Show Off Your Hoard!

Post by serleran »

I thought people might like to post images of their roleplaying collection. Some will have more, some less, and some will have a wide diversification of material. For me, my stuff covers a lot, but most is D&D-related. Also, not everything I own is pictured, because some is in a safety deposit, because I don't like having it at my house. Anyway, with ado no more:

I'll be adding to it shortly, and re-arranging.

If you'd like to let us gawk and jeer, please, post images of your collection, too!

I'm such a minimalist in life, my collection is pretty pathetic, despite it being almost 25 years old. I'd take a picture and post it, but would certainly lose my geek badge!

Now you have to define "hoard".

Just RPGs or gaming in general?

Fun idea!

My stuff is a bit spread around, but I think I can put most of it together in one place for a picture. 8)

Hey Serleran, I caught you trying to sneak in the Cambridge English Dictionary! You have some real good teasures there: boxed set of DC Heroes -- classic, the 1ed of WHRP; and Cyberpunk 2020... nice! Not much 3.5 D&D, although you do have the best version of d20: Modern. Nice collection. Half my stuff is in boxes.

I don't need to post one. Mine and Ser's is so close to identical I don't need to repeat it. Just take out the Torg and heroes and add a bunch of Paladium Fantasy/RIFTS, Pendragon, Chivalry and Sorcery, Harn, etc... its close enough.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.
Sounds obvious to me! -Gm Michael

Serleran,

Beautiful collection. But one question: Do you find stacking boxed sets on their sides significantly reduces the wear and tear on them?

I'm surely not the only person here with blown-out boxed sets that have collapsed in on themselves.

I'd love to post pictures of my hoard, unfortunatly it is spread throughout the house on multiple shelves, cases, workbenches, desks, etc.

Jeez, why you gotta yell at me about my gaming stuff just like my fiance!

I find, that with most things, it depends on two factors -- durability and time. Really, with box sets, the internal strength of the actual box is the key factor, because when you stack them on top of each other, pressure is applied to the frame and cover. Something like the Wilderlands box set is very strong, but it will crack eventually, so, standing them up, like a book, removes the added pressure from the top, and puts it on the bottom. You'll get "rubbing," especially if you press boxes in tight order. This also happens if you move the box often, or those right next to it. I've had box sets "blow out" (the Time of the Dragon box set crushed in, in fact, so I had to tape the edges... this before I really had a collection so I put the tape on the outside of the box rather than the inside, to preserve the cover image), and since then, I've always stacked them like books.

My favourite box set, the Talisman 2nd Edition totally mashed upon itself...from that day on I've been standing my stuff up.

Great topic btw!

I have a digital camera, but how does one embed the pics in the message? (Assume you are speaking to a moron if you attempt to explain this to me!)

The first thing is to get the images off the camera. I can't tell you how, since that depends on what you're using. I, for example, have to run my card through my printer and use a program to strip the images from the printer's memory. You'd have a manual of some sort, probably with the camera, printer, or card reader that will explain how to get the images.

Second, you'll need a webspace to host the images because this forum does not allow (that I know of) file hosting or post attachments. I use www.photobucket.com -- create an account, and upload your stored pictures. All you have to remember for this is where you saved them on your computer, and be able to browse to them.

Once all the files are uploaded, photobucket actually provides the "code" for imagery in posts, so you can cut and paste it (its the third, or last, list of things under the picture when you're viewing it on that site.) Otherwise, you'll have to use the URL for the image, enclosed like this, with the spaces removed [ IMG ] URL of your image [ / IMG ] done once for each image, the URL changing to match the name.

For example, if you have three pictures you'd have something like [ IMG ] h t t p : //www . stuff . nothere / pictures / picture1.jpg [ / IMG ]

[ IMG ] h t t p : //www . stuff . nothere / pictures / picture2.jpg [ / IMG ]

[ IMG ] h t t p : //www . stuff . nothere / pictures / picture3.jpg [ / IMG ]

Well, here's most of my hoard. Essentially, just BA/D&D, C&C and LA! Hope the pictures are decent. It was an exercise in close shot photography with limited lighting, hehe.

Oh that's Mortisha. She's made of wax. I picked her up at a street fair some years ago. She sits in on some of our games!

It too me a while, but I finally got pics of my hoard. Here is one pic:

Since my hoard is scattered across the house (and I'm too lazy to centralize it) I took a bunch of pics. If you are interested, you can spy them here in a slideshow:

(including the pride and joy of my small miniature collection, my LOTR Easterling army )

Please explain why you have 19 copies of the D&D Rules Cyclopedia while I have none...?

Um, that's kinda a long story. But here's the short and sweet: A long, long time ago me and my buddy had a race on who could collect a certain item the fastest. My choice was the Rules Cyclopedia, and his choice was the MtG card Froce of Nature (In 1995-1996 the price was comparable) Our rules were that we couldn't spend more then $15.00 bucks on them. It was hard, but I topped out my collection at 27 copies of the RC (he had like 40+ Force of Nature cards). I essentially stopped because it became too expensive and I was really interested with reselling my collection FOR CASH! At the time we both ran a game store and were OOP dealers, so it was easier for us to come accross these things.

What you see there is what I've kept over the years and now I won;t get a copy of RC unless it is in NM+ condition and for under $10.00. This has been a tough challege.

Heh, of course, a writer would notice, so not sad, but observant.
I have several other "How to write" type books. Helpful and interesting, I've enjoyed reading most of them.
