Eldritch?
Anyone check out this system by Goodman Games? Any thoughts on the system?

I have it. I like it. Haven't played it yet. They have a quickstart that will give you a good feel for it. Dan Cross writes great material.

Very interesting. Thanks for the link. Of course, I know Dan (virtually) from the old LA forums and the Gygaxian Fantasy Series - so I'll have to give this a thorough read.
Thanks.

Hmmm. Just a quick read through. Seems a little bit overly complicated, but some interesting ideas that I will definitely have to give a thorough read to later.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I was excited about this game, but it is does seem overly complicated and the base rules mechanic is not easy to pick up from a simple read. It seems like there should be more to this game. The core rulebook does not seem to cover "enough." Don't get me wrong, you can run a game right out of the core book, but... IDK, seems like there is something lacking.

Definitely give it a good read. Although the book is pretty poorly written, with lots of errors (think 1st printing C&C x 10!), the game system is really fun--kind of a mixture of Lejendary Adventure and Savage Worlds. It really needs a Monster Manual (although creatures are pretty easy to work up). I understand one is planned.

Oh, please--I have dice older than you are.
Note: This is one big edit to correct a post I made some time ago that I feel was a little unfair.
Having some free time on my hands, I decided to dig through Eldritch a little more and it's not nearly so complicated as it first appeared. In fact, it's pretty darn simple. The confusion comes from the fact that the book (I own the pdf, not the printed version) is not put together as well as it could be though I don't think it's nearly so bad as some make it sound. You just have some things that are mentioned a little too early and a few more examples would have been nice.
All in all it's a pretty neat little package. It suffers from not having a fleshed out setting (no biggie to me as I use a home-brew anyway) and, more importantly, not having even a small creature book.
Now, on to the plus side...it's a fast paced and compact skill based rpg that removes some of the headaches of your typical class based system (to multiclass or not for example).
Everything is based on die types (and I do mean everything). You have no attributes per say and the only "stats" that are tracked are those things that are a must (reflexes, agility, resistance and endurance). And even these work just like the skill system, the bigger the die the better you are (you can also specialize or master just about anything, which allows you to add more dice and make them larger as well).
This gives players a lot of control over their characters without breaking the game. A character can be as strong or intelligent as the player wishes since neither has any rules bearing on combat, casting, skills, etc (these things being handled by the melee and arcanum skills).
I'm a big fan of having both a class based game (which will always be C&C for me) and a skill based game at hand and I think Eldritch will be my new skill based game of choice.
So just wanted to man up and correct my earlier post born of ignorance and slightly sub-par book composition.

I'm not all that familiar with Savage Worlds but I've seen several people say it's similar though combat is faster and the skill system is a little smoother (but that's second hand).
Dan Cross had this to say over at the Eldritch forum:
"Sure, Eldritch, like Savage Worlds uses the ascending ranking according to polyhedral dice, which is found in other games as well (Earthdawn, Sovereign Stone, etc). Why a new system? I believe my character creation and action system, as well as the "layered defense" combat lend themselves to a different "feel" in play. It's difficult to explain further without demonstrating (which is why I'm getting that Quickstart out ASAP)."

I think it's a wonderful game. I actually took the 45 minute drive in traffic just to pick it up. Much like LA, it took me a few reads to "get it". Although the game itself is darn awsome, the book could use a reviion. A lot of thick, empty margins (think 1/3 the page or so) which could have been used for more examples and explinations. All in all, though, the game rocks.

I'm told a pdf revision is in the works, along with a creature book of some sorts but I've no idea how far away those are. A small pdf detailing traps is due out this month according to the website.
Yep, slow going with the revision, but I'm keeping the FAQ file up-to-date in the mean time. There will be a bestiary series of articles soon, and an article on traps is available this month.
The quickstart was updated for Goodman Games since the first release through Silven Publishing.

Wow, I forgot about this thread. Well, the revision is here folks, and I am praying it funds: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/eld ... ed-edition
