I Just fell in love with Finland

Post by Troll Lord »

I'm sure many of you have seen this as I think it has been bouncing around for awhile, but this is one cool song and these people are just cool. The red has some passion for the song and the language is just really, really cool.

I was gonna say "Tom of Finland?" Thankfully not. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Maybe it's just me, but when I listen to them I can't help but think about Gilligan and that smokin Ginger stranded on their island!

Am I alone on this one?

The language strongly resembles some dialects spoken in northernmost italy.

I thought this was going to be about the Kalevala. The song was okay (and now it's stuck in my head -- thanks), but the Kalevala is some seriously cool shit.

A friend of mine is half-Finnish (other half is Punjabi, raised in London), and when her mother came to visit, I loved hearing them speak Finnish to each other.

Shame that on her visit there I couldn't get a Viekka Gustafsson action figure.

Very cool!

Now play it again and sing along:

The sound of a polka drifted from my neighbor's

and set my feet a-tapping oh!

Ieva's mother had her eye on her daughter but

Ieva she managed to fool her, you know.

'Cause who's going to listen to mother saying no

when we're all busy dancing to and fro!

Ieva was smiling, the fiddle it was wailing

as people crowded round to wish her luck.

Everyone was hot but it didn't seem to bother

the handsome young man, the dashing buck.

'Cause who's going to mind a drop of sweat

when he's all busy dancing to and fro!

Ieva's mother she shut herself away

in her own quiet room to hum a hymn.

Leaving our hero to have a spot of fun

in a neighbor's house when the lights are dim.

'Cause what does it matter what the old folks say

when you're all busy dancing to and fro!

When the music stopped then the real fun began

and that's when the laddie fooled around.

When he took her home, when the dancing was over

her mother angrily waiting they found.

But I said to her, Ieva, now don't you weep

and we'll soon be dancing to and fro!

I said to her mother now stop that noise

or I won't be responsible for what I do.

If you go quietly and stay in your room

you won't get hurt while your daughter I woo.

'Cause this fine laddie is a wild sort of guy

when he's all busy dancing to and fro!

One thing I tell you is you won't trap me,

no, you won't find me an easy catch.

Travel to the east and travel to the west but

Ieva and I are going to make a match.

'Cause this fine laddie ain't the bashful sort

when he's all busy dancing to and fro.

Yeah, I tried to follow the Finnish words a few times, but to no avail. Very fast paced and really cool.

Here's the techno version, same band, bad video.

Get back to work dude, nobody told you to come up for air until after you got at least three new releases out. Begin.

I'm suddenly thinking how excellent it would be if Steve and Davis could join this group for one performance!!

Wow. Holy lappi and salted herring, Batman!

Is it me or do these Finns seem kinda geeky? Which is of course a good thing...

After watching the second video it's now...kinda catchy.

Although the American English language has been touted as being one of the hardest to learn because of all the slang and double word use, I heard Finnish is one of the hardest languages to learn simply because it'shard to learn. Sogood luck Steve!
Now I'll go back to trying to sing along in English thanks to Rhuvein.

So, if one learns the language properly even down to regional idom, does that mean ones put a polish on their Finnish?

Ahhh the puns!
I just figured out something else about that song. There are no instruments, which is really cool and pleasing to me old ears.

I wish this wasn't the first thing I saw and heard this morning. I think this is a sign of a very weird day to come...

Oh hell... this is going to be stuck in head day.

Well... since I can't beat them... join them... here's another video variant.

Think 'Night at the Roxbury'

I'm thinking it, but nothing is happening. Well, nothing that I care to mention anyway. I didn't see that movie though. Was there supposed to be a link?
