Old school famous tavern name?

Post by Dristram »

This may seem like a question out of left field, but...

Is there a tavern name that is infamous in the history of D&D? If so, what is it and why so?

The Green Dragon Inn? Hmm, was that originally from Tolkien, I'm a little fuzzy at the moment (full stomach from dinner and a goblet of wine)? In the World of Greyhawk, Sir Robilar owned it, yes?

There is a Green Dragon Inn in Yggsburgh as well.

Inn of the Welcome Wench ~ from the Village of Hommlet. Not much of a welcome town, but the weary adventurer would be welcome to a nice wench serving up some hot grub and ale, no?

First one that came to mind for me was The Green Griffon.

It was the bar that Emirikol the Chaotic was riding past while zapping and burning peeps. The pic is in the DMG drawn by Trampier.

Seconded. This was the first one I thought of. EVERYBODY had the DMG... not everybody played TVOH...

I'll second the Inn of the Last Home and the Vulgur Unicorn. When I was a kid, both of those places were like nothing I had imagined.

I still routinely cook stuff up from the recipes in Leaves from the Inn of the Last Home.

As far as pure gaming infamy goes, I'd nominate for Honorable Mention Waterdeep's The Yawning Portal, mostly on account of the shaft to Undermountain.

This thread makes me want to break out Necro's Book of Taverns!

Excellent, thanks.

Good choice, Jungger and agreeing that Tramp's stuff is great!

I can't remember, but there is a famous tavern in Waterdeep (Forgotten Realms) that has one of the best known entrances into Undermountain... That is a pretty famous D&D tavern too!

I know this is a fantasy (LotR) tavern, but don't forget "The Prancing Pony" in Bree!

A friend of mine just pointed out to me that there is also an inn called the Green Dragon in the village of Bywater just east of Hobbiton.

My Karsac GM has a pub called the Winged Pig, which sits on the corner of Arnold Lane in the capital city of Korzka.

What can I say?? There are lots of surreal references in Karsac; like the barbarians coming from the land of Barbytua with their jewelled codpieces and talking very slowly ...
