Special Notes:
For the first session, Treebore played Joe due to nwelte1s unavailability.
SPOILER WARNING - This campaign log will detail the party's adventures in Castle Zagyg. Anyone who doesn't want to know what's inside the Castle and its environs should stop reading.
After getting everyone up and running using SKYPE and MapTool, the party convened at the Outs Inn in Yggsburgh for the purpose of embarking on a long-anticipated dungeon-crawl through Castle Zagyg. The bulk of the Castle is currently enshrouded in a cursed fog, but various cave entrances in the bluff below the Castle have been exposed. The party intends to explore these so-called Mouths of Madness.
Due to some irregularities in the maps of the East Mark region in which the Castle resides (or perhaps due to some dread enchantment of the Mad Archmage Zagyg), the precise distance between Yggsburgh and the Castle is unclear. It was clear, however, that traveling between Yggsburgh and the Castle would take up most of the day if the party traveled round-trip. The party decided to set up a base of operations in the Thorpe of Edgewood, located some 7-8 miles west of the Castle at the edge of the Wychwood Forest. A local farmer allowed the party to sleep in his barn for the low-low price of one gold piece for two nights.
So, the following morning the party set out bright and early for the Castle. The Castle itself is located in the Little Hillwood. When the party started down the Old Castle Track that winds through the Little Hillwood to the Castle, they immediately became uneasy. The Little Hillwood is an extremely dense forest inhabited by Crom-knows-what. The party could feel murderous eyes upon it as it progressed down the trail. Eventually, Lomea became so overcome with fear that he refused to continue and turned back on his own. The party was able (via a successful Charisma SIEGE check) to persuade him to continue with the adventure.
The party was on the verge of reaching the Castle when it was ambushed by two enormous bugbears. A vicious combat ensued in which Thalion was largely eaten before the monsters were defeated. The party had enough magic to restore Thalion to consciousness, but their healing resources were depleted. Rather than risk further injury at the Castle, the party returned to Edgewood to recover.
The party set out again two days later. This time two PCs were unmanned by the disturbing nature of the Little Hillwood, but this time the Paladin convinced them to proceed. Thus, the party reached the infamous Castle Zagyg.
The Old Castle Track leads to the entrance to the Castles Gatehouse. The Gatehouse stands before a ravine lying between it and the Castle proper. The Castle itself is built on an enormous bluff, sloping upward to the west. A drawbridge presumably spans the ravine between the Gatehouse and the Castle, but the party could not tell due to the fog enshrouding the Castle and Gatehouse. However, upon looking into the ravine, the party spied several cave mouths in the west wall of the bluff.
The party elected to explore the first cave to the south of the Gatehouse. Thalion and Scar lowered themselves into the ravine and positioned themselves on opposite sides of the cave mouth. Thalion looked inside quickly and was able to see into the cave deeply enough to detect an intersection a few yards into the cave, but the lack of light sources left much in darkness. As Thalion pulled back, he heard a voice yell from inside the cave that he should leave or he would be killed, killed, killed! Scar decided to take a peek as well. The halflings infravision allowed him to look deeper into the cave and he spied two goblin guards staring back at him from the far side of the intersection. The goblins again demanded that the party depart or face death, death, death. Scar replied by shooting one of the goblins with his bow, killing it.
Scar and Thalion waited outside the cave as the rest of the party descended into the ravine, then the party entered the cave complex and killed the remaining goblin guard. Kaldor made the difficult decision to leave his trusty steed atop the ravine while he adventured. Lomeas friend the Wolf agreed to follow Lomea inside, but the Wolf was not happy about it.
After dispatching the remaining guard, the party was attacked from the north by two waves of goblins. Much valor was displayed as Scar killed two more goblins with two more shots from his bow. Two PCs were also struck in the back by friendly fire when PCs decided to fire into melee combat with missile weapons. The destruction of the second wave of goblins was greatly aided by a timely sleep spell cast by Joe.
