Yeah, sorry. I don't mean to bore everyone with yet another Rhu growing up in Chicago - sports thread, but I've got to at least just throw out a mention of my team - The Chicago Cubs.

Having grown up a few blocks away from Wrigley Field (628 W. Addison) and after school going out to Waveland avenue to shag homeruns from Ron, Ernie and Billy, I'll just only say . . . whoa 99 years since the last Cub winning World Series.

Whew,

my dad was 3 when Babe Ruth called his pointing homer run at Wrigley.

Me, I hung out with the Bleacher Bums in '69 in left field.

Anyone know the infield in the '69 All Star Game?

Can't say I'm overly fond of baseball, but I have gone to several Cubs games. Loved it every time.

I'm still a little disappointed in the Braves, but oh well. I'm hoping that my favorite American League team, the Red Sox, take it. In my baseball hierarchy they come directly after my hometown team. I always like to see it when a team finally gets to make their fans happy. However, I have a sister-in-law who's from Chicago (who never watches baseball mind you ) who I'm sure would not shut up if the Cubs go all the way. She's one of those who always has to mention how much better things are in Chicago ad nauseum yet won't move back there. So I'm hoping that they win for you Rhu...and drop every fly ball for her.

I'm a Red Sox fan for much the same reason Rhu is a Cubs fan (although I didn't grow up so close! - I was about 15 miles away). Many fond memories of going to games in full gear - cap, shirt, glove, baseball cards (for mojo and stats) - and watching Yaz, Rooster, Fred Lynn, Jim Rice, Dewie Evans, Luis Tiant, Carlton Fisk, etc.

But, if the Bosox can't win it, then I will pull for the Cubs. They've got a tough row to hoe, however!

I have little love for baseball, but since the Cubs have not won the series in about a century , I guess I'll pull for them. (Over my usuall, anybody but the Yankees. )

I remember the 'Bartman' game (sorry to dig up old bones, Rhu) a few years back. If things had fallen differently, the Cubs could have played the Red Sox in the World Series (the Sox had yet to 'break the curse' at the time). I was so wanting to see that series, but the Marlins and the Yankees screwed it up (as the Yankees are wont to do...).

I hope to see the Cubs play this year, against the Sox. I consider myself a Red Sox fan, but I don't normally say that in public. REAL Red Sox fans have a way of pouncing on anyone that claims to like the team after the World Series win, (i.e. "How long have you been a fan?! You remember that game back in ' when did that that lost that game against the Yankees? I didn't think so. A fan... pfft"). Red Sox fandom is less a hobby and more a religion.
I'm pulling for the Cubbies. Sweet Lou should be a character through the whole thing, which is cool. The Phillies seem happy just to be in the play-offs. The Rockies are spent. The D-backs are short on experience. The Cubs could easily pull it out...

A Cubs/Red Sox series would be great. And I've always hoped for a White Sox/Red Sox series.

But, I've always REALLY REALLY hoped for a White Sox/Cubs series.

Then it would be wild. My wife is a south sider so she'd be the Sox fan and wear their uniform/hat. I'd be the Cubs fan and wear their uniform/hat and my daughter would have to wear a split uniform and root for (or against) both teams!

Yaz and the Green Monster. I drove past it a couple of times on business trips, but just couldn't seem to work in a game. Fisk is loved here in Chicago as well.

Heh, no worries. The fan thing never bothered me. I've always maintained that a great team will win despite errors, bad umpire calls & various other chance things including fan interference.

They are nine innings, three outs, and nine players all needing to perform or produce better than the other team in every game of a series.

Team game, team effort and the Cubs lost that playoff series not a fan, IMO.

Any team not on the east coast. I hate the attitude of east coast teams especially the Yankees.

Can't Identify with the Cubs though. That whole being my teams rivals thing and all.

Khartsfield, how long have you been a Red Sox fan? You remember that game back in 1986 when Bill Buckner let the ball dribble between his legs and ended up costing us the game (and series) against the Mets? I didn't think so. A fan...pfft.
Just kidding. But I was accused of being a bandwagon Dallas Cowboys fan until one of my friends chimed in and said "He's a real fan. He bet on them in every game in our football pool in that season they went 1-15 (1988)." As a Red Sox fan, I don't care if you jumped on board since 2004, as long as you have seen the light.

Sox/Cubs? Has potential, but the Sox are hitting on all cylinders at the right time, making them far more dangerous an opponent in my VERY biased opinion. But, I'm doing the smart thing, and rooting for the Indians to beat the damn Yankees, so the Sox can beat the stuffing out of the Indians, etc.

If the bosox weren't in the playoffs, I would be pulling for the cubs. I too hope to see the Indians beat the Yankees.

So? If I started up a thread on selecting sacrificial people by lack of the ability to place a 2 inch sphere through a hoop by bouncing it off their hip, that would mean that practice still happens? Sweet!

Talking about something doesn't indicate it is current, or archaeologists and historians would not have any kind of occupation.

Anyone play in one of those fantasy baseball things? The C&C group I play with is involved in one of those (I'm not, since I really could care less for most sports.)

That's why it was special a couple years ago when the White Sox won the WS. They were a great group of players without any of the above mentioned baggage.

You've got me thinkin' some random thoughts:

Baseball is a funny/interesting game - at times. Some like the pitcher's duel - other, the slugfest. I don't watch much during the summer, only the playoffs.

It sure is more fun to play than to watch.

We grew playing 16" softball, 12" and league hardball. I played as recently as 3 or 4 years ago with my daughter.

I used to love going to batting cages to keep my timing up on hitting.

I've been to 2 minor leagues parks (in Maine and here in Gary, IN) and they were very enjoyable and less crowded and intense than the majors but every bit as exciting.

The commercialization of the game by the TV networks is certainly boring and overwhelming.

Anyway, I had the game on last night and watched a little, but was mostly online and doing other stuff.

See, that's exactly what I'm talking about. It used to be a game. Much like other professional sports, soccer included. Somehow that's changed, and its ruined what was once "special."

Like you, I used to love to actually play, grab the bat, swing at some fast balls flying at me... the sheer joy of it is quite impressive, really. But, I haven't touched a baseball in some odd 7 years or so, much less a bat for any purpose other than to try and break it across my knee (still can, but it hurts a lot more these days.)

Damn commercialization.

Anyway, I really hate the Yankees... or, rather, I like their history, but not the majority of fans I've ever come across. If I have an ego, well, it is shamed by them.

My fiances dad likes the Braves (maybe its the Indians, but I think its Braves since they are in Atlanta, right?,) and a game will be on every now and then when we're there to visit, but I don't watch. I think I got sick of it around the time of the strike... that just really annoyed me, and baseball has not recovered in my "heart."

Well, time to close out this thread. Any parting remarks are welcome.

The Cubs did well for what they have, a good team. Pinella's pitching change was probably a huge mistake, but along with that - flat stone cold hitting killed them.

Nice to see kids on Waveland avenue.

Rhu waves to them from 1969 and says, "Sorry no home runs hit the street. Come back next year!"
