Strange, I wrote a thesis on D&D too. Must be a nerd from the 80s thing.

That was great. I can usually laugh off any of the misconceptions except the last one. When people assume I'm a Satanist because I play D&D, well that just pisses me off. I've known plenty of Christian people who play, and even the pastor of one of my old DMs played. I just hate stereotypes like that.

I also wrote a paper on the misconcpetions of D&D back when I was in college.

The group I think he was talking about was BADD (Bothered About D&D). I had a run in with one of their members back in the early 80s. Poor woman wouldn't listen to reason, kept pointing her finger at our group and yelling that we were all going to burn in that certain place, so we promptly escorted her out of the Rec Center.

It is interesting to note that D&D has survived while all of the D&D hate groups have gone the way of the Dodo.

The author of the linked post here has done some serious homework; the arguments are sound as the dollar (Canadian), and the YouTube video fit into the same quality-set as the "Attacking the DARKNESS!" one that 3rd Eye made a link to a while back. I.e., it makes perfect fun of the sterotypes while refusing to poke ridicule at the RPG phenomenon itself.

Also, like the author, I ran into some difficulty - at university, believe it or don't - with a Psyche prof who discounted the RPG world, and its fans, as maladjusted deviant types. I was planning to do a term essay on the RPG world and the sort of gratification it provides, but the dismissive attitude put the kibosh on that right quick. Instead I ended up doing a paper about the Psyche student's favorite topic: Matricides. Everybody has fun with that one.