As the party began to explore a room to the north of the room from which the goblin hordes had come, a third wave of goblins surprised the party from the south. These goblins were quickly dispatched, although one goblin escaped through a door to the south.
Thalion was unable to hear anything through this southern door, so he opened it while his companions prepared to fire arrows at anything on the other side. The door revealed a corridor turning to the east rather than more opponents. Scar proceeded down the corridor to the turn to see what lay beyond. Unfortunately, he did not make it that far due to an unexpected pit trap. Scar fell ten feet and was knocked unconscious. The party used its remaining healing magic to revive the halfling, then decided to stop for the day.
After much debate, the party decided to barricade the southern door with the bodies of the fallen goblins. First, though, the party arranged the goblins javelins at the north edge of the pit to prevent anyone from trying to jump across. The party also decapitated several of the goblin corpses and placed the heads on upright javelins behind their spike trap to the north of the pit. The party then retreated to the north room where it spiked the door shut for security and set watch. The party hopes to survive undisturbed through the night to regain spells and heal some of its remaining damage. Most of the party was unhurt, but Scar had 6/8 hit points and Hobb had 6/9. How many hit points Kaldors horse will have after a night alone in the Little Hillwood without protection remains to be seen
Some Thoughts:
1. Rerolling initiative every round using SKYPE and 7 PCs slows things down considerably. We switched to rolling initiative once per encounter early in the session.
2. As a GM, it is extremely difficult to follow player actions on SKYPE when the player says, I do X since it is impossible to recognize voices. We found a combination of chat messaging and verbal responses to be fairly effective by the end of the session.
3. It sometimes took the players a long time to reach a consensus on how to proceed. This was probably exacerbated by playing over SKYPE rather than face-to-face. For example, the party spent close to 30 minutes deciding whether to camp overnight in the cave rather than head back to Edgewood. The party may want to consider electing a party leader at some point to speed up the decision-making process. The leader position could be rotated regularly so everyone has a voice.

Session 2 - July 20, 2008
The Players:
Treebore Kaldor, Human 1st level Knight
Lord Seurek Kysztof, Human 1st level Paladin
Galadrin Hobb, Human 1st level Cleric
Seskis Scar, Halfling Level 1/1 Fighter-Thief
Luther Thalion, Human Level 1/1 Assassin-Illusionist
Nwelte1 Merick aka Joe, Elf 1st level Wizard
Aramis Lomea, Elf Level 1/1 Ranger/Druid
NPCs:
Wolf, a wolf companion of Lomea attached to the party via an animal friendship spell
At the end of Session 1, the party barricaded itself in a room in the goblin tunnels. In the middle of the night, Wolf became agitated and the guards on duty began to hear noises on the other side of the door. The entire party was wakened and listened at the door. The party heard a variety of noises which turned out to be goblins piling timber against the door and lighting it on fire!
As smoke began to pour under the door, party removed the spikes from under the door and opened it. A small bonfire tumbled into the room along with 3 javelins which narrowly missed Thalion and clattered against the back wall. Thalion, in an effort to deceive the goblins, dropped to the ground and pretended to be dying.
As the fire began to die down from being scattered, the party prepared to charge through the door. However, at the last minute they discovered that the goblins had moved the javelin trap that the party had set behind the pit trap and positioned the javelins so that they were now on the other side of the bonfire facing the party. Kaldor braved the flames and began to clear the javelin trap so that the party could advance.
A well-timed sleep spell from Merick (formerly known as Joe) allowed the party to safely dispatch the 8 goblin warriors who mounted the assault on the partys resting place. No sooner were the goblins killed than a voice called out from behind the door to the south telling the party in broken Common to get out or the party would be killed, killed, killed.
Although the party was unimpressed by this threat, Wolf seized the opportunity to flee the caves and abandon his friend Lomea. Lomea chased after Wolf in shock, but was unable to catch or persuade Wolf to join him in a life of adventure and danger underground.
