I am cursed. Truly, cursed.
My computer crashed today; for the final time, it seems. I'm going to try to get a second opinion, but it looks like I'll probably lose everything I worked on since the last major backup... for AGP stuff, that means mid-March!
Well, except for Tell Qa, thank goodness. I backed that sucker up multiple times, every freaking day. However, as I can't do my final edit on it at work (which is where I am posting this from), it might be a few days before I can get another computer up and running, get the final edit done, and send it off to Peter. Puts me a couple days behind, but everything should still fit in the timeline. I will, however, probably lose the last few extra bits I set aside for future expansion on Tell Qa, as I didn't back up the "cut stuff" folder for a week... I meant to before I left for GTS, but never got around to it, dammit.
Also fortunately (after a fashion) as I'd been working feverishly to get Tell Qa done before GTS, I hadn't worked on anything else since early March, which means everything else should be backed up OK. And then, I'm not 100% sure I've lost everything on the hard drive yet; gotta see what can be recovered.
Now to just find another computer... the thing that really sucks about this is if I have to buy a new one, it means I have to get Vista, which makes XP seem like freaking heaven, from what I've heard. Maybe I'll just go with a Mac, though I dunno if I can afford to buy a whole new production suite, too (though I probably have to do that for Vista, as well... grrrr...)

Wow, tough, tough break man. Here's hoping things start to turn around soon. Best luck, good sir.

There are still computers out there with XP. You just have to know where to look.
Most brick & mortar PC stores will have closeout PC's, as well as not-the-most-recent-build PC's with XP. www.newegg.com (as well as many other online vendors - I'm just familiar with newegg) has some. Pretty much any place that stocks pre-built PC's (instead of pseudo-custom-build places like Dell) will still have stock with XP either on, or going to closeout soon.
My new laptop came with Vista, but I found a few of the same model that still had XP that were actually a couple hundred dollars cheaper (and came with a free upgrade to Vista Home Premium).
Having said that, Mac's are nifty, too. I almost went Mac, but I ended up getting a super-keen Acer G1 and am more than happy. $2000 poorer, but happy

Update...
We were able to recover the computer and the data; it was not as severe as it first appeared.
The Tell Qa maps are off to Peter, and I'm doing the final edit on the ms.
Wahoo!
