New Monster - Help me pick out a name

Post by Combat_Kyle »

I made this monster to encounter my party who are currently traveling through a large jungle and I wanted to have something other than spiders to drop on them from the tree tops. I thought a flying lizard would be cool, but then I though a giant flying lizard the size of a bear would be better. So I made up some stats and I am ready to pull these on the party. I dont have a name for it; I am hoping you guys could help me with that. Please feel free to add constructive criticism.

No. Encountered: 1-2, 3-12

HD: 5 (d12)

Size: Large

Move: 20ft, 30 ft (Climb), 15ft (fly)

AC: 17

Attacks: 2 Claws (1d6), Bite (3d4), Tail (2d8)

Special: Poison, Acid Resistance, Darkvision 60ft

Saves: P

Int: Inferior

Alignment: Neutral

Type: Magical Beast

Treasure: 3

XP: 280+5

The __________ resembles a monitor lizard with bat-like wings, long muscular tail, several dagger-like teeth and bulbous red eyes. __________ are very large, averaging 10ft in length and weighing over 300lbs. These creatures populate thick jungles and ancient forests, living in large nests they build in the mightiest trees, the only clue of the location of a nest are the piles of chewed bones and debris on the forest floor. __________ typically live in pairs but can be found in large groups up to a dozen. __________ breed for life, the female __________ lays 1d4 eggs per year during the rainy season, __________ are very territorial and aggressive during this period. An enterprising adventurer might be tempted to brave a __________ hunt as their eggs and hides fetch a large price in poison production and armor making respectively.

Combat: These creatures are nocturnal predators and will attempt to eat anything it can carry back to its nest. Most of the time they are cautious predators that prefer to ambush their quarry from the tree tops, using their poison to weaken the strongest targets before mauling them with their claws and powerful bite. During the hatching season, __________ will fight till dead in defense of their young.

Poison: The tails of __________ end in a large spear-like stinger that can deliver a powerful muscle decaying toxin. Anyone struck by the tail of a __________ must make a Constitution save or lose 1d6 Strength points. This damage can only be repaired by a regeneration spell. The yolk of a __________ egg can be made into an ingested poison that has the same effect.

Acid Resistance: __________ skin is especially tough; as a result they ignore half the damage they take from acid. Armor made from __________ skin is equivalent to hide armor and imparts the same resistance to acid.

Ah, the dreaded "Venenifer Silva Myotis Varanidae (Poisonous Forest Bat Monitor).

Seriously though, actually, I'd go with some kind of giant "Agama".

More specifically, I suggest taking a good look at the "draco volan" or the "Chlamydosaurus kingi" on the internet. Might give you some ideas.

Tree flyer

Tree drake

Flying monitor

Flying death

I am leaning towards Toxin Drake. But keep the suggestions coming.