The rest of the party proceeded to the door to the south of the intersection (the cave entrance is due west of the intersection) and Thalion bravely swung the door open. Two javelins flew out at him, but missed. Thalion the peered around the corner, saw three goblins, and cast Darkness behind them, plunging everything south of the door into darkness. Kaldor or Hobb (the lowly CK no longer recalls which) lobbed a barrel filled with a goblin corpse through the doorway. His display of great strength was rewarded when he heard the crunch of a goblin meeting barrellish death followed by a thud as the pit trap opened back up, sending the crushed goblin to extra doom.
A goblin sprung out of the darkness to attack Kaldor, but was easily dispatched by a sneak attack from the assassin. As nothing more came through the door, Thalion released his Darkness spell, exposing two goblins probing the walls next to the pit trap as well as larger goblin to the south.
The party defeated the two goblins stuck on the north side of the pit trap, but the larger goblin escaped around the corner to the south.
Hobb was down to 1 hit point at this point and the party eventually displayed compassion toward him and decided to head back to town to rest, heal, and regain spells. Although the Old Castle Track can be perilous at night, the partys travel was uneventful except for encountering two starving, dehydrated bears mating in the middle of the road. The party eased its way around and spent the next several days recuperating in Edgewood.
When the party returned, it entered the goblins cave complex again. This time, it encountered no resistance as it made its way south and east through the tunnels. The party faced a deathly quiet as it made its way through the crypt-like tunnels. Two rooms of note were encountered. One room was locked and the partys rogue (definitely undeserving of the proud accolade thief) failed to pick the lock, but the partys assassin, untrained in such trickery, managed to open the door. The second room was discovered when Lomea detected a secret door further down the hallway. The party passed through the goblin-sized door and found what appeared to be recent excavation and mining activity. Unfortunately, no jewels or valuable minerals were discovered by the party.
The session ended with the party debating where to proceed next. No effort has yet been made to search for Kaldors poor horse, left defenseless outside the caves while the party entered the goblin complex in Session 1. Did the brave steed escape certain death in the Castle Environs or has it perhaps become part of a spidergoats larder? Only time will tell
Notes/Thoughts:
1. With 7 PCs, its difficult to keep everyone involved. The Mouths of Madness module was designed for 4-6 PCs of 1st to 3rd level. I think I need to up the challenge level to keep things interesting. Attacks from the rear would also help as it would activate PCs unable to engage in front line combat due to lack of room.
2. Things are proceeding relatively slowly due to not playing face to face. The party has not acquired many experience points yet. Red shirt goblins do not get a party to second level quickly, especially not multiclassed PCs. The party will need to find extra sources of experience or I will have to throw more monsters at them per encounter. Since I think I need to beef things up anyway, the extra XPs should be a nice secondary benefit.

Heh - I was waiting for the monsters from behind - that's why I went out and looked at the cave entrance behind us while the battle was going on down the hall!

We last left the party exploring the seemingly-empty goblin caves. They had just located a secret mine that unfortunately did not appear to actually have valuable minerals in it.
With the resumption of play, the party proceeded further into the complex. Scar scouted ahead to a T intersection. Sticking his head around the corner, he was face to face with 8 goblin skeletons. All of them appeared fresh with bits of flesh and sinew dangling from their bones. A vicious battle ensued, at least on the PCs parts. The skeletons couldnt hit the air if they tried and the party made quick work of them.
Past the skeletons, the party discovered a makeshift jail with several prisoners manacled to the cave walls inside. The rogue was unable to pick the lock to the jail, so the party threw some rations to the prisoners and promised to come back. The half-starved prisoners were not amused.
The party explored further, eventually entering the quarters of the goblin shaman. The party took particular note of a statuette of a goblin deity. Hobb decided to destroy the fell relic and struck it with his mace. While the statuette was destroyed, Hobb found himself paralyzed.
