Yes thats right girls and guys, I've fallen to the darkside. I am now officially a LARPer.

Let the stoning begin.

But in all seriousness, I'm quite hyped about it. The people I've met so far are really supportive and helpful. And more importantly quite "normal" unlike most of the negative stereotypes out there.

I've assembled a small group of C&C gamers to head out with me as well. And we're having a ton of fun designing, making our costumes and even in some cases having custom swords made etc. In all honesty, I dont know why I didnt LARP earlier.

I mean check out the tech these days. Days of sofas on sticks (boffers) are almost gone. http://www.ateliers-nemesis.com/inventaire.htm which is a big plus for me. That was one of the reasons I hated LARP before. Mind you as you notice the site is french. It appears French Canada is way more into LARP than the rest of Canada.

That being said, it looks like the Europeans have it way better than we do here. There is definitely a cultural difference. Maybe its because North America doesnt really have such a rich and deep history like the Old World.

Ive been a reenactor since 1976. Everything from ren faire to WWII. So I was a 'LARPer' before the term was coined. ^_~`

I've done a bunch of other stuff before, which strangely are now considered sports in their own minds. Such as paintball and airsoft. But maybe its my C&C interests (ok D&D originally) but this is way more interesting to me. I wish we had better production in Ontario. Or I might have to learn french and move to Quebec.

In a way I almost feel guilty for being part of the group of people that made fun of LARPers. But then again there are some people in PnP RPGs that make us look bad too. I suppose LARPers are just too easy to make fun of.

I've been in a rebated steel sword/armored fighting group for 17 years now so I'm not one to talk. In fact, my username "Sieg" is short for "Siegfried"; namely my ECS persona name.

Well that's good. I get stoned everytime I bring it up in my gaming group. 50% of my group is supportive and the other 50% aren't. Not sure why.

I know my view on LARPing is HEAVILY tainted by the straight up freaky weirdos that did it out where I lived in California.

I know not all LARPer's are that way, but these people were just freaks and also my first impression on LARP. So it kinda stuck with me.

I'm not sure I really get LARP.

I mean, it seems cool and all...but is it just basically D&D in 'live action'?

I like rpgs in so much that I can have a character that's 'much more than I am' in real life...so I'm guessing that in LARP, it'd actually be me on horseback, in all my unremarkable glory.

...and how do you resolve combats, etc.

Do you bring dice?

I'm sooo in the dark here.

Well, I used to play army men, Man from U.N.C.L.E., James Bond vs. Smersh, among others - with all the kids in my neighborhood years back. It certainly was live action role-playing at it's finest.
I would try D&D larping in a minute - assuming there were husbands and wives in my neighborhood that would go along ('course we would all have to hide the kids so they couldn't see how much fun we would have. ]

LOL probably not a good idea to give me live steel. It would be like giving me a lightsabre.

Yes, they are a canadian based custom latex sword company. They are made safe for full contact. I just ordered a custom made hand and a half and I'm happy so far with my communication with them. Including all the details down to a wood handle and leather wraps.

Problem is that each creation takes anywhere from 3-5 weeks. So it'll be a while before I can give a review on their creations.

Well I'm looking for a club that is more RP rather than combat. My first game is with Epoch in the Toronto Area. I hope it will be good. I met some really nice people so far.

I'm heading in with a full party. So I'm quite excited. We have

2 fighters

1 rogue

1 mage

1 cleric/mage

1 ranger

There are no classes per se but we kinda built our PCs around a concept.

I'll keep you guys in touch with whats going on! I swear the whole concept of making your costume is WAY too addictive more than I would ever dream!

If you ever change your mind about Fantasy LARP, it seems that at least you get to keep the best Holloween costume on the block. It's a win/win either way.

Wow. That is great stuff Angelius.

I did the old boffer combat for a few years. I would spend all week building weaponry out of PVC and pipe insulation. Then tear it to bits after a few fights sparring with my friends. They wouldn't allow us full contact on the quests so we would fight (full contact, full armor) at sunset. Have duct tape will travel. It seems that the old romp in the woods has come a long way in the weaponry department. I still have my leather scale in the basement just in case.

I never did anything like the SCA. Actually I dont think theres anything like the SCA really. I did Kendo and what not, paintball, airsoft. I guess I want to take my RPG to the next level. I just hope that the experience will be immersive. Which is what I'm looking for rather than the combat experience. If I wanted to fight I would have kept with kickboxing.

For me, I'm not particularly shy about it. I just don't get why some people are so against it. It's like its too "uncool".

If you ask me you have WAY more of chance meeting a girl at a LARP than you do gaming in the basement. Or even paintball or airsoft.(From what I can tell.) Or even out on the night. Well at least meeting a girl that shares the same interest as you.

As soon as I jumped on the forums there must have been at least nine females just so excited wanting to help me design my costume and all other kinds of stuff. Much to the dismay of my fiance. heh.

Just kiddin'. I'm a fellow LARPER. It's a lot of fun. We're in the process of putting our own group together as well as a couple of rule sets; light and "normal" for various live-action genres.

We do fantasy as well as modern so I hear ya about the $$$.

From a certain point of view, the SCA is the longest-running and largest LARP around. Twelve thousand people gather annually for the Pennsic War in Pennsylvania. But I see what you're saying about wanting to do RPG LARPing. SCA combat is hella fun, though.
