Don't worry about that. I am a big boy and can take my lumps. I am a big supporter of all things TLG. I vote with my wallet and my time (And have given generously of both!) not my board posts.

Still, I do think the reaction was a little 'jerky', though perhaps not unwarranted. Call me to task for a transgression, OK, just don't get too cought up in bashing a poor 'peck'.

More than anything, I was shocked by the personal severity of your post, Spencer. As if I'd personally insulted your good name and family simply by linking to a site that made light of great movies (based on even better books).

No harm done, it just really caught me off guard.

Ironically, I posted it to TLG rather than DF because I view this as a less inflammatory crowd, in general.

Actually attacking some members of my family is just fine. As I said the post came off more severe than I had intended. I am a shameless LOTR nut, it is a sickness. Still..no excuse for my poorly crafted post.

I just recently discovered that only 7% of communication comes from words. So Dyne has it right. However, I am a huge Tolkein fan (heck I read TLotR and the Silmarillion once a year and have done so since I was 14), but what PJ did to the story turns my stomach more than a 3 day old shatner sandwich.

Yea, I'm pretty much the same way. I cannot watch the live-action Return of the King without wanting to either gouge my eyes out or shoot my television screen. Laugh all you want, but I actually like the hokey Rankin-Bass cartoon version better mostly because its far closer to the novel than the multi-million dollar 'epic' version.

I liked the movies, overall. Consider what a monumental task it was! There's no way he could include everything, and even if he did, it still wouldn't have pleased everybody. I'm a fan of the Rank & Bass too, though. I had a Lord of the Rings coloring book back in the 70's. Wish I still had it.

My main "book nerd" beef is with the Two Towers movie: I'm a huge fan of the Rohirrim, so I don't understand why Jackson felt the need to assign book-character names to roles that he made up. The kid who rides from the Westfold to Edoras to warn everyone that Sauruman was attacking was named Eothain. In the book, Eothain was Eomer's right-hand man and was present when the horsies confronted Legs, Gimli and Aragorn. His one line being "Who ever heard of a horse of the Mark being ridden by a dwarf?"

New character... take 30 seconds to make up a new name. Same thing with "Gamling the Old" who looked about 35 in the movie and Grimbold (or was it Hama... been a couple of years) being killed by wargs. If you want to have that stuff in there as hollywood fluff, go ahead. But make up some names while you're at it.

OK, I'm done now.

Perhaps Eothain in the Rohirrim is like John in our land.

I keep seeing that name in the Bible too but i don't blame the prophets for lacking imagination.

Maybe the boy was Eomers right hand man's first born lad?

But alas, if you look at a diamond for too long or too closely, I am sure flaws will be found.

A common trait I find in mankind is over critical armchair quarterbacking.

Until I put on camo fatigues and sleep in the desert of Iraq I will refrain from calling the shots from my air conditioned house or ever saying anything negative about soldiers. I feel the same about the first person that pooled the funds and resources on such a wonderful endeavor as live action LOTR...and doing it well! no one was stopping anyone else from doing it...'their way'

If an awesome movie like Return bothers you, and you prefer cartoons of repeating images over and over then knock yourself out. But until you can show how it is done better it is wise to just butter your popcorn and shut thy trap.

To step onto a forum like this and even hint that LOTR sucks is like stepping into the capital building and shouting Allah akbar and wondering why everyone tackled you.

I am sure if JRR was here today he would be glad they at least tried to keep it authentic. And how can you bash anyone, from turning our sacred Middle Earth known by an eclectic few into something every American child can now enjoy?

I don't agree with that at all. Creative work, especially creative work presented for public consumption is part of a three-way dialogue between the artist, the critic, and the audience. To say that because you do not control the means of production means you have NO SAY whatsoever in the product you get is absurd in the extreme.

Why complain about crappy food at a restaurant? YOU DIDN'T OR CAN'T MAKE IT.

Why bother adding house rules or offer criticism of a game system that you purchased? YOU'RE NOT A GAME DESIGNER YOU CAN'T COMPLAIN.

I'm pretty much trying to say the same thing. We have brains, opinions, and a blood-won right to free speech.

I resent the idea that I don't have a right to express my opinion because I'm "merely" a consumer or "only a civilian.*"