The party decided now was a good time to head back to town. On the way out of the caves, the party made another attempt to free the prisoners. This time they managed to break through the bars of the prison and eventually freed the captives by using javelins to cut away at the stone walls where the chains were bolted. Doing so freed a couple amorous hobbits, a human lad, a dwarf, and a human merchant who offered significant rewards if the party escorts him safely to Yggsburgh. Two humanoids were also chained up in the jail. Merick executed a female goblin prisoner by jamming a dart through her neck when she failed to answer his questions productively. An elderly orc disclosed the existence of a silver mine in a cave on the north side of the Castle bluff before becoming rude and getting a swift execution as a reward.
The party made it back to the cave entrance before all hell broke loose. The party discovered why the goblin caves were deserted the remaining warriors set an ambush at the cave entrance. The goblin chieftain, a goblin shaman, a serjeant, and 4 goblin warriors were arrayed at the top of ravine opposite the entrance. As the party started to emerge from the caves, the goblins rained down javelins and the shaman cast a spell that froze Kaldor in place. A long battle ensued in which each party member proved vital.
Lomea cast entangle which caused the grass above the ravine to tie up the goblins intermittently through most of the fight. Thalion used and influence spell to convince the goblin chieftain to stand by idly throughout most of the battle. Merick disabled several of the goblins with a sleep spell. When the sleeping goblins awoke, he cast darkness on the top of the ravine which effectively shut down the missile fire. The goblin chieftain became frustrated with the darkness and attempted to jump from the top of the ravine onto the now-moving Kaldor and Krysztof who were attempting to use javelins to build a ladder up the ravine wall. The chieftain missed and was badly injured by the fall. In the ensuing melee the Chieftain almost killed Krysztof before he was slain by Kaldor. The chieftain may have defeated both warriors, but Merick distracted him with a dancing lights spell. Scar was all over the place during the fight, initially firing arrows at the goblins before climbing the ravine walls and attacking the goblins in melee combat. He was knocked unconscious during this combat. Lomea also climbed up the ravine and fired missiles at the two surviving goblin warriors until they charged him. Lomea ran off toward the woods surrounding the Castle while the goblins, seeing that their leaders had been slain, themselves fled to the north.
At the end of the battle, Scar, Krysztof, the dwarf prisoner, and the human lad prisoner were all unconscious and wounded badly. Hobb was still paralyzed. Thalion was down to one hit point and Kaldor was down to 6. The party must decide whether and how to return to town in their heavily damaged state.
Thoughts:
1. I think the beefed up encounters worked well in terms of getting everyone involved. The skeletons proved worthless due to incredibly bad monster to-hit rolls. The goblins also rolled poorly to hit, but when they did, the damage rolls were vicious.
2. Making a list of the party members initiative rolls at the start of combat speeded things up enormously. Previously, I would call out each round for everyone who got better than a 10 to tell me take their actions, then 9s, then 8s, etc.

Session Campaign Log
Session 4 September 14, 2008
The Players:
Treebore Kaldor, Human 1st level Knight
Lord Seurek Kysztof, Human 1st level Paladin
Galadrin Hobb, Human 1st level Cleric
Seskis Scar, Halfling Level 1/1 Fighter-Thief
Luther Thalion, Human Level 1/1 Assassin-Illusionist
Aramis Lomea, Elf Level 1/1 Ranger/Druid
nwelte1 dropped out of the campaign and Treebore played Merick, the 1st level Elf Wizard in nwelte1s place
At the end of the last session, the party narrowly survived an ambush by the remaining goblins. Several PCs and half of the rescued prisoners were unconscious or paralyzed. Since there were not enough able-bodied PCs and NPCs to drag the immobile characters back to town, the party retreated into the secret mine entrance inside the goblin tunnels and spent 2 days healing up by means of natural rest and goodberries from Lomea. After 2 days everyone was at least mobile except for Hobb, who remained paralyzed (but alive thanks to goodberries crammed down his throat).
