M&T's Treasure tables?
In the M&T book on p98 Table 4.3E Where the "*" is, I'm not sure I follow the text there. Why does it refer to swords when the weapons are miscellaneous ones?
ZW.

I've interpreted it as meaning you got extra lucky and found a gem encrusted MAGIC sword, so I go to the magic sword tables. After rolliing to see how gaudy/expensive the base sword is and then add that to the magical value of the sword.
I picture these as weapons that rich people who took themselves way to seriously had enchanted.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Just checked that table. The asterisk mentions to roll on the swords table (4.3c) to determine weapon bonus. Could you imagine a Morningstar, Nine Lives Stealer? I could.
But in reality, that's errata. The table should be 4.3b, and the bonus should be between +1 and +5.

There is no reason, except certain ones, to not have any miscellaneous weapon able to have any magical quality. A Holy Avenger does not have to be a sword, though that is the sensibility of the game that inspired it... I think it is fun to confuse the players with weird weapon combination to encourage them to actually use the "other weapons."

Agreed. I remember looking at the weapon tables in the 1st Edition DMG adn wondering why certain magic weapons had to be swords. I think it was shortly after that I began to mix things up a little.

I believe the proper sound effect is "Thwok!" when you golf club someone's head from their shoulders.

things like this is why I use the treasure tables as guides...for rough values...then ignore them for the rest of it and place what I feel is appropriate for the "history" of the dungeon or encounter.
