grappling bonuses for monsters

Post by The 8th Samurai »

When a PC grapples he/she gets to add his/her strength bonus to the d20 roll (+/- size modifier). If allowed the CK can also allow the PC to add their BtH bonus to the grapple check.

1. I plan to allow my PCs to add their BtH to the d20 roll. However, I know you only add the monster's HD to the roll (+/- size modifier). However, if the PCs get to add their BtH to the roll shouldn't I give a strength bonus to the monster's roll in addition to their HD (which is used for the monster's BtH)? This way the monster has BtH + some strength modifier +/- size modifier + d20 = monster's grapple check. For example, an ogre is a 4 HD monster. Thus, the ogre's grapple check would normally be 4 + 2 (size modifier against a medium sized opponent) + d20. However, the PC not only will get to add their strength modifier they also get to add their BtH. It seems that the ogre would receive more than just 4 + 2 added to their grapple check. How would you figure a monster's strength bonus to be added to the grapple check? I can't find any stats (str, dex, con, etc) for any monsters in the Monsters & Treasure book.

2. The defender is allowed his/her strength mod and dexterity mod added to the defender's AC of 15 (+/- size modifier). As above, but how do I figure other stat bonuses such as dex, con, int, etc?

Happy gaming

I believe that the PC rolls every time; STR roll to grapple monster, STR roll to resist grapple from monster. As for bonus's to the Challenge Rating for STR I think it just depends on the monster (like +1 for strong humanoids, +2 for strong/large beasts, +3 to +4 for giants, +5 to +6 for older dragons. Of course if someone tries to grapple with a Terasque, I think there screwed.)

But according to everyone else the bonus's shouldn't be that big. Thats just off the top o my head.

There is no direct formula for generating any stat (except Intelligence, as it is listed by "category" with a range) for monsters so you must use your own intelligence to do so, based on whatever you feel is right for the creature. For example, an ogre has about an 18 Strength, simply from the gauntlets of ogre power, and giants are a bit buffer based on the girdle of giant strength. If, however, you want to wrestle/grapple something like a huge dragon, I'd just laugh. What good does it do? Maybe you could keep its jaw closed for a moment, but it would just claw you off... so, I say, just adjudicate ad hoc like.

You should rely on a "rule" only when you must.
