Is TLG going to buy West End Games?

Post by Treebore »

Not that I think you should, but they do have some interesting properties.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Why would TLG buy any company? Are they not busy enough with their own product lines? ;)

But, it could be very cool... I'd love to have TORG.

Too bad you can't afford to buy them.

Why should TLG buy? I don't know, expansion? It won't happen in the next couple of years, but maybe they would like to have these options for further down the road.

Just a crazy off the cuff kind of question anyways.

West End Games is up for sale though, for readers who aren't "in the know" about it.

Hmm... I'm only a bit out of the loop then. The latest I heard was a change of focus and direction WEG was going where people could 'buy in' to WEG. I'll check out the latest news later tonight.

Thanks for the update.

Does WEG still own the d6 system? I think it's a very good system, so that's at least one good property.

I still regret selling my Star Wars RPG material before it got d20ified. : ]

Yes... the latest effort was to release a D6 SRD and OGL to go with it. Don't know if this is still in the cards if there is talk of selling.

I like the d6 system ... a lot.

Simply... quick... and fun!

Somebody posed a similar question to Pinnacle Entertainment(Savage Worlds). There's been no official answer, but somebody thought it was interesting because Pinnacle's CEO/Creative Director/and creator of Savage Worlds and Deadlands, Shane Hensley wrote at least one or two TORG products back in the day. I always saw adverts for TORG. It sounded interesting, but I never purchased it.

I thought that there was already a company out there that bought or liscensed the rights to do a new TORG game. My buddy picked up a hardcover at Gencon a coupla years ago or maybe I was bourbon drunk...equal chance of either.

I was really looking forward to an open release of d6; that was discussed over there some time ago but hasn't happened yet.

I know that poor Eric Gibson is trying to keep WEG alive. They suffered a serious setback when they could not afford to publish Bill Coffin's Septimus (which would basically have been their flagship for the D6 line). Its unfortunate since Eric and Bill are great guys and Septimus was an awesome setting concept. Alot of my fellow posters on WEG's boards are giving Eric a really hard time because of the Septimus refund, but I understand what he's going through as he's stated the company isn't liquid at the moment.

If I won the Florida Lotto, one of the first things I'd do is invest in WEG. If only I'd win.....

It's a shame that WEG is having trouble. I really liked the d6 Star Wars and TORG. TORG was such a great gonzo setting. And Star Wars, even though it was a pain to run in continuity, was a cool system that captured the feel of the movies.

As for the TORG hardcover, I'm not certain. I saw the WEG guys at Gencon (maybe in 05 or 06) and they were hocking D6 Space and D6 Fantasy, I believe. My memory is foggy, but I thought they had also re-launched TORG, as well. I may be wrong about that.

If I had the capital, I'd be more than happy to buy WEG. It was once a great company and I'm convinced it can be once again.

Second to C&C (and the games that inspired it), WEG's D6 System (best familiar through their Star Wars license) is my other RPG of choice.

I had always hoped that WEG would get the Star Wars license back. I am sad to hear they are in trouble.

I think that after 4e tanks TLG can pick up WOTC at a firesale price.

I'm interested to hear why you think this would happen. In my own small circle of gamers, I'm the only one who didn't jump all over the new edition.

Never got to play TORG, but I always wanted too. C&C TORG would be cool.

Even if you're lukewarm on 4E(like me), it's not going anywhere. Fact is 5.0 could come out 2 years from now, and sell like crazy. Accept this fact. Of the people in my neck of the woods, I'm among the FEW lukewarm or disinterested players. I picked up a phb(after years of playing the other editions) only because my friend is running a campaign. Otherwise, it's Savage Worlds and C&C for me!

Well, after only one session "lukewarm" would be a bit strong for me. Way to early to say for sure though.

It took all of my will to get though making a 4E character. Im my opinion, it's awful. None of my group wants anything to do with it and my FLGS has sold very few of the core books. But I digress.

Though it would be interesting to see TORG or the D6 system under the TLG banner, and there's nothing wrong with them strengthening their portfolio, but I have to ask - would it?

I was always curious about TORG, and played a bit of Star Wars under WEG, but I have to wonder if buying WEG would benefit TLG? I think if these lines would be profitable, they would have already done so and WEG wouldn't be in the position they're in. Sorry if I'm coming off cold and uncaring, but I like TLG a lot right now, and wouldn't want them to do anything to endanger their company.

But this is all hypothetical anyway, right?

yes, quite....

I bought the PHB at full price from my FLGS then after reading it once, I dumped it on ebay for $20.00 just to get the accursed thing away from me. You could say my reaction to it was visceral. I am not a fan.

If not lukewarm, I guess you could say I care more about Savage Worlds and Castles and Crusades these days to really be concerned about the latest version of D&D. I said lukewarm, out of fairness. Probably not the best choice of words. I haven't played the game, or read the phb enough to know how I feel. I'm definately not on fire for the product, but I'm not terribly knowledgeable with the latest edition. I don't think it's going to wow me. And, if it doesn't, I have my other games. No loss either way.
