Question concering magical item

I just downloaded the preview to M&T, core books on the way, and would like clarification on something.

I am semi familiar with ability checks, however it has been awhile.

The +2 nine lives stealer says you have to make a con check at CL 2 or be struck dead. I understand the Con check but what does CL 2 mean. Is that basically a -2 to your check?

The CL (Challenge Level) is added to the CON check for the total CC (Challenge Class). For example if CON was a prime attribute, then the total con check needed to be rolled would be a fourteen ( 1 4 ). 12 (CON prime) + 2 CL.

The 2 is the difficulty, so, yes... its a -2 penalty, if you prefer looking at that way. Technically, its not a penalty, its a "bonus," to the challenge.

See:

d20 + Level + Con modifier > = 12 / 18 +2 (or 14 / 20)

I personally think the difficulty of the nine life stealer is low. I'd make it a 8, but I'm warped.

Omote, there is an option to disable smilies for one post if you want to do that. Just click the check box next to "Disable Smilies in this post" and everything will come out allright, although it does shut off all smilies for that post.
