FREE RPG Day Blues?

Post by moriarty777 »

Well, being a Canadian citizen, I and anyone else living outside the US won't be seeing much of Free RPG Day. Hopefully, the success will ensure it spreading the next year.

Here's something nice though, if you can't get your hands on a printed free copy of something you're really keen on getting, Noble Knight Games has got some. I expect these are limited supply though and even then, there is a limit of 3 items per customer and there can be no duplication.

Details can be read here:
http://www.nobleknight.com/blog.asp

I was looking to order a thing or two anyway so this came as a bit of a bonus!

Look at the thread I just posted for Free RPG Day at Green Ronin. You'll get some viacarious action.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Afraid not... but that's because Free RPG Day is restricted to the US. It's the first year they do this and from what I understand, they hope to expand it to include Canada next year.

Don't feel bad, you can't get stuff, since its not available. What sucks is having it possible, but not having a store with the scrote to care. I called mine up, and they were all "huh, whatsit? Is that officially sanctioned by Wotc?" I'm like "umm, why would WotC want its competitors to get advertising? Did they not just kill the major advent of such things?" Oh well, morons. I have friends in other parts of the country... they are on the hunt!! Must get me a C&C starter thingie.

I'm about to drive 50 minutes to the nearest participating store. Not too bad, if you ask me. I promised my wife that I'd take her around all the tourist sites in Staunton, VA afterwards. A small price to pay for some quick start rules, some Wilderlands of High Adventure, and a little Sinister Secret at Whiterock.

I figure if the day is a success, I'll have a participating store in C-ville next year.

My local store had all the stuff out, but because they weren't sure how much demand they were going to get, they limited everything to one piece per person. So I got the C&C quickstart.

In the good news department, the store itself is open non-stop until their normal closing time on Sunday. The owner told me to come back tonight or tomorrow, and if there was anything left, I might be able to snag some more.

I haven't been paying attention, but is Tell Qa going to be available in PDF if I can't get it at the FLGS?

There's the possibility of an expanded print version available at some point.

Good, because I ordered/selected the two Goodman Modules and the Paizo Module from Noble Knight Games. (Which has already been shipped to me according to an e-mail I got a couple of hours ago)

I figured/hoped to get TLG free RPG day stuff the next time I ordered from them, will will hopefully be in a week or two.

Well, I just scratched off another gaming store from my list - Games Universe in case your wondering! (Milwaukee area).

*Just so you know, I was one of the first people at the store this morning.*

Why, you ask?! Well, when I got there the guy behind the desk looked at me like was speaking in an alien tongue when I asked about it - he then called his boss. He then goes to the back of the store and carries some stuff out and plops it on the table. He states that that's all they have because alot of the stuff never got there! I'm sorry, but it sounds like a load of bulls&*t to me. They only had a couple of things and they were horsec$%p selections.

No C&C, no Goodman Games, no WOTC - nothing! And this is a major gaming store in our area! They get everything else on time, but somehow none of stuff that people were looking for made it! Hmmm....

I have a sneaking suspicion that all that stuff went to the people who work there! I may be wrong and I hope I'm right on that, but something tells me I'm not!

I think that good customer service is harder to find than these modules!!
Effen pricks! Sorry, this whole thing just rubs me the wrong way. I can deal with not getting there on time or they were out of them, but this just stinks!

They are not allowed to sell that stuff. Even though they paid for it they got a cut price (at cost) with the understanding that it is to be given away.

So if you ever see that store selling those materials let Joe Goodman know. At the very least they won't be participating in Free RPG Day next year. No matter how much they want to.

Your probably right about store employees getting it. If they did the store owner is stupid.

Well, some of the stuff is instantly collectible and likely to garner good value to collectors, especially the out-of-country ones. If, though, you want the C&C stuff, go to NKG. I just did and they had them still in stock.

By the time I got to my local RPG/comic shop there was only a few things left, all the C&C quick starts were gone! (Please Troll Lords, I beg thee make this item available again). Anywho I did manage to snag "The Sinister Secret of Whiterock" Module (Goodman Games), "Temple of Blood" module (Wicked Fantasy Factory) and Paizo's Game Mastery Module "Hollow's Last Hope". Not a total Loss.

On a side note: If I didn't know already about free rpg day, these guys at the store wouldn't have mentioned it, and it seemed like they didn't want to part with the goods as well...Oh well.

Lucky me. My store had everything sitting out on a table. I was there for at least an hour, and only one other person picked anything up. I grabbed the Quickstart rules, the DCC adventure, and Tell Qa. Tell Qa is very detailed - I would go so far as to say it's my pick o' the litter this year.

I was there for an hour, and NOBODY had picked anything up. In fact, I was the only customer. However, my location here is running lots of non-RPG events along with a couple World of Darkness demos, so they were expecting more people later on. Otherwise, I'm sure they'd let me have a copy of Tell Qa to go along with the C&C quickstart.

Oh well...I'll find out tonight or tomorrow.

Actually, they did not get it at cost, they got it for the cost of shipping.

Believe me, if the retailers had been paying the cost of printing, I would have printed as many copies as they wanted of Tell Qa! The publishers didn't get one red cent from retailers... we footed the bill ourselves. And between advertising, collation, and shipping, Impressions is lucky if it broke even, even with publisher sponsorships...

So please, yes, let Impressions or Goodman or the respective publishers know if their products "disappeared" in the back room...

Well, I certainly hope that the first 'RPG Day' was a success overall for the stores which ran it and the companies who helped this thing become possible. I hope that there isn't too many horror stories since I'd really like to see this grow.

To all those stores which made the effort to live up to the spirit and idea of RPG Day ... thanks!

And to all those companies who also participated and shelled out to make this possible... MANY MANY THANKS! May good fortune and revenue reward your efforts!

Free RPG Day was a bust at my FLGS. While they advertised it on their website and on the store, almost nobody showed up to pick up the freebies. I was able to go back in there today and pick up everything else I wanted.

There are still things left over, including multiple copies of The Sinister Secret Of Saltm...uhh Whiterock and the C&C Quickstart.

Can you pick me up a copy of the quickstart and a DCC? I'll pay shipping and some gas money. How far is the store from you?

If your willing and able, add me to the list for Tel Qa and the Quickstart. I got the PDF version during the "accident" a couple of weeks ago, but would like to see the print version.

I'll see what I can do about getting more quickstarts and the DCC. They had three of the DCC's, five quickstarts, and only two copies of Tell Qa. The store itself is about ten minutes drive from where I am.

No promises though.

Traveller- Can I add myself to the "Can you get for me" list? I'm after the C&C Quickstart rules and the Warhammer FRP adventure.

The store I went to was 2-hours away and only allowed one item per person. I grabbed the DCC because I had promised to grab a copy for somebody.

Since I haven't seen it mentioned here yet, Goodman Games will be offering it's FRD products for $2.00 each in July.

Nope. That is when the first one becomes available. The X Crawl, I believe.

The Whiterock 51.5 is in November, if I remember correctly.

Thanks Trav!

If you have Paypal, and are successful, I can send you payment tonight.

I was happy to see that Goodman Games will be offering to sell the print version of these freebies in the coming months and the prices more than reasonable. It would be kind of nice to see TLG do the same with their quickstart.

I know some of you have had problems getting various items -- I hope you track them down with little to no cost.

Personally, I can't wait to lay my hands on the print versions of some of there!
