Steve's NPR tribute to Gary Gygax

Post by Geleg »

Unless it is already found in the tribute thread, I haven't seen this link posted yet on the TLG forums. Steve Chenault did a brief interview for NPR's All Things Considered yesterday about Gary's influence. Nice job, Steve.

Thanks folks. I was a bit overwhelmed with calls and emails yesterday but felt that I had to respond them.

The folks at NPR were extremely professional and above the board, a special thanks to Melissa Block and her assistant Carol Klinger for that.

That was beautiful Steve - and well done by Melissa Block and NPR as well. I always listen to them on my commute, but this raises my level of appreciation for what they do.

On my drive home yesterday in the pouring rain, I switched to NPR on a whim, wondering if they would have something to say on Gary's passing. Interestingly, I tuned in just seconds before the piece began. So glad you spoke to them, Steve, as they are highly reputable and even-handed in their news reporting. (Despite Mr. Delver calling them National Pinko Radio. :
I admit that I cried a little as I listened.

Figured I'd piggy-back this on this thread instead of cluttering the forum with another tribute, but I saw this one today...

...and it is pretty cool.

Yeah, pretty cool article. And we thought gamers were a rare breed. I think not.

I did see this in the last day or so.

But it occurs to me that I first read about D&D/Gary in Newsweek (or Time) back in 1975/76 when I went away to college. My Dad's friend set me up for a gift sub. which was really excellent.

I've often thought to try and search/research either Newsweek/Time or the internet for that article.

I loved the mention of other games too most people fail to talk about his extensive non-RPG game collection! Gary got me hooked on "Rail Baron", "Settlers of Catan", "Puerto Rico", etc...

Many thanks Steve.

NPR has been on a 'geek'-chic kick recently.

1. Today on talk of the nation they discussed D&D: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/stor ... d=88062853

This is a 17 minute interview with Adam Rogers of Wired magazine.

2. Then, in a lighter vein, the Secretary of Education, Margaret Spellings, appeared on the show "Wait, Wait don't tell Me" on March 8. At the end, the host asked her three questions related to D&D
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/stor ... d=88000574

The D&D questions are near the end of the 11 minute segment. With some prompting she got two of three answers correct, although she clearly had barely heard of D&D and had NEVER heard (shockingly!) of The Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl.
