Rules Clarifications

Post by Ekimus »

I'm just starting up a C&C campaign and I've got questions about the rules.

It says that all gnomes have a +3 bonus to Listening checks. It also indicates a +3 modifier to Listen checks for gnome Rogues and Assassins. Is this a cumlative +6, or is the total modifier just +3? A similar issue for Elves is in question.

Familiar HD. In the Summon Familiar spell description it gives some sample stats for some familiars. THe HDs seem wrong. 2d2 for a cat, but 2d8 for a toad?! Even considering a non-familiar toad, thats a 1d8 HD toad!

THanks

Well, you can change the hit dice of the creatures if you want. However, those are actually correct, as far as I can tell.

As to your other question, you asked it on Dragonsfoot, so I'll simply repeat it here. Modifiers do not stack. Now, in your game, if you want modifiers to stack, then go ahead and do so. But by the book, they don't.

I think the 2d2 for the cat is actually wrong. Basically take the creatures base HD and double it. I would change the HD of the toad. 1d4 would be generous in my opinion. I've smashed many a toad in my life. Now there are big friggin toads in the world I would give a d8 to, but not the "standard" small toad.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Hey all, another C&C newbie here... I'm trying to find a reference to this rule in the PHB, but cannot. Can anyone point me to the place where this rule appears?

It was clarified by Davis a few months back on the old troll forums.

Gotcha... so in reference to the OP's question: "

It says that all gnomes have a +3 bonus to Listening checks. It also indicates a +3 modifier to Listen checks for gnome Rogues and Assassins."

Doesn't that make the "Rogues and Assasins" bonus redundant? Should a gnome maybe get a +4 if it's a Thief or Assassin?

Basically, I'm wondering what should happen if the 'special class bonus' is the same as the racial bonus...

Essentially, they get the bonus whether they are a member of the class or not.

Going 'BTB' then they simply would not add their level were they not a member of the class.

Gnomes are adept at listening. Gnome assassin's and thieves simply are far superior at it. They have been trained in using a natural ability, hence adding of the level.

*CLICK!* Aha! I totally get it now.

So, the 'class bonuses' listed in the race sections, are effectively treated as 'class abilities' but only available to certain races.

So, as you said, a Gnome Ranger gets +3 to listen checks, but a Gnome Assassin gets +3, +Level.

Brilliant. That makes perfect sense. THANKS!

Yes, I picked up the two 'core' C&C books a couple of months ago, and will be running it for my group at the end of August. We're going to try a short one-shot 'playtest' run to see how folks like it.

If it's a hit, I may very well be looking at starting a full campaign of it sometime...

I'm sure it will go better than the D&D 3.x game I started up a few years ago, and gave up on after six months in complete disgust...

Too many damn rules...

In that case you'll probably find it EXTREMELY liberating. Once you and your players have mastered the SIEGE engine concept (all of 5-10 minutes of gameplay) you'll be surprised how little you'll have to consult your rulebooks!

Well, I'm already sold, honestly. For the 'test' game of this session, I've made sure to invite four guys who are all playing/running in a couple different D&D campaigns together.

I'm going to be very interested to see what happens to those games after the C&C demo... I have a strong feeling that one or both may end up converting to C&C...

I flipped through it, too, reading some encounters, but since there were just a few copies available, I let other gamers take them. But from what I saw, I was impressed! This is going to be good . . .
