Converting 3e Feats

Post by Ozric »

I'm going to be trying out C&C for a game, and I think I'm going to use a simple list of 3e feats to appeal to potential players who want to feel like they have some concrete ability to customize their character. I know there are C&C players out there using feats. Do you use trees such as Cleave->Great Cleave or Point Blank Shot->Precise Shot? Do you use or ignore other requirements, such as Improved Critical requiring a +8 BAB?

For that matter, it seems that C&C has lower ability score modifiers than 3e. Does that mean bonuses and penalties for things that come from 3e should be lower in some way, or do they work as is?

Thanks!

Bonuses from d20 should, generally, be cut by half. Feats, though, don't typically give things like +10 to hit, so they should be workable, on the whole, as-is. For martially-aligned feats (ie, anything a fighter can get as their bonus feat at even levels) I would change the BAB needed so C&C martial characters can get them (ie, make them level-based requirements for warriors, and increased for non-warriors: the reason is easy - in d20, many classes get BAB +1 / level - in C&C, only one class does.) I would also cut out all the chaff - all the feats that are just replacements for others. I would simply have it be something like: at level X, this feat allows you to do Y, and at level Z, it lets you do X + Z... this cuts down the number of feats dramatically and allows you to set some good requirements and allows the ability to slow get better providing even more option (ie, the character can select other feats at appropriate levels.) To do this, though, one would want to limit the # of feats one can get - I'd suggest 1/6 levels.

I ignore chains and prereqs. The only thing I would worry about is the level at which they get them.

In fact I don't let them chose the feats, anyone can perform them with a SIEGE check, with the CL typically being the opponent against whom they are attempting to use it against. Then after "X" number of SUCCESSFUL SIEGE checks with that specific feat they are awarded the feat. I recommend X is in the 20 to 30 range if you use this method.

I can post my house rules if you want to see how I explain them and what "little touches" I have with feats.

I also use a basic feat system for my C&C games. All feats in my C&C game are "general" in that any character can pick any feat. As Treebore, I do not use feat trees or chains. However, some of my feats do have certain prerequsites, Like Power Attack for example, has a STR prereq of 13. The prereqs I use are always simple.

Yeah, a simple system is what I'm looking for. Personally I wouldn't mind just using the SIEGE engine to drive everything, but some of the people that I'd be trying to entice into a game definitely like to feel like they have choices when building their characters. I'm hoping that a relatively simple feat and skill system will be satisfying enough.

Based on everyone's advice, I think I'll go with a simple list of feats. PCs will get one feat at first level, and one every third level. None of the feats will be part of a chain and any character can pick any one of them, though some feats will have a required level and/or ability score.

Thanks, everyone!

I use the feats from True20 since they have the AOO's taken out...
Grim Tales has a nice selection setup as Talents, so I let characters choose them based on Primes. STR prime gets STR talents to choose from, but given in a sparing manner like Serleran suggests...
*Cutting most bonus in half is a good idea too.

If you think converting yourself 3e feats to C&C would be a tedious and not so easy exercise, I would suggest the following PDF (for 3$): First Edition Feats (although it is mostly combat feats)

Interesting...for $3 it certainly seems worth a look. It might be good for some ideas, if nothing else.

It's a pretty good document, but even for $3.00 I think it's a little steep in price. However, if you are having a hard time coming up with your own feats for C&C (or 1E for that matter), 1st Edition Feats is a good place to start generating ideas of your own.

If I were to go that route, I would snag the Rules Cyclopedia (or the Masters box set) and rip out the weapon mastery rules. That could make for some fine C&C-style martial feats.

True that. Very true that. The RulesCyclopedia has some neat weapon rules (like stun, deflect, death, etc, etc) that could be turned into simple combat feats. -OR- better yet, just incorporate a weapon mastery ruleset.

I suppose I probably have enough 3e material where I'd probably have no trouble coming up with a list of feats. I do have a Rules Cyclopedia and it's where I'm probably going to get my skill list from =)

Best luck! Dispite what some have said, I think feats work just fine in C&C. Especially when converting most of the feat-like actions* to simple Siege checks.
