Psionics thread
I'd really like to bring psionics into C&C, so I can start CKing all of the fun nasties we enjoyed fearing, like githyanki, mind flayers, etc.
So then, from the AD&D PHB:
Characters with one or more unmodified intelligence, wisdom, or charisma ability scores of 16 or higher might have psionic ability...

I'm in the process of adpating psionics from the Way of the Psionicist booklet which was a part of the Dark Sun Revised Campaign Setting box. I'm including all of the powers from several books (The Will and the Way, Dragon Kings, and The Complete Psionicist Handbook). I have both the Psionicist class and wild talent rules done and am a little more that half way done with the powers. When I'm finished there will be over 230 powers in my adaption.

Sounds great but .... PSI always giveessss me a head ache !
I've always like PSI in future games but I've just never gotten a good feel for it in fantasy.

Normally I agree, but I was looking through my DS stuff and just felt nastalgic for it. At some point in the future, I'd like to run another DS campaign, so it doesn't hurt to have all the work done now. Besides, someone may want to look at it.

I've always found that the big problem people have with 'psionics' is the modern-ish, pseudo-scientific name. When I have a "Mentalist" class that uses "mind magic" or whatever, my players don't bat an eye.
Ooh, nostalgia... in an old (basic) D&D game, I adapted the psionics rules and established a plot thread that I called "the Third Magic." It was treated as rare and alien, linked with unearthly abominations, and initially only one NPC practiced it. The clerics and magic-users were puzzled that this 'third magic' was so completely different from their own. One player was fascinated, and made a new character with this new class. After she'd risen many levels, she took on a few students of her own, one of whom went on to become a major villain in the campaign.
A fun time.

The way I see it, Psionics is Magic for Sci Fi. Making it available in a fantasy setting is pointless, since you already have magic and don't need to backdoor it in with a pseudo scientific explanation.

Though I have it, I can't say I'm very familiar with it. Generally speaking I despise psionics in my fantasy campaigns. With that in mind, my impressions of the book looking through it have been generally positive. For example, when you choose to create a psionic character, you essentially choose a subclass (think of it as a school of magic) such as a Telepath or a Telekineticist -- each with their own skills or powers. However I couldn't say it measures up with anything else in terms of balance.
I generally liked a lot of the Role Aids material overall and, as long as you get it at a good price, I'd go for it. With that in mind, sometime last summer, I was able to benefit from a clearance sale that Mayfair games was having for their old Role Aids line. The sale page is still up and was updated to better reflect a previous problem people had ordering from it. Keep in mind this was essentially until supplies last (the Demons set was very popular). However the 'Source & Background Set' is on sale for $15 plus shipping and handling and this is 10 source books ... one of which is the Psionics one. The rest are pretty cool too and, at the very least, can be mined for ideas. Each book is between 96 and 128 pages and designed to be compatible with AD&D. At a $15 price, it's hard to go wrong IMO.

Ah... that's a shame. I know the sale had been going on for quite some time -- even before I got around to ordering all that I did. I know you can often find a variety of Role Aids stuff on Ebay and there is always Noble Knight Games to check out. Right now, there are a couple used copies of the book in question over at NKG.
If you have any specific question regarding the book, I'll be more than happy to answer them to the best of my ability.

Im not a big fan of Psionics myself, without them, cool monsters like the Mindflayer arent around. Maybe the Mindflayer(and others) can be changed a bit, just convert their psionic powers to "magic/spell" equivalents. Whatcha think?

A reasonable alternative. Just adapt their psionic powers into "Special Abilities".
Third Edition D&D did that because their Psionic Rules were optional. The 3e MM has psionics listed as a special ability of the mind flayer, so they are "self-contained". I'll have to look at that tonight because I've always loved the mind flayers and gith races.

For a quick and dirty free version of psionics, use the mental mutations from Mutant Future. It's basically psionics, it's free to download, and it is fully compatible with old school systems like C&C.

I have "Powers of the Mind" (Psionics) as part of my Ilshara setting, with a basic system I developed for it. The "learning" times are just off and need revision to make work in a practical campaign (I did so with a PC in our home game several years ago).

I dig the idea of using old Gamma World mutations instead. Maybe the Mutant Future versions would be easy to convert to C&C…
For my part, I’ve yet to see psionics done well in the various editions of D&D. Some of the most broken rules have shown up there and I’m honestly considering banning them outright forevermore.

But mixing some Gamma World in with my D&D has never been "off the menu" as a possibility.

The Mutant Future mutations would be extremely easy to convert to C&C.