The party reached Yggsburgh with little difficulty (one poisonous snake was encountered and slain along the way). After a few days in town spent recuperating and shopping, the party headed back to the Castle. Note that the party could not afford the 250 gp cost to have Hobbs paralysis cured. His temple healed him, but the price he will have to pay for the cure is yet to be seen.
Oni Blackbeard, the dwarven fighter rescued by the party, pledged to serve the party for one year in exchange for equipment, room, and board.
The party returned to goblin caves and resumed their exploration. The party encountered a goblin temple including a statue of Gubeezablu, the goblin devil of power and cunning. Fearing another paralysis, the party left this evil relic alone and searched the temple. Their efforts were rewarded as they found a secret door leading to a series of natural caverns.
The first cavern was largely filled by a dark and deep pool. Scar was attacked and almost eaten by a grey ooze on the northern edge of the pool. He was fortunate to escape with everything but his armor and a few hit points. After a fellow party member lent him a cloak, Scar explored the rim of the pool and discovered a ring which, when he put it on, rendered him invisible! The party was initially alarmed by his disappearance, but he reappeared after removing the ring.
Thalion bravely shed his clothing and dived into the pool. He, too, was rewarded when he discovered a tunnel leading downward at the bottom of the pool. He swam down the tunnel until he was nearly 40 feet below and discovered a passage leading up to a new subterranean cavern. There was a large pocket of air in the new cavern, along with a rusted iron door.
The rest of the party eventually followed Thalion down the underwater tunnels and emerged in the secret cave, dragging their belongings behind them on ropes. The party managed to shove the rusted iron door open and discovered a tunnel leading downward into fog.
The party swam back to the upper caverns and continued their exploration. In a cave to the south they discovered a gnoll corpse wearing banded armor and sporting green slime in its eye sockets. The party doused the corpse in oil and set it on fire, killing the green slime as well as the gnolls armor.
The party finally explored a third cavern that contained a nest of poisonous giant centipedes. In addition to being able to swim, the centipedes apparently also knew how to sleep as Mericks sleep spell effectively knocked them out. After executing the dozing creatures, the party called an end to the play session.
At the end of play everyone was conscious and unparalyzed, so the session was a marked improvement over session 3. Party members received 145 xp each (Oni took a one-half share of 73). Oni has 10/18 hit points left. The party has yet to decide who will keep the magic ring.

Session Campaign Log
Session 5 September 28, 2008
The Players:
Treebore Kaldor, Human 1st level Knight
Lord Seurek Kysztof, Human 1st level Paladin
Galadrin Hobb, Human 1st level Cleric
Seskis Scar, Halfling Level 1/1 Fighter-Thief
Luther Thalion, Human Level 1/1 Assassin-Illusionist
Aramis Lomea, Elf Level 1/1 Fighter/Cleric
Meleeguy Merick, Elf Level 1 Wizard
Meleeguy joined the campaign and took over Merick since nwelte1 had to drop out.
Between sessions, Aramis decided Lomeas character concept wasnt fitting the dungeon well and we switched him to fighter/cleric. Lomeas XPs carry over to the new incarnation.
Oni Blackbeard, a 2nd level dwarf fighter, continues to adventure with the party in gratitude for the party rescuing him from the goblins. After much inspection, the party confirmed that he is wearing scale armor.
The session started with some debate as to whether to go back to town or keep exploring. The party decided to return to the goblin caves and finish exploring them. On the way past the temple, Hobb decided to smash the statute of the goblin deity. He was not paralyzed this time, but who knows what evil consequences may lie in store for the cleric?
The party looted the shamans chambers, collecting various silks and tapestries, then explored the last room in the complex. It appeared to be a throne room for the goblin king (now dead). Lomea discovered a secret compartment in the dais below the goblin kings throne. The party found substantial coinage and precious stones inside. The party looted the throne room and then moved all of the treasure recovered into the secret mine for safekeeping. The party also made another attempt to open the secret door between the shamans chambers and the throne room. Smashing the door with mining tools and a morning star just broke the implements with no harm to the door. Oni suggested there was something unnatural with the stone door.
