Weapon Proficiencies for C&C

Post by Maliki »

The bulk of my gaming came in 2E, using weapon proficiencies. I kind of liike the idea that a character has a limited number of weapons he knows how to use, rather than being able to use any weapon listed under his class. Has anyone tried using the weapon proficiency sytstem from 2E with C&C?

I may try this with my next campaign, any thought or ideas?

Hmm, no thoughts or ideas really to provide you with. In my games, I have a skill system that is like a basic version of skills/proficiencies in 2E. In my games, PCs can spend skills on learning weapon proficiencies / weapon mastery.

I remember, Mal, that you use a simplified feat system in your C&C games. Maybe selecting a feat could get you basic knowledge of a whole group of weapons?

Gave my .02 on Dragonsfoot.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Weapon Proficiencies were something I was glad to see the last of in 2nd Ed. Thats just my two cents.

In my opinion, the beauty of C&C is its simplicity. Bog it down with excessively restrictive rules and you start down the same path that resulted in 3.5. New classes? Fine. New magic items, monsters or deities? No prob...New limitations? Not in my campaign.

If i were to do this, I would create about 7 weapon types, loosely defined, like "crushing," "cleaving," "polearm," and whatnot, and allow most characters 2 selections. Fighters would get three or four. As the character advanced, they would get more selections.

In fact, if you want, you can look at how I did something akin to this already in ym classless character document... it does add some complexity, but I feel it also makes some sense, too. Anyway, it wouldn't have to be done that way for all characters, but it might serve a s ameans of inspiration.

I have kicked the idea around and when we were playing a more hybrid form of C&C and 2e we did use the rules as is. They didn't hurt anything and it is something I am thinking of picking back up again.
