Having read the thread on Dragonsfoot and being a member of the Knights&Knaves forum as well I always wonder what all the scuffle is about. Sometimes we play C&C, sometimes OSRIC and sometimes Iron Gauntlets, it depends on who is running and what mood we want. It never makes sense when a battle rages over some game in a niche hobby. Play whatever game you like, enjoy that game, and let others play what they like and enjoy the fact that you get to sit down and play with a group of friends.

You have my condolences for falling in with the high clerics of the holy church of Ayedeendee. Hope isn't lost though, as long as you realize that theirs is not the only way to play.
As for the game that shall not be named, its legality is questionable (in my opinion, flat out illegal), and any discussion of the game that shall not be named on these forums could be seen as endorsing said game that shall not be named, thus causing the Trolls legal issues of their own. Thus, discussion of the game that shall not be named is verboten.

I am in no position to argue the legality of the "other" game at all, but I don't see someone like Phil Reed contributing to anything of questionable legality.

Just two points -
* mere discussion on a messge board will never be misconstrued as legally endorsing, promoting or (key) distributing material that may or may not be legally iffy.
* it's been more than a year and there aren't any lawsuits pending - I am a C&C fan and will proudly promote it as a great system but I will never fault or attack someone who simply doesn't like it... this is, after all, still a free country lol.
"We shall not name things..." -- sorry guys, but neither OSRIC nor 3.x nor 4.0 are Valdemort waiting to spread evil...
This thread started because Mike responded to someone's challenge that OSRIC could not be brought up on TLG boards without it being immediately locked or devolve into ugly OSRIC bashing. Peter, Serl and most seem to have a healthy and appropriate sense of humor on all this, and I think we can say the thread didn't go into automatic lock down. Now hopefully we don't drift into posts that prove we can't be civil...
Just a plea for respect for all opinions.

I've been reading web forums on gaming for about 6 years now. And I can't figure out what all the scuffling is about either? Not just on edition, but all manner of utter foolishness having to do with subjective preference.
I can state with 100% assurance that the 'scuffling' didn't start on TLG's end.
C&C was designed as a game that people could make their own, whether it be current D&D edition preferences, past D&D preferences or any range in between. Not everyone plays the same. There is no 'right' way to go about it. This is the basis for the C&C ideology.
TLG wants folks to have fun with their gaming, whatever sort that might be.
C&C was also designed to emulate a certain 'style' of play. Some folks seem to think that one can only play 'proper' sword and sorcery (whatever that means) by an exact set of rules and assumptions. Sometimes that same group of folk can get a bit ...err.. forceful about telling all and sundry what those rules and assumptions have to be.
This to the extent of well documented flaming, belittling, character assassination, and a variety of antisocial behaviors across a number of web forums.
C&C is what it is. Some folks aren't happy with it. Some are even less happy that TLG decided to stick to its guns and go with what it created. But that does not serve as an excuse for the downright nasty behavior directed at the company or its staff over the last few years. It shouldn't be a surprise that TLG wants naught to do with associating with such.
What some folks seem to forget is that its just a game, not a way of life or a social movement. The folks at TLG are not in the least bothered by how someone wants to use the C&C system when running a game. But there's a few die hard fans of a variety of rpgs and editions that seem to get a mite perturbed when someone has the audacity to change a rule here and there. Or go against some imaginary 'intent' of the creators. Or whatever sort of illogic has been used to belittle others.
There are far more important things to direct ones energy towards. Like getting Firefly and Serenity back on TV for example. It's time folks stopped wasting time wringing the last minute shade of meaning out of one phrase in a rule book and concentrate on the important things! ^_~`
What it boils down to is mainly the difference between inclusive, and exclusive.
I'd rather be inclusive myself. Diversity only makes any given game or hobby stronger.

And then we pick the alley behind Gary's house. Midnight and we brawl. Wow, I'm getting excited thinking about this. Haven't been in a gang fight in over 35 years. Feels great to punch someone with brass knuckles, but when he comes back with a sap on your noggin . . . heh]

Agreed, but unfortunately most of the actors/actresses have jobs again (those bastages!) Hopefully we'll get some direct to DVD movies someday.

Castles & Crusades...more D&D than D&D.
I only have one thing to say on this topic, I like to game. If the GM is running OSRIC, then I'll play OSRIC. If the GM is running C&C, then I'll play C&C. Heck, I'm up for just about anything as long as I have access to the PHB (or info) for the system.

Personally, while beating the tar out of the bunker buddies might be fun, it's much more fun to destroy their egos.

Hahaa. We could challenge them to a game of . . . D&D!! Good vs. evil, LOL.
Man, to be a holy avenging paladin of righteousness ~ with an upside the head mace of "what the hell did you say" and if it's something stupid, your head explodes upon contact!!
[Of course against the evil proclaimers, I'll have a nice 12" stilletto to block their sneaky dagger stabs. ]
Fagetaboutit. Did I mention that I'm skilled with throwing knives, hatchets and ninja stars? While stabbing with my foil.
Just kidding everyone.
I did sharpen my knuckles for some serious nuggies on any challengers. And for those that remember d**k the Bruiser or old time wrestling, I do know how to administer a "Purple Momma". Yeah.

I never seem to have a clue what these debates are about. I guess I don't got to enough forums. Maybe four or so on a daily basis. I used to try and look at more of them, but I got all weirded-out because everywhere I went, the two greater gods of rpgs, Serleran and Rhuvein, were already there.
However, things very seldom ever get out of hand here and I really like it. This is a place you can invite other gamers to come and share and not worry about somebody running them off. And even when threads get jacked, its for something really important like notice of a pm sent or a short discussion of bikini clad female elves that spank.
Could there be a better forum?*
*Don't answer. Rhetorical question.
