hobbit thread and I was wondering if anyone has read this book. Does anyone have a review? I tend to value opinions more here than on a site like Amazon.

I'm picking up my copy tonight. It will probably take me a few weeks to finally get to it though. Looking forward to it.

I just saw it was coming out. I'll go to the book store tonight & get a copy (I believe the release date was today actually) under the guise of getting my daughter more books. Im already tired of the velveteen rabbit etc.

Looks like a good one. I hope!

I recently orderd it from the SFBC. Things are a little busy right now (wrapping up my current job, getting ready for a new job and preparing for a move). I'll be staying away from my family for the first couple of weeks of my new job, so I'm planning on reading The Children of Hurin at that time.

I really enjoyed Turambar's tale in the Silmarillion; it was a tragic and moving story. If this is half as good as the fragments, it must be a masterpiece.

Yeah. Its not like I'd have to translate it into English or something. That would take a bit longer. My major problem with Tolkien is the boring intros... so, if I can get past the first chapter, the rest should be ok, and quick, but damn, those first 50-80 pages are always so damn ugggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg.

That's what I'm sayin'! Tolkien's writing is not exactly breezy and super rapid-fire page turning. I admit that I can't read that fast, but reading JRR in that kind of time... wow.

Datz all I'm sayin', dawgs.

If you can read that fast with good retention... you are a lucky person in my book.

Movie News

"Children of Hurin" heading to big screen?

By: Karl Schneider, News Editor

Source: Reuters

Date: Wednesday, April 18, 2007

According to Reuters, the newest J.R.R. Tolkien book, Children of Hurin, which was re constructed by his son Christopher is getting a lot of inquiries from studios.

"We all want this first and foremost to enjoy life as a book," said David Brawn, director at Tolkien publisher HarperCollins. "No one's saying never to a film (but) the film rights are reserved by the estate. We want to see what reaction it gets and then let it run its course."

The story is set long before "The Lord of the Rings" in a part of Middle-earth that was drowned before Hobbits ever appeared, and tells the tragic tale of Turin and his sister Nienor who are cursed by Morgoth, the first Dark Lord.

In today's day and age, if the book is immensly popular, then the film industry picks up on that right away. And if they want to make this film badly enough, I don't care who you are... money talks!

Verily, verily. However, it's probably safe to say that there will never be another Middle-Earth book again, at least by the man himself. Not that this has much to do with any movie adaption, but it's still a sad statement.

I might be interested in seeing a movie version. I don't mind it so much when they make movies from books, per se, as long as the very basic premise is kept... I mean, I don't expect them to stay to the letter of the book, since that's rather impossible.

Jeez, you may be right. Christopher Tolkien will probably find a 100 year old notes scribbled some where that says "Hobbits poop too much,"* in which case we'll have a Lost History of Middle-Earth book #114!

Sad but true..... I enjoy all the Middle earth & have mined the histories & unfinished tales for game ideas, but good lord how many books can someone make from old notes & ideas?
