I just taught a new player!!

Post by Julian Grimm »

So, I've been itching to play lately and haven't had time nor a group. My wife and I decided to play and she suggested my 5 year old playing with us. I was leery of this and finally gave in. I ran a short session and was amazed at how well she did.

We only had two combat encounters and she did very well in dispatching the six orcs and two mountain trolls (my own design) and wanted to play again soon.

So, anyone have suggestions for running with such a young player?

AD&D per se is as dead a system as Latin is a language, while the C&C game has much the same spirit and nearly the same mechanics. --Gary Gygax 8/16/06

Just watch and listen to her. Try a little bit of many things. See which ones draw some of her interest. Then build on it.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Couple things that come to mind, and that may or may not bear relevance, as I am (currently, anyway) sans children:

1. Maximize role-play. As Steven indicated in his Crusader #7 editorial, every kid know how to do this; so take it and run with it. Run like a young boy in the fields.

2. Skip the stupid combat that's just there to build up character xp and reward moments of real drama. As several threads (contraversial as they may have been) have indicated, this is the real meat of what we're after here - and it's where the SEIGE engine and C&C shines, as opposed to a couple of other games where it's strictly about making sure that your character can beat up Jimmie's character. Nyah nyah.

That's about it for now; wack to bork. Talk soon.