The party then returned to the watery caverns, temporarily forgetting the Halfling was running around in a cloak. This decision proved deadly as the party moved into the western cavern and was attacked by rats. While most of the party fought the rats, Skar decided to check out the exit from the watery caverns to the ravines. In a horrible coincidence, a badly burned owlbear (Pinky) walked by at the same time. Pinky looked at Skar. Skar ran away. Pinky started to screech and chased after Skar into the caves. Oni intercepted the owlbear and tried to protect the Hobbit, but was quickly reduced to negative hit points.
With melee going on with the rats in the western cave and between Skar and Pinky in the central cave, things began to look grim. Pinky ate a good chunk of Skars juicy Hobbit flesh and knocked him unconscious. Although the party was having great success against the rats, a huge snapping turtle lunged out of the pool at the center of the western cave and went after Merick. Merick responded with a sleep spell which unfortunately did not affect the turtle, but did knock out the rats and half of the party, including Merick. The turtle viciously bit into Mericks sleeping body and killed him instantly, then dragged the elf into the pool for supper.
Meanwhile, Kaldor rushed to Skars aid, landing a cruel blow to Pinkys back. Pinky had enough and attempted to run away, but was cut down as she tried to escape.
After dispatching the sleeping rats, the party gathered its loot from the secret mine, bid a fond farewell to the wizard, and headed back to town to cash in and resupply.
On their way back to the Castle, the party encountered a cute black bear cub. While most of the party elected to freeze, Skar offered it some cheese. When Baby Bear walked up to get the cheese, Skar threw it away. This upset Baby Bear, which in turn upset Mama Bear who decided it would be a good idea to eat Hobb. After a short, painful battle, Mama and Baby Bear were left alongside the road as the party returned to the Castle.
The party elected to try one of the caves to the north of the gatehouse this time. Strangely, a cow bell tied to a string dangled outside the entrance to the cave. The party decided to take a stealth approach rather than ring the bell. Skar entered the horribly smelly cavern with the magic ring he found last session. He vanished when he put it on and remained unhidden until he removed it a couple minutes later to report he did not find anything except a side cavern that smelled like a latrine and a tunnel leading further in. Skar put the ring back on when he reentered the cave, but nothing happened. The ring appears to have intermittent effects. Several party members accompanied Skar as he ventured down the tunnel. Just as Skar saw the tunnel opening into a larger cavern, an angry voice shouted from ahead that the party better leave the cave and to ring the bell next time if they wanted tea and jam. Daunted, the party started to back out of the cave, but someone rang the bell before they got out.
This prompted a large, dimwitted ogre named Charlie to start down the tunnel. When he saw the intruders were still inside his home, he became enraged and attacked. Oni held off the ogre while the rest of the party escaped, sustaining grave injuries in the process. Oni then ran outside and joined the others. Although Charlie gave chase and a brief melee ensued at the entrance to Charlies caves, the party convinced Charlie it was sorry and things calmed down. Charlie invited the party in for tea and jam and several adventurers went inside.
While the party never got any jam, Charlie did offer some fresh, cold tea and told them about the time Pinky bit him. He also told the party that his smart friends lived in the next set of caves to the north. Charlie decided to take a nap before the party could get more information out of him.
The session ended as the party left Charlies home. They will need to decide which cave to enter next.
All PCs were at full hit points at the end of the session except Hobb who had 6/9 and Merick who was slowly being digested inside a turtle. Oni had 6/16 hit points.

Hee hee - to be fair I was merely tossing the cheese for the baby bear to fetch, much as I do with my dog when I give him a snack at home... guess baby bear didn't quite get the concept of fetch...

Session 6 October 12, 2008
The Players:
Treebore Kaldor, Human 1st level Knight
Lord Seurek Kysztof, Human 1st level Paladin
Galadrin Hobb, Human 1st level Cleric
Seskis Scar, Halfling Level 1/1 Fighter-Thief
Luther Thalion, Human Level 1/1 Assassin-Illusionist
Aramis Lomea, Elf Level 1/1 Fighter/Cleric
Seskis filled in as Thalion and Treebore filled in as Lomea for the night due to player unavailability.
