Weapons

Post by Ramrod The Wizard »

My copy of the PHB came yesterday and i am really impressed by the game, though im still confused about some mechanics. My only complaint is the lack of a visual reference or writeup for the weapons/armor/items. Some of the weapons do not come up in image searches, so I have to rely on the collective limited knowledge of mid-evil weaponry that my friends and I posses.

I have the same problem - trying to describe some of the weapons to my players (who also happen to be my children) has been difficult at best. A visual reference would have been nice.

You're quite welcome. I'll send the stuff to anyone who needs it. Same address as above.

Definitely e-mail Serl. He put together several nice documents on armor and weapons in PDF. Unless he has combined them since I got them about a year ago.

While I am thinking about it, have you updated/added to those documents Serl? If so I'll be wanting to e-mail you as well.

No, I just threw them together and haven't gone back to make any changes. If there is something new in the 3rd print PHB I'll add to it, and maybe combine them all into one document.

Haven't gotten to the non-combat equipment yet, but that's on my list as well.

If you want to spend some money to get pictures, Vol. II of the Gygaxian Fantasy Series ("World Builder") has lots of pictures of weapons and armor. I flipped through it at LGGC and kept finding myself muttering, "So that's what it looks like!"

Heh, pictures of weapons is a challenge and until Serle's documents, I was lucky enough to have the 2E Arms & Equipment guide, Unearthed Arcana, World Builder and the 1E, 2E, 3E & 3.5E PHs.

These were critical for me when starting C&C, as most of my players were new to D&D/C&C.

The Trolls should try hard to fix this situation in order to get the new player "loot" from WotC.

VOl II of the GFS mentioned above takes care of the matter nicely. That entire line of books is to be retooled to C&C and LA baselines in the next printing. A nice tool for game masters who need to describe said weaponry.

There's no room to cram any more into the PHB. Trust me, I tried. ^_~`

Ah, I was about to send off for that. Should I wait?

Well, that is probably a silly question.

Depends on how big a hurry you are? The changes will most likely be largely cosmetic.

2E Equipment Guide, still my favorite! I use this in my C&C games.

Hmmm, noble knight has a bunch of this old 2e stuff right now. What to get, though. The Gygax book, and all this 2e stuff I am thinking about: Creative Campaigning, Catacomb Guide, Monster Mythology, Spell Encyclopedias, Arms and Equipment. I can get the Gygax and one of the others or three of the others.

What say you, Crusaders?

I can help with those. I'm much cheaper than NKG.

I think that C&C, maintaing rules-light and rules-freedom should be a more "independant game". Not needing to consult other D&Ds to complete important aspects of learning and playing the game.

That will make it more succesful!!

That was actually one of the goals: to get people interested enough so they might try and find out the stuff on their own. Kind of like a learning tool as well as a slick game system. Since the game was intended for new players and old, leaving stuff out works: the old players can just rely on what they already know -- new players can find the stuff and maybe read a little in the process. C&C is about making more intelligent players... you know.

I just threw together my documents because I wanted to help if people had problems finding the stuff.

Oh, I am definitely a rules-light kind of GM/CK.

Like when Elric! came out I kept running Stormbringer 1 'cause Elric! was too rules heavy. For me.

I'm am definetly NOT saying that C&C must be a rules-heavy game. And a game that tries to cover every situation with rules. Hell no, that's why I like C&C.

But I think the equipment section could really use more pics and item descriptions. I got them from other products.

But C&C will be more independant for new role players.

I was saying...C&C hits the spot for me too.

And I would like to see some more stuff like weapon descriptions as well, and material like the appendices in the 1st AD&D DMG. Surely no problem with the C&C rules, but some of that sort of material really comes in handy...

As I said, there's no room to put anything else in the PHB. It's crammed as it is. Unless anyone relishes looking at a book thats 7 point font? ^_~`

Thanks for the offer, but I have decided to exchange a bunch of stuff for credit at NKG, get all the books I want for my game in one fell swoop (with a mixture of credit and cash). Also, I want the NM items, even though they are more expensive. I do appreciate your offer.

I bet you had to trade an awful lot of stuff to get that amount of credit... I could not do that (I'm actually starting to get a bad taste for NKG, in general.) Good luck, and I hope everything is as you wish it to be.

BTW, the Arms and Equipment is not all its cracked up to be. Aurora's Whole Realms Catalog is 300% better.

Thanks for the tips.

I have had better than average luck with NKG. And a bad habit of buying rpgs just to read, once. Well, it IS my only bad habit. Heh, my wife puts up with it so how bad could it be?

Last time, I traded one foot-and-a-half by foot-and-a-half box full of stuff that I hadn't looked at for some time, got $75 in credit. I think something in there was probably rare...I'll do OK. Thanks again.

Man, 18" x 18".... nope, could not do that. My bad habit is having too many items on my want list, and buying not so great copies so I can have one, reading through it, and then getting a better copy to not shred. Then, I have to get another copy so the first one doesn't totally fall apart. :( Pack rat at heart. I blame my mom. :) If she hadn't destroyed and prevented me from getting this stuff when I was growing up... I wouldn't have to compensate for it now. Yeah. That's it! :)

Seriously, its cool. I just like to get as much as I can for as little as I can, and I don't find NKG to be that ticket (though, they are still great for certain items that are hard to find otherwise, and sometimes, they are on very good sales -- like the DunDraCon artifact card sets.)

Also, forget 2e for a good resource on weapons or armor. Get the Palladium Compendium of Arms, Armour and Castles. It has 700+ weapons in it, and like 60 types of armor. Fully illustrated, too.

...and if you get the newer editions... pretty cheap too!

(they seem to have split it up into smaller books)

You've got 'Weapons & Armor' as well as 'Weapons & Castles' which will cover what you need...
