Vista Service Pack 1

Post by Relaxo »

I got the update notice that it's time for SP1 for vista.

I've been running auto update since getting this machine, so I wonder if I still should bother with the SP?

Any advice (other than get a mac, which I can't afford)?

Thanks in advance!!!!

Linux.
Just kidding! Usually the SP's are just a collection of previous updates (although they may add to the SP). You should be able to go to Micro$oft's website and look at the documentation for the SP; the included updates may be listed there.

Service Pack 1 has a lot of data in is not automatically updated via the usual methods. I installed the service pack a few weeks back and haven't noticed any problems.

Download and install SP1. It includes a lot of fixes and updates that are not included in the regular updates you get through Windows Update.

I did the whole SP1 Beta thing for months, and found out right off the bat that it most certainly fixed some issues I was having. Those issues were fixed via regular updates. SP1 is what addresses them. So yeah, it's something you need, and will appreciate if you've had any issues.

Heard it makes Vista much more stable, where it should have been upon release.

Oh yeah, and get a Mac on your next computer purchase (OSX may be the suxorz by then, who knows).

Macs actually run a version of Xnix - they stopped being their own OS about a decade ago.

Otherwise, I can't say what to do with Vista - I'm still in the camp of buy the PC for the hardware and "downgrade" it to Windows 2000. :)

That was one huge upgrade! Took just over an hour to download and then install. IT seemed to "bug" when it shut down twice, so I had to make it finish shutting down and manually restart it, both times.

I don't know about the stability issues. As far as I know I never did anything related to that. WoW worked, my browsers worked, my favorite games worked, so as far as I know the stability issues have never been an issue for me.

Now the browser does seem to transition a bit more smoothly between sites since the install, so maybe it helped with an issue there.

Bleh. Windows Explorer saw me saying nice things about Vista and decided it had been making things too easy on me. Been crashing off and on the last hour+. Thought I'd caught a bug at first, but I've run two AVs.

Man, I love Windows. Keep ya on your toes.

Get Firefox. Once I got used to it I hate IE.

Not Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer. It's how your desktop works. FF goes without saying.

Yeah, Tree, try this and see what happens so you'll know exactly what Windows Explorer is....

Press Ctrl Alt Del on your keyboard and then go to Task Manager. On Processes, find the one called explorer.exe. Right click and select End Task. Watch as your system seems to suddenly crash. If you are lucky, it will reload on its own and you'll get your desktop back - otherwise, in Task Manager, click File and then Run. Type explorer (and then click OK) to get it back.

Internet Explorer is similar - it would be called iexplore.exe. There are some neat tricks you can do with that from the Run box.

I'll just take your word for it.

Glad I'm not the only "Luddite" here--I went to XP kicking and screaming the entire way, since my Adobe CS3 software requires it. I do miss my old Windows.
