A Great New Fantasy Card Game

Happy Christmas!

I just have to plug the Adventurer card game, "Castle Deck" by K.R. Boirgoine as it is a most enjoyable and brand new offering of dungeon-like adventure for 2 to 6 (the basic set has only 4 player "Hero" cards, but you can make your own so as to expand the number).

Each Hero has four "lives" and a special ability, so playing each is somewhat different. Fellow game designer Tom Wham liked the Adventurer game so much he immediately drew up two more Hero cards, a Cleric that gained +1 against undead and could heal one lost life once in the game, and a Thief that gains +2 on dice rolls against traps.

Each card has interesting art, an encounter, and a reward in the lower portion of it. Players flip over the top card of the stock, fight the monster by rolling 2d6 or attempt to flee. A defeated monster then becomes the player's prize, as at its bottom portion the card will list some magical goodie such as a +2 short sword, a healing potion, etc.

The objective in this particular deck is to locate and defeat the vampire in whose castle the players are at large, A number of special items are necessary to have a chance of success. If the vampire count wins, the player's Hero loses a life and the vampire card is shuffled back into the remaining stock of undrawn cards.

A game lasts about half of an hour. I have played it several times now and enjoyed the game a lot. I am looking forward to both sets of expansion cards and new decks--dungeons, caves, whatever!

Got mine and will be opening it on Christmas Eve, after a festive and enjoyable Lithuanian and Swedish Christmas dinner at the in-laws. So I'll be playing the game with family whilst drinking some glogg and/or nog!

It is a sweet game and I'm looking forward to being able to spread the word on this game for Kerry in the Cleveland Ohio area, big time.

It's really fun, and a great game for both beginners, families, all the way through more hard-core card floppers. It came out great.

AFAIK the author is selling only by mail order from his website, but he is looking for distributors.

The reception of the Adevnturer game has been very good, so Bourgoine is enthused.

It is difficult to get picked up with a line of products consisting of only one title. He will be adding more products as time goes by...something very soon I believe.

My copy is hiding in a drawer waiting for Santa to grab it and give it to one of my sons. So I'm as anxious for Christmas to get here as my kids are!! Can't wait to play.

That is the first time I have seen an escutcheon of argent and or, parted per fessor any other partition, save for the Papal Arms.

I can probably find this info on the website mentioned above, but I figured why not ask people who have played.

Is this a co-op game where the players work togther to kill the vampire, or is it competitive where the players compete for the solo glory of killing the vampire?

Looks as if the KoE-KoF game will be a late spring or summer release
At least I have been promised a play-test mockup copy in time for play at this January's Winterdark convention.

Each player is om his own. Any one eliminated can take a new Hero and keep trying, though, as long as there are Hero cards available.

Yeah, even when you die, you are never completely out of the game. Because what fun is a game that you are no longer a part of? Instead what happens when you die is that you loose half your treasure cards and are then returned to full Life Points.

And more often than not, the player with the really bad luck at the beginning of the game who ends up running out of lives and dying comes back to win the game, as happened the first time I showed Gary the game.

I do have another variant of the game made called Adventurer: Dragon Game, where the party must work together rather than in competition. It uses the same mechanics, but the feel of it is completely diffferent, it feels like you are part of an adventuring party, just without the Dungeon Master.

The Dragon Game has a good chance to be the next one released of after the first 2 exspansions for the Card Game.

This game is a blast! My daughter and I played this morning while eating the Christmas cookies for breakfast!! My wife promised me she'll try it this afternoon.

Heck, I forgot a couple of things:

My daughter dominated the game big time. The monsters beat me and took my stuff and I lost 3 out of 4 traps avoidance rolls!!
She beat up monsters, collected +2 and +3 weapons and treasures, picked up armor, avoided traps and then found Count Lodrac and destroyed him!!

Also, a nice feature of the game which I didn't realize ~ you can play it solitaire/solo!

LOL, I am so sorry you lost! Little girls can be tough opponents and extremely clever players. Regardless, I am happy that you enjoyed.

As for playing solo, one variant I play with is that if you run out of lives, the game is over and you have lost. The object is to beat the vampire without "resurrections".

Another variant when playing with a group is that on each players turn they may either draw a card form the castle deck, or enter the top room in the discard pile. It adds a bit of more strategy to the play. To do this though, you have to have 2 discard piles, one where used items go and one where all the rooms and traps go. Players can only choose from the second one.

Good luck versus the wife, and don't forget, running can be a a good thing to do.

Yeah - I lost miserably to my 8-year-old. He got that +5 sword from one of the ambush cards (I rolled a 3 for the monster ) and was unstoppable the rest of the way. He was carrying around 2/3rds of the deck by the time he faced Lodrak (or Lordrak as the card says - which is it?). I then rolled a 4 for the Vamps attack and my son got a 6 or something. Great fun anyway. Looking for time to play more but I'm back at work.

Well, if it is any consolation Gary wrote to me saying that he lost his first game too, but he came back with a vengeance on his next game and claimed victory over Tom Wham, Ernie, et all.

Of course, if all else fails, you can always resort to cheating. Stack the deck so that you make sure you get the Holy Book.

Played some Adventurer a few days ago with family an friends. Its a pretty fun game that is good for family and younger card players. Not complicated at all, very fast and fun.

We played with a group of about 6 people, and played many games. From 4 players in a single game (which took about 20 minutes to play) to a bunch of 10-15 minute games with 2 players.

Very basic and fun, and hopefully there is a forthcoming expansion!
