Iron Man

Post by Omote »

A fun movie for sure. The special effects are fantastic, etc, etc. Overall the storyline is decent, but what puts Iron Man up there as a great comic book movie is the amazing casting choices. Robert Downey Jr. IS TONY STARK. There may have never been a better choice for an actor to take on a comic book character role. Even if Iron Man is only a OK superhero movie at best, Downey Jr. is worth watching and makes the role human, believeable and funny. Jeff Bridges plays the villain (Obidiah Stane) pretty well to and just looks like a bad guy. Gwynneth Paltrow plays more then just some dim-witted damsel in distress and as always Terrance Howard is just one of the better actors of our time (too bad he doesn't have a larger role in this movie...yet).

Iron Man is not all action from beginning to end, which will probably detract from the film a little bit, but the director (Jon Faverau) really gets into the Tony Stark character.

Plus, stay for the end after the 15 minutes of final credits. Marvel studios is really kicking things into overdrive now.

Omote Rating: 8.5 / 11.0

What's with the "8.5 out of 11"? Is the "11" a reference to Spinal Tap?

Rotten Tomatoes is 94% fresh.

They're saying this may be the best reviewed superhero movie ever.

I'm there.

Yes, in a way. Because when rating certain things, there is always that little, indefinable element that makes something better then perfect. There isn't much that goes to 11, but going with the Spinal Tap reference, my reviews do.

I'm starting to get "superhero" fatigue at the theaters, but this is definitely one of the better ones. As to be expected, it's an origin story and only makes me impatient to see the sequel.

Just got back from seeing Iron Man. WOW. Easily the best superhero movie to date (it's nearly a tie with Batman Begins), but if you stay through the credits there is a scene at the very end that will blow you away. I will definitely see this again.

Got to see this last night while on vacation in London. Theater (they call them Cinemas over here) was packed and the audience really seemed to be in to the film. I myself thought it was very well done and yes, Downey Jr. was the prefect casting choice for this role. The only thing that detracted from the film is Paltrow. Jesus is she so monotone in everything she does. But at least she doesn't ruin the film. Plus The Dude is a donus as the baddie.

Oh yeah, did i mention you can buy beer at the Movies in London? Bonus!!!!

Yeah, but it always different when you walk up to the concession stand first hand and see a fridge full of brews for purchase. Just not used to seeing that back home.

Saw this last night. I really enjoyed it! The little teaser at the end of the credits really sparked my interest. Downey did an AWESOME job playing Tony Stark.

Saw it today, loved it, best movie I've seen in months, many months. I think it's overstating it to say it is better than the Spiderman flicks, but I thinks it's in the same ballpark. Between this, Spiderman, Batman, and a Superman that didn't completely suck, I'd say we live in a golden age of comic hero movies. Well, except for the Fantastic Four and The Hulk.

During all the months that we've been leading up to this, one thing that kept me hoping for the best was how dedicated Robert Downey had been regarding making the character come to life. With this, he's succeeded beyond any hint of criticism; Tony Stark - and his entire list of character flaws, inherent to the comic series or not - is laid out for the world to see.

I will say that I was a little put out by the final scrap - seemed a little too reminicent of the pick-em-up-and-throw-em-around routine that characterized the forsaken and forgotten Robocop 2 - as I was much more anticipating the two Irons (Man and Monger) duking it out with repulsor rays aplenty. Nonetheless, it's definitely going in the collection when it hits the Blockbuster shelves, and it's majorly stoked my anticipation for Dark Knight.

To mildly disagree with Harry Joy... my main problem with the Spiderman flicks is that spiderman may be a bit moody in the comics...indeed he may be a bit "Emo" even...he is mostly a wise cracking smartass kid. Unfortunately Tobey Mcguire is like the pinnacle of emo and moody. I felt that though Sam Raimi re-defined the genre of super hero films he overly pandered to Tobey's "strengths" of crying on command and being mopey.

I just couldnt handle 6+ hours of Tobey Mcguire being all whiny, teary eyed and cry-assing, nor Mary Jane being played like a total ho that was equally teary and cry assed most of the time.

Iron Man certainly had emotion, focused on Tony Stark and his many flaws and still managed to have that recognized level of smarm and "F U" attitude that is staple Tony Stark and Iron Man. Though I am a huge fan of the new line of Batman flicks I have to join others in chiming in saying Iron Man was the best we have seen so far in super-hero flicks.

Did a great job of ret-conning the character and his history for a modern audience without turning his origins into a steaming pile of bull crap.

Robert Downy Jr. is the comeback kid. Hopefully he gets some recognition for this one. Also agreed Gwyneth Paltrow managed NOT to ruin a movie for once! Woo

I thought both X2 and Spiderman 2 were good superhero flicks. I though Batman Begins was a damn good film from beginning to end. Iron Man is right up there to be sure, but don't know if it beats out Batman Begins or X2. Maybe it's third...

Neat, huh? Yeah I liked that too. However, can they really incorporate that actor (he's in his 50's already) and that storyline into a bunch of other movies? I guess if they never made another movie that "secret" ending would be fine... I suppose.

However, Marvel Entertainment has already staked out April 29, 2010 for Iron Man 2.

Hulk (obviously) comes out in under 2 months. Thor is already in the works. Plus a few others that are a bit far off yet.

Marvel Studios Sets Four More Release Dates!

Source: Marvel Entertainment May 5, 2008

Marvel Entertainment released their first quarter report to its shareholders this morning to coincide with the announcement about the success this past weekend of Marvel Studios' first production Iron Man, which grossed an estimated $104.2 million domestically and over $201 million worldwide. The announcement included an update of Marvel Studios' feature film slate with the already-rumored Iron Man 2 announced for a release on April 30, 2010, followed by three more movies for the summers of '10 and '11. Matthew Vaughn's Thor is set for a release on June 4, 2010, and The First Avenger: Captain America (the working title) will kick off the summer of 2011 on May 6, followed by the highly-anticipated and foreshadowed The Avengers scheduled for July 2011. (Edgar Wright's Ant-Man is also listed as being in development with no release date set.)

In a conference call this morning, Marvel Studios' David Maisel said that Iron Man 2 will be used to introduce Thor. Regarding more "Hulk" movies, Maisel said "We definitely plan on continuing." He added that development continues on Spider-Man 4. "I can't give any other updates other than to say it's in development and everybody's excited about 'Spider-Man 4,'" he said.

With that in mind, one can start expecting a lot more announcements in the coming months about creative teams and casting for those movies including who might direct the Captain America and Avengers movies. (Whomever plays Steve Rogers AKA Captain America presumably will be making two movies at once.)

We go to see Iron Man today. Since Iron Man is my defacto favorite Marvel comic I expect it to be my favorite movie too.
