The Lich That Stole Christmas

Post by Eisenmann »

Tonight I'll be running a Christmas C&C game that I've entitled "The Lich That Stole Christmas".

The crew that was to bring this year's Yule Log hasn't come back. And of course the PCs will go off looking for them. Instead they'll find an ancient ghost village that shows up on Christmas Eve when the moon is full. Hundreds of years ago they were wiped out by a liche who is so ancient that his entourage is made up of cro-magnon zombies.

The town's yule log too was stolen. A new Yule Log is required every several hundred years by the liche to camouflage the entrance to his underground cave complex. The Yule Log provides a cover of "goodness" that druids and priests cannot see through to his wickedness.

The liche is buying his time, working to resurrect his wife who thousands and thousands if not a hundred thousand years ago was killed by a tribe of cro-magnons. After her murder the wizard wiped out the tribe and put them under his spell and forever they serve him.

What will the heroes do?

Will they recover the ghost village's yule log so that they may rest in peace?

Will they recover their own fiefdom's yule log so that Christmas can be celebrated?

What will they do about the lich?

Just wanted to share a bit what I'm up to regarding C&C.

Thanks!

I like this concept! Sounds like a lot of fun.

Great work!

Best luck and awesomness. Once it's over, be sure to let us know how it went and how you did it.

And, whether they got the log to burn the proper number of days, and who ate the humble pie.

Does bring to mind that obligatory moment in the game where the Lich - who, with his dog Max - is about to end up losing the Yule Log at the event horizon of the Sphere of Annihilation, and then has an amazing change of heart when he gains the strength of ten liches, plus two. This, of course, allows him to yank the Log back from the verge of certain destruction so that he and Max can join up for roast beast with the PCs and the villagers.
Seriously - this sounds like a wonderful twist on one of the oldest and most striking of human stories: the blind drive to regain a love that has vanished into the mists of time. I - and I think most people here - would be very interested in finding out what the resolution comes to with this particular story. Please keep us updated.

I'd like to see this published in some form. It sounds like a good adventure for this time of year.

I once did a holiday game, though it was for Shadowrun and it was not serious at all.

The players all made up new characters, corporate security for the Renraku Arcology.

The suits running Renraku had come across information that a rival corporation, in order to steal some of the arcology's secrets, had managed to hire Santa Claus to make a data grab against Renraku while he was delivering presents to the children of the arcology. So, the characters where charged with keeping Santa and the elves out of the arcology for the duration of Christmas eve.

We had a hell of a time, with running battles against Santa's elves and a showdown against St. Nick himself. The children of the Renraku Arcology didn't get christmas that year, but the corporation's secrets where kept safe.

Sounds like it will be a great game! Hopefully our group will get some play in during the holidays as well.

Also, for anyone that's interested - H.P. Lovecraft wrote a great Christmas short story called "The Festival". He has many *best* stories however, this one does stand out and is sure to put you in that holiday spirit.
Let us know how the game turns out, Eisenmann.

Hey, that was a really cool narration of what sounds like a fun adventure. Kudos to you, well done!

We covered a lot of territory in a little over four hours. That included creating Faylorn!

I'll be running my next session the weekend after Christmas. I think I'll borrow some of your ideas here and run the party through it, it's a nicely themed adventure for the season. Party has about 7 characters of 3rd level each so I guess I can't send a Lich at them. Will have to tone it down some but otherwise the ideas in your adventure will be a lot of fun to put them through.

Cool! And thank you.
I had to play the lich as seeing the PCs as little more than nuisances to be handled by the minions as well as a bit more than absorbed by the ritual he was trying to carry out.

If I had played the lich with both barrels blazing the group would have been toast.

Oh, and let me know how it goes. I'm very interested.
