Watch out, Paks!

HOOL

NO. ENCOUNTERED: 1 (solitary)

SIZE: Large

HD: 7 (d8)

MOVE: 30 ft.

AC: 18

ATTACKS: 2 Claws (1d8), Bite (1d10)

SPECIAL: Darkvision

SAVES: P

INT: Animal

ALIGNMENT: Neutral

TYPE: Animal

TREASURE: 2

XP: 180 + 7

"Part of the pile heaved up - and up - a vast hairy shoulder topped by an equally hairy and vast face. A rhuemy eye glared at her from under shaggy bows. And the mouth opened on a double row of very sharp teeth. ... Taller, broader, and apparently stronger, than any human, it had a roughly human shape. Heavy pelt over thick skin - long arms ending in clawed hands, and a surpassingly ugly face. Its deep-voiced bellows shook the air around them."

Big, tough, stupid, dirty - Hools are solitary creatures that like to lair underground, preferring ruins to natural caves. They make a "bed" from the tattered remains of their victims' bones, clothing and fur. They do not collect treasure, but the objects carried by their meals will often litter their bed.

Combat: Hools in their nest will appear to be a big pile of garbage. Because of this, Hools treat Wisdom as a primary attribute when determining surprise. Once combat begins, Hools will attack mostly with their huge claws, using both each round. If an opponent is knocked down, the Hool may start attacking with its teeth, swallowing whatever it is able to tear off.

But didn't one of the paladins/Marshalls/Druids (er, Kuakganni) confirm that it wasn't a hool because hools live in the water? I thought the monster was eventually identified as a Gibbon or something. Damn it, now I've got a research project...

She calls it a hool when relating the tale to the Grand-Marshall in Fin Panir, so I figured the name stuck. Someone else in the group that killed it asked if hools were water creatures, and Arvid says something like "All I know is it's dead."

I thought a bunch of not-hools were driven out of Llyonya for the final battle, someone asked what they were, Paks said hools, and someone older and wiser corrected her and gave us the accurate name.

I haven't gotten that far in my current re-read.
