WorldWide GaryCon This Weekend!

Post by zacharythefirst »

This was brought up on another board as a way to honor Gary, and I think its a great idea. We've already had folks sign up on RPGnet, theRPGsite, SJ Games, ENWorld, and others! So if you plan to sling the dice this weekend, let everyone know! If you haven't in a while, dust those books off and get your game on! If you know of a board, site, or blog where you suspect there are some gamers who'd want to know about this, or perhaps hadn't played in a while, take the initiative to post it to one other website and encourage them to play! Let's make this a gaming weekend across the globe for Gary!!!
Quote:
By now most of you have seen the news about Gary Gygax.

I suggest that as a way of honoring Gary Gaygax we have a "GaryCon" across the globe this Friday and Saturday night.

By "We" - I mean every gamer possible who plays RPGs. Everywhere.

All of us play either Dungeons & Dragons this Friday and Saturday night

-OR-

We play the RPG rules system of our choice - but we do a typical D&D-type dungeon crawl. ...either Friday or Saturday night.

Everywhere....every city or town possible.

(For those that may not have books readily available, I mentioned a few free games at my blog. Feel free to add others on your own).

I like this idea, very much. I think some Lejendary Adventures or AD&D would be the ticket for me - either that or a rousing game of C&C set in Yggsburgh.

The last you mention is what we had planned on doing prior to Tuesday. It will now become a session, as a tribute to EGG.

This weekend our group will be gaming, and I'll be willing to bet there will be plenty of discussion on Gary at the table.

I am not sure what I will do... maybe something obscure. I know: I'll get everyone to play some Unhallowed and a romp with Adventurer featuring Gary's designer card.

To support this tribute and do my part I am offering Turris Lemurum, one of our Zwanzig OGL (think about it because I can't say it) titles. It is the closest to a true dungeon crawl I have made and can be run in one night. You do not need Roma Imperious to run it. Maps, plots, PCs classes and all kinds of goodies.
Free until Sunday

Respect to Gary's work and life accomplishments. He was a nice man to chat with.

I posted this on every blogging and gaming site I am a member of. My bf and I have also spread the word to all our gaming friends. We planned on gaming this Saturday anyway, and now we game in honor of Gary.

On an unrelated note, I've been trying to register here, but everytime I try, it tells me I've exceeded the number of registration attempts for this session.

Gaming is gaming. Its all good in Gary's eyes. Just put an empty chair at the table and set it up as if Gary is there. Dice, paper, a good drink, pencil, etc...

Jay, if you want, you can play in our online L5R game Saturday, using your Thursday night character, like I do.

I work in an office with a lot of current and former Military folks - who are often closet gamers, so I put up a note on the electronic BB along with the link to the article. I hope that many in our area will be a part of Gary Con. Delver and I will be celebrating out 9th anniversary this Friday night so we might participate a day early - we'll have to collect the Little PCs Saturday afternoon and might not get to game that night.

This weekend has been unofficially made into a worldwide GaryCon weekend. It is encouraged that you dust off your old favorite RPG books, bring your friends together, and enjoy a session in honor and memory of the Grandfather of RPGs, as well as the creator of Lejendary Adventure. So raise your glass of Dew in one hand and a fistful of dice in the other, and give them a good throw that would make ole EGG proud. Gary this one is for you!

This Saturday we will play in honor of Gary. Unfortunately we can only play AD&D 2nd.

But before we start to play we will make a small obsequy.

An empty chair will stand at the table and on the table in front of the empty chair will be an charactersheet, a set of dices, pencil and a good drink, and maybe a snack (does anybodyknow witch snack Gary preferred?).

We will bow our heads and we make a minute of silence. Then every player and our GM (who leads a session for the 7th time - a youngster ) will roll a D20.

At last we all will raise our mugs and bring a cheer to the wonderfull man Gary Gygax, who bring us so much fun.

Thanks breakdaddy, for the offer, but it seems I was able to create my account. I just had to wait a little while.
This Saturday a friend of mine is starting up a new D&D game, and we definitely will play in honor of Gary. Like everyone else, there will be an empty place set up for him.

I will also play this saturday.

It's a bit strange for me, as i've just bought a new home and i'm trying to move all my stuff from the old one to the new one, and meanwhile i'm working.

So the only spare time to move stuff is during weekends. Hence it's been a couple of months since I last played.

But for this weekend, I called ALL the friends of mine who have ever played, and organized a GaryCon in my new, almost finished house.

By now, 6 of them have joined the Con, and i'm waiting answer from other 10.

I have no idea of how many we'll be. Doesn't matter.

Something that matters more, perhaps, is what adventure to let them play. I wanted them to enjoy the "Bargle the wizard" thing, but I can't find it anymore, so I guess i'll have to put up a dungeon of some sort...

It seems like lots of gamers will be playing this weekend for sure. Usually every weekend we game, but this week players are coming out of the woodwork to play. As a DM I don't know how I'll handle the 14+ players!

Seems like GaryCon will be the biggest con ever.

We're playing on Sunday as usual, but I had already decided to veer from my basic campaign to run a dungeon-crawl in honor of Gary - I am lifting Mound Island from the Eastmark and dropping it into a small lake upriver from the Botkinburg area (about halfway up toward Ludensheim), and I will throw in a little treat - an NPC mage who will hook the adventurers in - we all know the one, bald with a goatee and striking eyes who jumps from plane to plane seeking unusual magic artifacts (I'll add one to the dead River King's sarcaphagus and one in the side pools).

Unfortunately I don't have the opportunity to game this weekend, but I might be playing in one next Saturday with some C&C newcomers I've met at Dragonsfoot. I'll make sure that a chair is left open for Gary then, and with less players maybe we'll have him all to ourselves.
Tonight, while the old lady is hanging out with some friends, I'm sitting here with my three-month-old son, reading the forums for Gary-related goodness (and sadness) and toasting the Father of the Game with a nice pint of Guiness. Here's to you brother!

Due to a spinal tap that a player received yesterday I will need to postpone my GaryCon game a week, but we will be picking it up next weekend, with more players than the usual C&C game.

I hope that someone starts a thread (I know we have a lot going right now) for Garycon Story Hours. I would really like to hear what people are doing out there.

Hey at least someone else will be doing a smaller GaryCon with us! I'd like to hear some stories as well.

We will be gaming later today (Saturday) and I've already asked the CK to have a spare chair either at or nearby the table. (Depends on the actual number of players attending.)

I've already planned a toast to "Absent Friends", which is appropriate since our group has already lost several players over the intervening years. However, I'd not considered making a character sheet, pencil/eraser, dice, and a refreshment a part of the "Game of Honour". I'll make that request of our CK. Should be a nice touch.

Unfortunately, our game this weekend was cancelled, due to the DM moving and having a 3 hour test. But we'll be gaming next weekend, and I'll make sure there's a chair for Gary then.
