I recently received my copy of the CK screens. I really liked the adventure "The Golden Familiar." I do have some issues, though...
What exactly is an Ungern? They aren't listed in the M&T or in the Yggsburgh book. Is there something else I need to get?
what is the adventure talking about when it mentions that trolls "root" to the ground? that isn't in the description in the M&T...
Thanks in advance for your help!!!

The Ungern are Aihrdian monsters. They are the spawn of Unklar, the Horned God. If you have the Codex of Erde, there's a pic in there.
And if you're interested in more detailed info, there's a good write-up in the Monsters of Aihrde PDF here:

OK...someone is going to have to explain this to me. I understand that Castle Zagyg is the default setting for C&C. Aihrde is a d20 setting. Are they related somehow? Are they two different settings or one in the same?
I don't have a lot of cash to spend on gaming. One of the reasons I liked C&C so much was that it doesn't require fortyleven books. I prefer to run premade modules and simply modify them for the party and my style. I like the Yggsburg setting and plan on using it.
Is it possible to simply replace the Horned god with another diety and replace the ungern with maybe ogres? I prefer not to use setting specific monsters too often as they complicate conversion of modules.

Actually, both Aihrde and Castle Zagyg are official settings for C&C but Aihrde is more of a 'world' setting where as Yggsburgh is focused on the city and immediate surroundings.
There will be some people who will place Yggsburgh (the CZ stuff) someplace in Aihrde but there will be just as many people who won't. In fact, there is no official word on where Yggsburgh officially fits in for that same reason.
But you can relax, if you want to substitute Ungern with something else... just make a slightly tougher Orc which has 2HD instead of 1HD -- an Ogre might be a bit too big. Replacing the Horned God is just as easy... select your biggest, bad-ass of an evil god.
Hope that helps!

No, Castle Zagyg is not the default setting for C&C. Airhde is the default setting for C&C and is currently being written/rewritten for that system. It used to be d20 when TLG first started though.
CZ and the Yggsburgh area was written by Gary to fit into the geography of ANY setting that has similar topography.
Two different settings, although Yggsburgh can be placed within the Airhde somewhere as desired.

The modules, future monster books and settings aren't 'required' to play the game, they just help busy game masters who don't have time to make their own material. The Ungern stats are in the module, not sure what else you need? ^_^
Someone posted the Ungern full write up on these boards a while back, might see if you can find that if needed?

Sure, anything is possible in an rpg. An ungern is more like a large beastal troll though. Dieties and history are mutable all over the genre.

Whew! Panic attack forestalled. I was afraid I had purchased conflicting material...Now I understand.
Thanks for the help!
Now...I like the Golden Familiar because it presents itself as an excellent home base for the PC's (and a great place for them to invest a lot of funds fixing it up, which will keep them from becoming financially untouchable by normal people). Although I haven't finished reading it yet...
I want to avoid having gods play too much of a role in my setting. I want the part to be played by "religions" instead. Personal preference.
Thus...I will need to make lots of changes to the module in order to fit it into my setting. That means more work for me...
Maybe I'll just use the map and the premise and change the story altogether!
I love C&C. Things that look soooo difficult become soooo easy with it.
