Walrus vs. Heavy warhorse

Post by Tadhg »

Well, my adventuring group is considering upgrading their mounts from light war horses. Walruses are a bit cheaper than the heavy warhorse, but we'd like to know the stats for mounted walruses ~ AC, movement, HD, attacks and such. Surprisingly, there's nothing in the M&T.
Thoughts?

Interesting you should bring this up. My brother and I finally spent some time last night creating a character for C&C (first time we've done chargen with this system), and both thought it was hilarious that they had Walrus listed in the equipment section. Walrus! Seriously??

Now, we are both native Californians, so don't have much experience with the animal, but I had never heard or thought of them being used as a mount. Doesn't fit in with most of the fantasy I've read, and it is definately one of those choices we wouldn't be able to take seriously. Now, for a fantasy game, anything can happen. But I just don't think I can picture anyone realistically using a Walrus as a mount.

It probably doesn't help that when I think Walrus, the first thing that comes to mind is "adventurer slash explorer", thanks to my five year old niece (Disney movie reference, someone is probably familiar with it).

Heh, well let's see...

On land, they'd be slow as heck. In the sea, much faster. High AC (lots of thick blubber to get through), and deal plenty of damage (tusks). Finally, high HD- these are big critters.

Here's how i'd stat them:

WALRUS:

No Encountered: 1 or 20-200

Size: Large

HD: 9

Move: 5 ft., swim 40 ft.

AC: 20

Attacks: Tusks (2d10)

Saves: P

Int: Animal

Alignment: Neutral

Type: Animal

TR: nil

XP: 400+9

Very serious!!!

But since you're in Cal, substitute sea lions!
Other regional and world water mount substitutions are welcome!

Very nice, a good start.

But they fly too.

See the Beatle album ~ Magical Mystery Tour. The only Beatles instrumental song - Flying was about walruses*!
*[Ya see - it's related to another fun song on the record that is useful for D&D. ]

ROFL! The funny thing is, I actually can picture sea lions doing the job. Walrus I really don't have a good point of reference for. It seems comically funny. But mention sea lions, and part of me says "That could be really cool!" So I guess I stand corrected.

Heh, I remember my 2nd visit to 'Frisco and the wharf. Sea lions sunning and waiting for food. Someone (a restaurant worker or fish monger) would dangle fish sections down to the water to have a little fun with the sea lions!

Oh, and you Floridians can use manatees. Just remember slow wake in the manatee zones in the inter-coastal waterways. Otherwise, the manatee mages will hurl barracudas at you.

No no no! The line is "goo goo gajoob"! (as opposed to Simon & Garfunkel's "coo coo cachoo")

This topic is especially timely since I just started my first C&C campaign last night and during character creation we also stumbled upon the walrus in the equipment list. I was kind of hoping the PCs would pool their starting $$ and invest. Alas, it was not to be.

You'd probably be a lot safer trying to use a giant, sex-starved, sabre-toothed wolverine for a riding beast. Walruses are Not Fun.

If you're looking for water-only mounts, dolphins or orcas spring to mind.

Quick Anecdote:

A player of mine once had his character wish for a way to "travel by water, air, or land" after seeing another character use the Apparatus of Kwalish, (which is essentially a magical submarine, for those unfamiliar.)

. . .

He was soon the proud owner of a loyal and well-trained Giant Duck.

My kids have animal cups for rinsing etc. when brushing at night. I grabbed the top cup tonight and it was...

WALRUS!

Leaving for a pseudo-camping trip tomorrow with the two oldest and my C&C books.... bye.

I thought that the Walrus was only commonly domesticated and ridden amongst the Damprgar (Aquatic Dwarves).

(Then there's the Rain of Walrus spell, the higher-level version of Jflander's Rain of Watermelon as found in the Grimoire of Al'Amarja.)

I'll see your googachoob and raise you a callooh and a callay, by way of Gygax and Dungeonland.

THE WALRUS

NO. ENCOUNTERED: 1 (Unique)

SIZE: Medium

HD: 12 (d8)

MOVE: 20 ft., 40 ft. (swim)

AC: 17

ATTACKS: 1 bite (2d6), 2 flipper slaps (1d4)

SPECIAL: Suggestion

SAVES: M, P

INT: Superior

ALIGNMENT: Chaotic Neutral

TYPE: Magical Beast

TREASURE: None

XP: 1,375+12

This is a friendly and bumptious-seeming walrus. If attacked the walrus will fight, fearlessly doing its utmost.

Suggestion: The Walrus can use the spell suggestion three times each day.

THE CARPENTER

NO. ENCOUNTERED: 1 (Unique)

SIZE: Medium

HD: Thief 15 (d6, BtH +5)

MOVE: 30 ft., 50 ft. (ring of swift swimming)

AC: 19 (bracers of defense +6 and dex)

ATTACKS: 1 dagger (1d4+2) and 1 offhand dagger (1d4+2, -3 to hit)

SPECIAL: Thief abilities

ABILITIES: STR 16, DEX 18, CON 10, INT 12, WIS 14, CHA 15

ALIGNMENT: Chaotic Neutral

TYPE: Humanoid

TREASURE: 50 fake pearls (1gpv), ring of swift swimming, bracers of defense +6

XP: 6,000+15

The carpenter will take any occasion to get out of work, begging anyone he meets to perform some difficult (but probably lucrative) task for him. Once the task is done, The Carpenter and The Walrus will attempt to swindle their benefactors out of any profit. If they can relieve adventurers of hard-earned loot at the same time, so much the better!