Oni Blackbeard, a dwarven fighter, continued to adventure with the party as an NPC.
The party began the session outside Charlies cave and decided to find Charlies friends to the north and presumably kill them. After a short march, they encountered another cave on the west face of the Castle bluff. The cave entrance was largely blocked by piled rocks with a small tunnel leading through the debris. The party started to clear away the rocks while Scar looked inside with his infravision. He discovered 2 kobolds who began blowing darts at him. Fortunately for the party, the kobolds aim was as rotten as their breath. After enduring several volleys of darts, the party decided to explore further north in hopes of finding an alternate entrance to the kobolds lair.
The party reached the northwest corner of the Castle bluff and turned east. The ravine was filled with trees in this area. The partys view was somewhat obstructed, but they could see two humans approaching. The party was unable to reach a firm plan on how to handle the situation before the humans emerged from the woods. To the partys surprise, there were in fact 7 men, not 2, the rest having been camouflaged by the trees.
The party greeted the men and a brief parley ensued. The party claimed to have been hired by a descendant of Zagyg himself to maintain the grounds around his Castle. The men laughed and declared that they were hired by a senior descendant of Zagyg to collect the ravine toll and offered to let the party pass in exchange for 5 gp each. Krysztof used his ability to detect evil and concentrated on the ruffians. Detecting modest evil, he charged forward and attacked. A bloody melee ensued. The last two men begged for mercy. While some of the party suggested the men could live if they turned over their gold, Krysztof continued his quest to destroy the modestly evil and attacked the men as they attempted to surrender. One man managed to run away to the east, but the party quickly caught him due to his weakened state. Krysztof knocked him unconscious.
The chase ended outside the entrance to a cave on the north face of the Castle bluff. Scar looked inside and saw three dog-men, one of whom ran to a door to the south and presumably went looking for backup. The remaining two dog-men began barking, yip, and howling terribly. The party hauled away their unconscious prisoner and retreated to the secret mine in the abandoned goblin lair to heal up. They took another unconscious prisoner with them.
In the morning one of the prisoners woke up, but the other looked more or less like hamburger. The party questioned the alert captive, but did not learn much. They threatened to turn the prisoner in to the authorities in Yggsburgh which cause him to laugh and suggest the party should be turned in instead. After offering to let the prisoner fight a duel to the death, they ultimately let him go (but not before confiscating his weapons, armor, and money).
The party then headed back to the gnoll cave. They found the three door guards waiting for them and attacked. One managed to escape to the south. While the party explored the entrance to the cave, the door to the south burst open and 8 gnolls charged into the party. Another bloody melee ensued. Scar and Thalion distinguished themselves by repeatedly firing into melee and repeatedly hitting their comrades in the back with errant arrows and bolts. Scar was particularly deadly and did far more damage to the party than the gnolls. Kaldor was a devastating warrior and scored multiple critical hits for massive damage against the luckless gnolls.
With the 8 gnolls vanquished, the party fell to looting the dead while Scar peeked around the southern door. He was not able to see much, but he could hear yipping and barking coming from farther inside the caves. The party beat a hasty retreat with the spoils of war.
The session ended with the party holed up in the secret mine while Scar retrieved his many arrows from his companions backs.
Loot from this session: 135 g.p., 6 sets of scale mail, 1 chain hauberk, 6 heavy flails, 6 belt axes, 6 daggers, 10 shields, 1 longsword, 1 light crossbow, 12 bolts, 10 morning stars, and 20 throwing clubs.
XP for the session: 64 per party member (does not include xp from the equipment which must be sold to convert to XPs). Oni received 32. (Oni has a total of 2,236 x.p.)
Oni had 5/16 hit points at the end of the session.
