ANOTHER Monster Thread

Post by BLOOD AXE »

This in honor of Rabindranath72 & Slimykuotoan. Im not trying to steal their thunder, I just didnt wanna clog up their thread into a 10 page list. Im not an expert, but I'l give it a shot.

Ok, lets start.

Medusa(male) Maedar

SIZE- M 6'-7'

HD-6

MOVE- 30

AC-16

SPECIAL- pass thru stone, reverse petrification, spell immunity, poison immunity, darkvision 60

SAVES-M,P

INT- High

ALIGNMENT- LE

TYPE- Monstrous humanoid

TREASURE-3

XP- 270+6/hp

Maedar are the male counterparts to the fearsome Medusa. The Maedar appears as muscular, hairless humanoid male with grey skin, usually dressed in a simple tunic. They are exemely rare, most sags are unaware of their existence.

The Maedar attack with their powerful fists and are very strong. They can reverse petrification with their touch. They are immune to petrification, poison, paralyzation, hold, and slow. They can see into the Astral & Ethereal planes. Maedar can pass thru stone at their normal move rate, they just need to concentrate 1 round before entering the stone.

Maedar provide protection & food for their Medusa mates. Once a Medusa petrifies a victim, the Maedar smashes the statue with its powerful fists ,then reverses the petrification, transforming the hapless victim into a pile of meat.

There is a excellent article on the Medusa/Maedar in Dragon magazine #106.

Hey Bloodaxe, I am not the kind of guy who does not want his "thunder" stolen Please add your monster to the other thread.

Perhaps it would be nice to have it stickied?

Im going to keep adding monsters here. Feel free to sticky, move them to another thread,use/change them, whatever. These are just my attempt at conversion. Its not perfect. I tried to simplify things, and condense it to the important parts. Some original monster entries are 2+ pages long, and I wanted things short & sweet.

Im open to suggestions if anyone wants to see a specific monster. If I have the stats, I'll give it a shot. Some of those original Ecology articles in Dragon magazine are very interesting. I have some really old issues, and the Dragon Mag. archive on DVD.

XP- 1HD=11+1/hp, 2HD=22+2hp, 3HD=45+3hp, 4HD=90+4/hp

Piercers resemble stacltites found on cave ceilings and are almost impossible to detect. They are actually a slug-like creature in a stone-like shell. The Piercer slowly climbs to the ceiling and patiently waits for prey to pass underneath. It then releases its hold and attempts to impale its target. It almost always attacks with surprise.(it gains a +2 hit) Piercers live in colonies, of usually 10+ members.

Piercers generally only get one attack each, then slowly attempt to crawl back to the ceiling. Once a Piercer has dropped it is vulnerable. Once it has fallen, the Piercer exudes an acidic substance that discourages natural predators.(1 damage to bare flesh)They can hear noises and detect heat(including body heat) within 120 yards. If the source of heat/noise is stationary(a camp site)the Piercers will slowly creep along the ceiling to an attack position. Once the colony has scored a kill, most nearby Piercers will drop to feed on the corpse, making the area very dangerous.

SAVES- P,M

TREASURE- 4

XP-130+ 4/hp

The Peryton resembles a large dark green eagle with the head of a black stag. This vicious creature inhabits mountains & hills where it makes its nest. The Peryton will attack humans at any oppurunity, as a human heart is needed for its reproduction.(the female requires a fresh heart to become fertile) Demi-humans and humanoids will still be attacked and used as food. Its attack pattern is the same as a giant Eagle. It will dive (+4 hit) and gore with its horns or it will pick-up a victim, carry him in the air & drop him. Each Peryton will pick a target and continualy attack that person until he is slain or drives the Peryton off. Sages think the Peryton originated from some other plane or dimension. First, a Peryton's shadow appears as that of a humanoid, not its own real shape. Also, a Peryton cannot be harmed by non-magical weapons, weapons of +1 or greater potency are required to hurt it.

MOVE- 5

SPECIAL- climb, 90'infravision

SAVES- P

INT- animal

ALIGNMENT- Neutral

TYPE- aberation

XP- 100 +4/hp

Tentamorts are strange dungeon predators. They consist of a round body(2' diameter) covered by a hard shell with 8 short legs with suction cups. They have two tentacles, each 10' long. One is a powerful constrictor (2-8 damage per round, Strength check -2 to break free) the other has a deadly poisonous stinger(1-4 damage+ save vs death or die in 6 rounds, extra 2-8 damage if successful).

Tentamorts are very slow moving ,but can climb walls or ceilings. They typically find a well-travelled passageway, attach themselves to a wall or ceiling & wait for prey. It has no eyes, but can sense heatinfravision) or movement. They are usually found alone or small groups, but occasionally a larger colony is encountered. They are found in dungeons or dark swamps.

If there is one potential target within range both tentacles will attack it. If there are two or more targets, the Tentamort will split its attacks. It will stop attacking if it loses a tentacle or is attacked by extreme heat or cold. If it "retreats", it will withdrawl its tentacles back into its armored shell.

A destroyed tentacle takes a week to regrow. Only destroying the body kills the creature.

A steller villain the Death Knight beith, and Formorians are probably one o' my favs as giants go.

Do you do requests?

Any chance for a Verbeeg entry?

Gygax was rather fond o' Verbeegs so I'd like to throw them in a game as a quasi tribute.
