Where Is Botkinburg?

Post by BeZurKur »

The intro of A1 mentions that Botkinburg lies far from the "settled lands of the south and the fabled Kingdom of Outremere" but where on the Erde map?

Excellent question and one that comes up regularly, but one that has not been answered exactly!
Here's a quote from Davis from a while back; the answer is vague (prolly because of the discrepancies between maps):
Quote:
If you go southeast erde (pg 164 in the book) and look at the map, you see the word Dundador. Botkinburg is located about 120 miles east of here.

I personally would like to see exact placement on the Bunce map or the latest map from Peter/TLG.

I think this is a critical bit of info for the "A" series and Erde going forward!

Peter is redoing the whole area map for Aihrde and hopefully we'll be seeing more snap shots of it.

I'll get Davis over here to get you good directions. But essentially, the Blacktooth Ridge overlooks the very edges of the lands colonized by the folk of Outremere. Very much wild country and very dangerous. ITs only nomially under the control of the Empress' minions, if at all. I don't think any of the players in the books have so sworn allegiance, but Davis would have to answer that.

No. It's way east of there. And if I understand Steve's response above, it's just east of Outremere.

No. To the North/Northeast of the Outremere border area. Due east is pretty much all ocean.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Actually, that's why I'm really wanting to see the C&C book for Airhde, the new map shows land to the east as opposed to sloping northeast.

Hehe, Tree, is this "inside" info from the Trolls. Due east on my map doesn't show water!
I know east of the Blacktooth Ridge has nations of orcs, but it would be good to see further east and the "edge" of Outremere/Erde on the map!!! 8)

You remember that "bad memory" I keep commenting about?

Guess I need to actually be looking at stuff when I open my mouth. My brain ain't got the powers it used to have.

Just east of Campagna? That's about 120 miles east of Dundador, but I don't see any names of places in the Rising Knight. Clarify?

Clarification indeed! We're all waiting on it. Hopefully in the new revision of Aihrde, we'll see some more location specifics on the maps!!!
The reference by Davis was to the Codex map, page 164. I believe you're looking at the Bunce color map which doesn't exactly reconcile with the Erde map.

However, I've mentioned on several occasions here and at the old boards, that the Blacktooth Ridge/Botkinburg/Malforten is in the area called Meguinspire. So far the Trolls have not commented or corrected my assumptions. This area is the one that you can't see behind the artwork on the books and modules.

Assault on Blacktooth Ridge mentions an NPC dwarf who is from the Aneer'rafe Hills, just north of this area.

So that's all we have for now.

Check. That seems to fit most of the hints. I wish they would finish that revision. Think its worth picking up the Erde book, what with a revision coming and all?

At $10 the Erde book is still a good buy. I'm practically gnashing my teeth and threatening Arkansas with beer blockades though until the Aihrde book comes out.

Yep, I agree. The Codex is 252 pages of great stuff and the revision will be 24 pages, so the one will enhance the other!

Definitely... I *love* the book and most of the stuff is pure info which can be used regardless of the game you're playing (be it d20 or C&C). As for the small section on classes and races, if you are so inclined (and impatient like me) you could probably convert a few things to C&C until something a bit more official comes out.

I have to say I wish at least an "official" map showing Botkinburg and its environs to the rest of the world would be nice.

In my Erde the Blacktooth Ridge is now the foothills to a huge mountain chain with a nation named Sterich and a city named Istivin on the other side.

So I hope Botkinburg is on the easternmost borders of any official maps.

Did that crack smoking brother of mine, never answer this question? Dirn it all to *@#$

Outremere is in the south-eastern portion of the map, south of the Aufstrag. It is a small Kingdom attempting to rebuild the Empire of Aenoch of old. Its really just a small collection of city states and duchies who have elected an Empress. They have firm control of the coastlines and somewhat of the interior. But when you get much removed from the coast it is more wild than settled. Knights and adventurers constantly go into those regions attempting to settle them, for if they do, not only can they make their own 'settlements' but if they so choose they can be recognized by the Empress and become landed nobles. Botkinburg was founded by a group of like minded merchants/ mercenaries/adventurers and the like. It lies upon a small ridgeline due north of the settled lands of Outremere and a bit to the south east of Aufstrag. It is north of Aesperdi I believe. I'll get Peter to brush this map up quite a bit in the coming days and we'll post it here and on the webpage.

But, does that help clean locate it?

Thanks,

Steve

It is the area I'm figuring it is in, which is why I put in the needed terrain for running "Against the Giants", because as far as I can tell you guys have nothing "official" to the east of there. Other than some more mountains on the Botkinburg map Peter has done. I just "filled them in" with a lot more mountains, narrowing the gap between teh Ridge and those mountains.

Plus I am going to use Case' "Haunted Higlands" as the back drop for the kingdom due North of Botkinburg. A kingdom I added to "fit" the "Tower of Shadows" module.

Of course I wouldn't have to do all of this if someone could get around to writing the "last page" of the "A" modules and I could just stick to that.

Or someone could e-mail me some files so I can "playtest" the darn things.

But its too late now! I have decided and started lots of other things to fill in my campaign with. I have left an opening for A12 to be included later, but it looks like A3 thru A11 will have to wait for another campaign.

Thanks Steve. If you guys accept the Bunce map as being official, I can get the general area, but that map doesn't fully reconcile with the large Erde map. When looking at the Bunce map, I've always assumed the Blacktooth Ridge was east of the Aneer'rafe hills. You know, underneath the module map artwork . But according to your description, the BtR is west of the Aneer'rafe.
But yes, please let us see a fully rendered map of the Blacktooth Ridge and surrounding cities as they sit in/near Outremere.

I think this is important enough to have the exact location resolved/revealed as soon as possible!
